Guest Ixigo
I'm really, really sorry... but it looks like I'm about the only one you won't be getting a praise from for this chapter. =( Ok... there's really one word to describe this chapter's ending... ANTI-CLIMAX. It started off good, interesting introduction, nice setting... a nice duel, showing off the headmaster's deck (really clever idea for it, I liked it a lot), and with Clovis jumping in to duel... BUT THEN... WTF, HE WINS IN 1 TURN?? Never, never can you introduce a godly character, have him win a match with ridiculous ease, and then have him lose like that in the SAME chapter. That just kills the character. I know it was for the point of promoting Clovis, but godmodding main characters that way can really kill a fiction... you could have at least had him escape the ZTK tactic and find himself in another tough spot, and leave it at a cliffhanger there... the way you stuffed it all in one chapter, it's just... anti-climax. Unfortunately, flaunting a character with such an uber-deck like that and then having him lose to the main character kind of killed the plot in this one... and it's a shame, because up to the point where Clovis started his first (and last) turn, it was nigh-perfect. So, I'm sorry, but I'll have to reduce the the Dueling and Plot grades for this chapter. The Plot, mostly, since the Dueling was good except the OTK Clovis pulled off in the end. On a much brighter note, I was extremely satisfied with the little Clovis / Naomi character develoment thing in the end. Automatically raises your Character grade, and on a lesser degree, your Plot grade. So: -Plot: 6.5/10 (a big bad anti-climax in the end, mended a bit by the char development)-Characters: 9/10 (like previously, the characters are great, they don't need any improvement, except perhaps a little more emphasis on their appearance, description of their actions etc to separate them from their 'generic' style)-Grammar / Syntax / Structure: 9.5 (the few flaws that I've spotted before have almost vanished, so your rating improves)-Description: 7.5/10 (this one improved as well, but it could still use some work)-Dueling: 7/10 (clever and original, all-in-all, but that OTK kind of messed it up, considering the circumstances)-Overall: 7.9 (overall still good. But, this chapter is a good deal behind the previous ones, with the anti-climactic ending) If you ever consider rewriting this, I strongly suggest leaving this chapter at a cliffhanger in Clovis' second turn and picking up in the next chapter. It would work much better. I'm sorry for the rather negative review, but that's my view. I'm sure the next chapter will be a lot better. Keep it up! But having the main character pull it off against such a strong opponent, after said opponent has just uber-owned another character, is just... wrong. And no problem, as long as you keep writing, I'll keep reviewing. =/
Umbra
I like it, ofc, but as stated before, an OTK against a character that so far has won all his duels in the fanfic in less than a turn? Still, good. I won't be able to rate you as detailed as Ixigo, but I'll give you a 9/10. //Umbra

Kocrow17
Chapter 6! Clovis, Naomi, and Icarus walked up the wooden ramp up to the ship. The large vessel was taking them away from Duel Academy and to Domino City, which was housing the Advanced Kaiser Open. Once the ship had taken off, our heros stood around the deck, leaning over the ship’s railing. “Ok, what is Big Shield Gardna’s defense stat?” asked Naomi. She held the said card in front of Clovis, her thumb blocking its attack and defense. “Seventeen-Hundred!”answered Clovis. “Wrong,” she said, moving her thumb. “Twenty-six hundred. You’re thinking of Mid-Shield Guardna.” Clovis let his arms dangle over the railing. He was sort of getting discouraged after losing fifty-some cards in a row. “Don’t be a sore loser,” said Naomi. “Come one, now you have to ask Icarus a question.” “Why? He’ll just get it right, again. You two know too many cards. All I need to know is about my own cards.” “Knowing your own cards is good, but you should be prepared for all sorts of cards your opponent may have.” Icarus explained. Clovis was not really listening. He was more interested in the waves crashing against the ship’s hull. The sound was sort of mesmerizing. “What are you three doing standing over here?” Clovis and the others turned around. It was Damien. “Nathaniel is dueling some Ra Yellow student on the other end of the ship.” Damien started running and the three of them starting walking in the same direction. “Who’s Nathaniel?” Clovis asked Naomi and Icarus. Naomi let out a laugh in response. “What’s so funny?” “Nathaniel is the single greatest duelist at Duel Academy,” explained Icarus. “I thought you at least knew that.” “Well in that case, I’m going ahead to check out as much of his deck as possible. Like you said, I should be prepared for what my opponent is going to throw at me.” Clovis broke out into a sprint. After all, how could he