A short word about legends

I skimmed the last fifty posts and didn't see anyone actually saying that the opening "saying" was false, so I'll go do that.

A legend is only as great as he is' date=' not by what his followers preach.

[/quote']

To be sure, the definition of "great" is subjective and thus varies depending on one's perspective. However, I would argue that, in many cases, the preaching of a legend's followers continues to positively impact the world far more than the legend himself possibly could. This should sound familiar to anyone who has heard a certain expression involving pens and swords. For this reason, a legend may be a fake hero and a lying coward, but if his supposed feats serve as inspiration to others, then that is a more lasting benefit than the legend could ever have achieved with his own sword. That is why even legends who were not themselves real people - hate to break it to you, but King Arthur never lived - have a far greater impact on the world than some sort of local hero who has long since been ignored by history.

Without true talent' date=' a legend is [b']only[/b] a fake merely seeking attention.

The bolded indicates that either:

1) You didn't bother to proofread your "wise saying", which is stupid.

2) You actually think that that sounds right, which is stupid.

In any event, what I said above pretty much applies here. What matters is the legend of the person, not the person behind the legend, as only the latter has lasting impact.

What truly defines if someone is a legend is but merely the fact that he has the will to stand out from everyone else - to make himself known.

You're doing the same thing here' date=' and the words are actually next to each other this time.

In any event, this sentence seems to be a complete about-face from the previous one. Previously, you said that a talentless legend is just an attention-seeker, but now you're saying that a legend is just anyone who can get attention. Does that mean that your definition of how "great" a person is lies in how successfully they can make people look at them?

Just a saying I recently thought of.

It's only a saying if people say it. And it doesn't matter what your followers say, by their own argument. Therefore, this saying is self-admittedly meaningless, quod erat demonstrandum.

Incidentally, this stupid little topic of yours has gotten a lot of posts. Does that make you a great legend for getting people to pay attention to you? And does that not mean that successful internet trolls are great legends under your definition?
