jabber2033
Any rocketeers on this site? I just got back from a ten-day vacation. Went camping near Potter, New York for the 28th annual LDRS meet. LDRS stands for "Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships." People come from all over the country and even other countries to launch model rockets (We even had someone from Brazil!! Talk about wanting to fly a rocket!). These rockets are re-flyable, being recovered with either a parachute or a streamer. Of course, not all of the flights were successful. There were plenty of spectacular failures as well. The first two days were pretty crappy, weather-wise. Rain had fallen almost every day for the past week there, turning the dirt road to the launch site into a road covered in two feet of mud. Those without 4-wheel drive had to park in a gravel lot and use a hay ride to get to their sites. Additionally, the field in which we were launching was divided by a creek, and across that creek, you would sink up to your knees in places. After those two days, it didn't rain much, and by morning of the first day, the road was throwing up dust. The mud field had also dried up nicely. The third day was sunny and it didn't rain, but we had 10-15mph winds with 20-25mph gusts, preventing any high-altitude launches. The last two days were the big ones, and we had plenty of high-powered flights. One of the highlights of LDRS 28 was a drag race between half-a-dozen rockets, all with M-sized motors (Each letter doubles the total thrust from the previous letter. An 18mm B-motor, which can be used in almost all Estes Model Rocket kits, has about a pound of total thrust). I didn't launch many rockets myself (I was not going to go wading through knee-deep mud!!). My dad actually launched more than I did. His highest flight was recorded by an altimeter at 6,810. One of the rockets he scratch-built had a J-350 motor. My highest flight was an estimated 2,000-2,500 feet on an F-39 motor. Click on the link to see some pics. To see more, just change the day of the week in the web address. You can go from Friday to Sunday. http://www.info-central.org/LDRS28/LDRS-Friday/FrameSet.htm As a side note, these pics are not mine.