become the best, without beating the best? Checkmate! Duel Academy’s #1 Duelist! The usual mesh of blue, red, and yellow students formed a gathering around the duel. They took the shape of a halo around the two opponents and Clovis was forced to push his way to the front. “It’s about time you got here,” said a voice beside him. It was Damien again. He was sitting cross legged at the front of the crowd. Clovis did the same, though they were the only ones in the group not standing. Clovis looked at the duelists. The first one on his right was a student wearing a Ra Yellow uniform. He was shorter and had orange hair. His opponent, who Clovis assumed to be Nathaniel, was wearing an Obelisk Blue uniform. He also wore a pair of square glasses that made him look much older. But the strangest thing was, the two of them were dueling on a chess board. “Have you completed you turn yet, Kevin? I’m getting bored just standing here,” said Nathaniel. He had two monsters on his side of the field. Once looked like a king, and the other a queen. Like two characters taken straight out of medieval times. Except, the two of them had skin made of stone. Though it was feint, Clovis could notice hairline cracks in their skin. Nathaniel also had a face down spell or trap. “There’s no need to be inpatient. You’ll be on your knees begging for mercy soon.” Unlike Nathaniel’s calm and mature voice, Kevin had a more of a nasally whiney voice. Kevin’s field had a large insect monster on the field. A humanoid prey mantis wielding a large scythe. Behind the monster were two face up cards, a spell and a trap. “I bet you’re kicking yourself for giving me your monsters, now they’ve become food for my Dreadscythe Harvester (2300 –> 3800)!” “What’s he talking about?” Clovis asked Damien. “Nathaniel’s strategy is all about giving his opponent his monsters. I know it sounds weird, but it works. The trap card Kevin has is DNA Surgery (Continuos Trap). It makes all the monsters on the field into insects. That card is imperative for his strategy because Dreadscythe Harvester feeds off other insects to raise its attack power.” “So when Nathaniel handed over all his monsters, he just ended up giving Kevin food for his monster?” “Exactly. It looks like Nathaniel will have to give up his championship title.” “Dreadscyhe, attack!” At Kevin’s command, the large mantis scuttled forward and slammed its scythe into Nathaniel’s stone king. The attacked monster was reduced to rubble and its owner took a hefty amount of damage. NATHANIEL: 300KEVIN: 1100 “It’s your turn,” said Kevin. (D. Harvester: 3800 –> 2300) “Why would he destroy the king instead of the queen?” asked Clovis. “Sure he did more damage, but now the queen (5/2400/1900) can destroy Kevin’s monster.” “It’s not that easy. The other card Kevin has face up is Insect Barrier (Continuous Spell). It stops your opponent from attacking with insects. Don’t forget that DNA Surgery has made all monsters on the field insects. “That’s a pretty good strategy.” “He apparently modeled it after the strategy of some pro duelist.” Nathaniel drew his card. “I’m switching my Chess Queen to defense mode. When this happens, she moves over to your side of the field.” The queen shifted into a defensive position and floated over to Kevin’s side of the field. “Haven’t learnt your lesson yet?” asked Kevin with a smirk. Nathaniel returned with a similar smile. “Oh, but I have. Knowing how to learn from your opponent means victory. I activate Curse of Lineage (Normal Trap). With this, I can select any monster you control. I think I’ll choose my Chess Queen. Now, I only need three or more monsters in my graveyard with the same type as her, and she’ll be turned into an explosive. I have to thank your Dreadscythe for sending those monsters to the graveyard. They were all rock type monsters, like my Chess Queen.” “What? No!” But Chess Queen still combusted into an explosion of fire and stone fragments. NATHANIEL: 300KEVIN: 0 “Nooooo!” Kevin collapsed to his knees. It looked like he was about to tear out the hair on each side of his head. “I was sooo close!” Nathaniel turned and walked away from the field. The students in his way quickly side stepped for him to pass. Clovis, however, wasn’t going to just let him go. He ran after him. “Hey, Nathaniel! Great duel. That was a close one, huh?”Clovis said. Nathaniel stopped, and turned to look at him, but gave no response. “I mean, it was pretty bad luck to battle someone who’s strategy seemed to completely counter yours.” “Don’t be stupid,” said Nathaniel. “It wasn’t luck. I chose to duel him because he had an advantage over my deck. There’s no point dueling against people I could easily win against.” “Well if that’s how you feel, how about me and you have a duel?” Clovis held up his left arm which was fastened with a duel disk. “No, a waste of time.” Nathaniel turned his head back to face forward and continued to walk away. “Don’t think you can walk away from me!” Clovis