The hollow possessed him, remember? The opposite.Kaien-dono, with the tiny bit of control he had over his body, made himself jump at Rukia's sword. I do believe he said that in his final words, then or [spoiler=Read only if you are up to the recent ep of Bleach] when that Arrionerr(wrong spelling) Espada told Rukia of Kaien-dono's memories.
