The Catcher in the Rye

This thread is about a good book.

But not just about the book. It's actually about the main character Holden Caulfield. What are your thoughts on him? Do you think that you can relate to him in any ways?

I recently re-read the book, and picked up some little details that helped me to define the character himself much better.

Also just post your general thoughts on the book. (I think this sentence might be somewhat redundant. SO IF YOU FEEL THE NEED, DISREGARD IT'S EXISTENCE IN THIS POST.)

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend reading it. You won't regret it, unless you like all that twilight/harry potter sheet. Then, by all means, don't read it.

I heard it was good. Almost read it for Novels class, but the page count was too low for me. Maybe I'll get around to it one day...

lol, this is the most relevant posts to a book discussion that didn't involve angsting wizards and gay(?) sparkle vampires I've ever seen.

My impression was that it was supposed to be about Holden's coming-of-age or something similar, but when I read it, my impression was that Holden was back where he'd started, and that his usual cycle - of which this was stated to be something like the fifth iteration - would continue to be repeated. Yes, he said everything was going to work out next time, but he probably thought that each of the other times as well, and it's made clear from the start that Holden is an unreliable narrator, especially when it comes to anything related to his own status.

Too bad it won't have much discussion in a "Kids Forum" if it isn't about vampires or happy go-go wizards.

Sadly this is true.

These days' date=' [s']good[/s] popular literature is poorly written, fantasy romance novels. T_T

I hate my life. / wrist

Good authors still exist. They just don't get love from tweens.

IF POPULAR ISN'T GOOD, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN GUCCI MANE?

I actually kind of got the same thing out of it while reading. But mostly, these things all contributed heavily to my liking of the book.

Really, if it isn't "philosophical" or "fantasy" in any way, gtfo.

This sucks.

Well, I can't really say I can relate to the character, I mean really..."phony"

Glimpse of the plot.

I don't read books anymore but I might try searching for it if I'm interested.

It's about a 16 year old boy who gets expelled from a military school and goes to New York to stay for the few days before he goes home. It sounds bland' date=' but it's really a good book.[hr']

i've heard of it i might read it what is he page count

A little over 200

Awful book is awful.

I'd sooner read the bible for a sense of realism than this book.

It isn't about the real world' date=' no. It's about the world viewed through Holden's lens.

Most people who "like" this book think that Holden was a realist and perceive him as a true seer or a genius.

I'm just showing my condolences for such ignorance. Holden was a blind fool at best.

Yes, yes, Holden's perception of the world was way funked-up - and in a way presaged and described the general waywardness of his generation - but that doesn't distract me from Salinger's great depiction.