was about to chase after him, when two separate sets of arms held him back. After a moment of struggling, he realized it was Naomi and Icarus. “Don’t be so reckless,” said Icarus. “Don’t expect Nathaniel to duel every person that asks him.” “Why not?” asked Clovis. “Because he’s the single greatest duelist at Duel Academy,” informed Naomi. “Didn’t you notice the silver emblem he was wearing?” Clovis thought for a moment. “You mean the badge? What about it?” The two of them let go of Clovis and he turned around to face them. “It’s given to each duelist who achieves the highest rank at Duel Academy.” As Icarus spoke, he opened his jacket and revealed an identical silver emblem. “Besides,” said Naomi. “Don’t duel yourself out before we get to the Advanced Kaiser Open.” “The kaiser what?” Naomi let out a sigh of frustration. “It’s the tournament we’re heading to. During the first round of the tournament, you have to complete five duels. To advance to the final round, you have to win at least three of these duels.” “Five duels? That’s it? Ha, no problem!” “But the tournament officially started three days ago,” added Icarus. “Instead of a week, we only have four days. Not to mention that some pro duelists will be taking part in this as well.” “Five duels in four days? No problem! Pro duelists? The stronger the opponent, the better!” Clovis let out a confident laugh. Naomi and Icarus seemed to give up on trying to convince him. “Here, read this,” said Naomi, handing Clovis the booklet. “It’s all about the Advanced Kaiser Open and its rules.” * * * * * All of the academy students began descending a wooden ramp down from the ship to the stone dock it was docked at. The dock was filled with people, waiting for the students. Clovis first thought they may have been pro duelists, ready to take some easy wins. But upon further inspection, he could see they weren’t duelists, but the waiting families of many of the students. Seeing them made Clovis smile. Clovis wasn’t sure where Naomi was, but he could here a few students behind him talking to Icarus. They were apparently striking up a deal with Icarus, knowing dueling him would be a sure win. But Icarus still declined, insisting he would not be competing in th tournament. “It would give too many duelists free passes to the next round,” was his justification. Clovis was sort of disappointed Icarus would not be competing because he intended to keep his promise to his new friend. Eventually Clovis snapped out of his trance. He was nearing the base of the ramp and he would officially part of the tournament once he set foot on ground. He could see the back of Nathaniel’s head just ahead of him. A few more steps and... “Nathaniel! I challenge you to a duel!” Clovis had just taken his first step, and already made his first challenge. Students stopped descending the platform behind him, waiting for a response. “I have no reason to duel you,” said Nathaniel. He didn’t even bother to turn around. “Now you do! We’re both part of the same tournament! You have to have five duels in four days, and good luck trying to find an opponent who will willingly fight you.” Silence. Everyone waited for Nathaniel’s reaction. Finally, Nathaniel turned around to face Clovis. “Do you realize what you’re doing?” “Yeah, challenging the best there is! If I’m going to be the best, then I’ll need to beat you!” “Very, well. Let’s duel.” * * * * * Clovis and Nathaniel stood ready at the harbor. Clovis had moved away from the ramp, allowing all the students to come ashore. The usual crowd had formed around him. Some duelists had taken off, hoping to find some new opponents. Some families stayed, wanting to see what this “Duel Academy” had been teaching its students. The parents wanting to see what skills the school was offering to the kids, and the younger brothers and sisters who may one day follow in their older sibling’s footsteps. “You can have the first move,” offered Clovis. “You’ll need it.” Nathaniel drew his card. “I activate my Chess Game (Field Spell) card.” A black and white 8x8 chess board appeared beneath their feet. “What’s this thing do?” “You’ll find out. For now, I’ll just set a monster face down and pass the game over to you.” A face down card appeared on the field. “My turn,” called Clovis, drawing his card. “I’m summoning Kintaro (3/1000/300) to the field!” A small chibi samurai jumped to the field. It had big round eyes and wore blue robes. It gripped a sheathed katana in its small hand. “Kintaro is attacking your face down card! When he attacks a face down card, its instantly destroyed, without me having to worry if it has more defense points than my monster.” Kintaro slashed the face down card in two. The two pieces disappeared in a flash of vanishing pixels. “My card being destroyed was a good thing, no matter the method you used. The card you destroyed was my Chess Bishop (4/1400/1100). When he’s destroyed, he regenerates on your side of the field as a continuous spell card.” The bishop rose from the ground in front of Clovis. It kneeled as if in prayer. “One small rule, you can’t tribute summon while you control my Chess Bishop.” “I didn’t plan on tribute summoning anyway. I’m just setting a card face down and ending this turn.” A face down card appeared beside the stone bishop. “My first move is this, my Chess Knight (4/1500/1600). I’m also activating my Miracle Quarry (Continuous Spell). Here’s how Miracle Quarry works. I choose a rock monster I control, and my team of excavators will look for one just like it. So, I’m ordering my team to search for a copy of my Chess Knight.” The spell card flashed gold for a second, acknowledging his selection. “Until then, Chess Knight will attack your Kintaro.” The small samurai was no match for the rock knight. CLOVIS: 3500NATHANIEL: 4000 “Kintaro isn’t gone for good! I’m activating Call of the Haunted (Continuous Trap) to resurrect him back from the grave!” The small samurai returned to Clovis’s field, but he was not alone. Nathaniel’s knight was also standing on Clovis’s field. “Oh, right. Chess Knight switches over to you if it destroyed one of your monsters.” “How do you expect to win if you keep giving me your monsters?” “What if I told you that I don’t expect to win at all.” “Then, I’d say you sound like Derek the first time I dueled him. Didn’t you already say you could beat me?” Nathaniel shook his head. “I said this duel would be a waste of time. That’s because you can easily defeat me. You hold with you a gift that all great duelists in the past have had. You can draw the card you need when you need it. You can see strategies that no one else can. You can even control the actions of your opponent.” “What are you talking about?” “Your duel against Bahrei, you drew every card you needed to win. He even played in the specific order he needed to play in order for you to win. That was far from a coincidence. You have a gift, a gift all of the world’s greatest duelists have had. That’s why, you will win this duel.” Clovis didn’t know what to say. He was going to win? Was this a trick? Icarus had said the same thing, and it was true... “Let’s continue,” said Nathaniel. “First, I’m setting a card face down. Now, my turn is coming to and end, so my excavation team has special discovery for me.” Nathaniel’s Miracle Quarry began to glow once again. This time, it dropped a completely gray statue shaped like Chess Knight to the field. “This is my rock token (4/1500/1600). It comes to the field in defense position and stays like that while on the field.” Clovis was about to draw his card when Nathaniel interrupted him, “Wait!” he called. “Focus, and the card you need will appear.” Clovis was unsure how he was supposed to concentrate on his card, so he just drew. A shocked look appeared on his face. It was the card he needed to get through that stone monster’s defense. “I activate Double Summon (Normal Spell)! Now I can summon any two monsters from my hand, instead of just one. So I’m bringing out my Thunder Breaker (4/1200/1000) and my Righteous Rabbit (4/1700/300)!” The muscular adult male with thunder crackling in his fists and the warrior-rabbit carrying a large sword appeared on Clovis’s field. “First up, my Righteous Rabbit is attacking that stone token!” The carbon copy of the knight was destroyed. “Now Thunder Breaker attacks you directly!” “Activate trap, En Passant (Continuous Trap)! I had to save this for your second monster. I’m aware of your rabbit’s effect, and I don’t plan on suffering a defeat to your Turn Summon cards.” A small pawn appeared on the field and was launched forward as if fired from a cannon. It collided with Thunder Breaker, shattering him into pixels. “Oh, and my pawn is sticking around on your side of the field as a monster card (1/100/100).” “Don’t think I’m done! Kintaro, attack Nathaniel directly!” NATHANIEL: 3000 “Now I’m turning your own Chess Knight against you! Chess Knight attack Nathaniel directly!” “Sorry, you may control my chess cards, but you don’t own them. They only take orders from me.” “Then I guess I’m ending my turn after changing Chess Knight to defense mode.”The Knight on Clovis’s field put up its guard and Nathaniel drew his card. “I’m activating Heavy Piece (Normal Spell). You remember my Chess Queen from my last duel? Well I’m discarding her from my hand to draw 2 cards from my deck...” Nathaniel slid the high level monster into his graveyard and drew two cards. “Then I’m removing the Heavy Piece spell card from my graveyard from the game. This lets me special summon Spell Striker (3/600/200) from my hand.” In a flash of light, a small warrior appeared on the field. It wore light blue armor and had a small horned helmet. “My Spell Striker is being sent straight to the Graveyard. I’m offering it as a tribute to summon my Chess Rook (5/300/2100).” A large stone pillar appeared on the field. Its shadow consumed Clovis’s field. “Let me guess, you’re handing your rook over to me?” asked Clovis. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. First my Miracle Quarry activates. Lets hope it digs up something good. Next, I’m discarding a card from my hand to activate my rook’s effect. Like in the true game of chess, my rook can move forward and side to side. But the problem is, your Righteous Rabbit is in the way.” The stone pillar lurched forward in a sudden burst of momentum and demolished Clovis’s rabbit. The rook stayed on the destroyed monster’s square. “Now my turn comes to an end. Which means Miracle Quarry give me another stone token. A statue identical Chess Rook appeared on the field in defense position. (5/300/2100) “Draw!” announced Clovis, drawing his card. He knew what card he needed, he just needed to draw it...“You’re gonna regret forgetting about Kintaro. Since its been two turns since he was first summoned, I can Turn Summon him! Go, Kintaro! Become Sinkata no Kintoki (6/2000/500)!” The tiny samurai grew into a full grown adult. His chibi-like eyes became mature and gained wisdom only granted by a thousand battles. The newly formed samurai stood taller than Clovis and was ready, hand on the hilt of his sword, for battle. “Your monster seems to be lacking the attack strength needed to get through my stone token’s defense.” “Not for long! I’m equipping Sinkata with the card I just drew. It’s called Prism Blade (Equip Spell).” The katana in Sinkata’s hand disappeared and a diamond blade appeared in its place. The crystal began to glow and shifted to a dark colour in his possession. “Your chess cards may be light monsters, but your stone token is an earth monster like Sinkata. So when a monster with the Prism Blade battles with another monster with the same attribute, its attack power doubles (2000 –> 4000)!” Sinkata raised the diamond sword above his head and swung it downward onto stone token. The token cracked and shattered at the mighty force of the sword. I can win this, though Clovis. I can get any card I want! “Nice move, but now it’s my turn again.” Nathaniel drew his card and looked pleased with what he drew. “I summon Chess King (1/100/100). He is the last of my chess monsters you will be seeing. When he’s summoned to the field, I can take any chess monster in my graveyard, and play it on your side of the field in your spell and trap card zone, just like how Chess Bishop is now. You remember the Chess Queen I discarded, right?” The queen with skin of marble rose from the ground and stood beside the Chess Bishop on Clovis’s field. “Oh, and by the way...” Nathaniel held up his duel disk for Clovis to see his Life-Point display. His life points were gone and in their place was the word “WIN” stretched across the screen. “That’s checkmate.” “What?” Clovis looked down at his own duel disk to fine his life points had vanished too, and there was the word “LOSE”. “Don’t you get it? This entire time we’ve been playing a game of chess. You’d think the field spell I played would have been a good enough hint. I’ve been moving my monsters in position to surround you this entire duel. When I have you cornered with five of my cards, I win the duel.” Clovis took a good look around himself and saw what Nathaniel meant. All of Nathaniel’s cards; a pawn, the knight, the bishop, the rook, and the queen surrounded him. They each turned on him, cutting him off from the rest of his field. “This doesn’t make any sense! You said I could beat anyone! I had some sort of gift!” “Knowing I couldn’t defeat your cards, I chose to focus on you instead. Once I told you that you had such a gift, you chose to completely rely on it rather than build a strong strategy with the cards you are given. Your overconfidents resulted in your downfall.” Nathaniel deactivated his duel disk. All of the holograms disappeared. He started to walk away, but not before stopping for just a moment and say, “knowing how to learn from your opponent means victory.” Those last words were like a bolt of lighting traveling through Clovis’s mind. Nathaniel had said the exact same thing to Kevin. Clovis wandered if he himself was just that simple minded. Elsewhere in the crowd, Naomi had a saddened look on her face. “It had to happen sooner or later,” Icarus said to her. “Yeah, but why now? Why during the tournament?” she asked Icarus. But he had no response. Both of them were looking straight ahead at Clovis, who was just standing there. “Nathaniel should have just declined.” “You heard what Clovis said. When it comes down to it, he wants to be the best. How does he expect to get there without suffering a few losses along the way. Besides, he’s not out of the tournament just yet. He has to lose three times to be kicked out.” “Yeah, but... I hope he’s ok.” “Come on, let’s go talk to him.” NEXT TIME: RESTORING FAITH IN THE CARDS! DANCE DUELING REVOLUTION! Draco Straybyrn
Nice job! The best fanfic I've read for quite a long while. You'd be surprised at the quality of some, and not in a good way.
