Un/Original Card Art [Discussion]

I'm assuming this goes here. It doesn't feature any cards as such, but it does revolve around realistic card making, so seems the best forum for it.

 

Now, I've been cruising through here recently, and I've noticed something that seems rather pointless: criticizing people, especially newer members, for having "overused" art. Why is this?

 

Very few of us can make artwork of the kind of quality that would be easily acceptable on the face of a YuGiOh card. I have Photoshop myself, but I can't do stuff of that calibre. Therefore, the vast, vast majority of us have to go out and art search.

 

However, there are a huge amount of YCMers, making maybe 5,000 cards a day of varying qualities. We must burn through vast amounts of art and artists very, very quickly, and after a while it becomes really difficult to find new art this is of a sufficient style and quality.

 

Even some of the older members have troubles finding the right art for a card they want to make, so why are we punishing the newer members for using art that has been seen before? They haven't been here much, they don't know if the art has been used before. Everything else about a card, you can find out easily before hand - OCG you can check the wikia, balance you can spend after looking over the TCG section and seeing what makes a card balanced or not, originality is purely down to the maker. But what are you supposed to do for art? Trawl through the entirety of realistic cards to see if the picture has been used before? Yeah, because that is realistic.

 

Similarly, why is an piece of artwork having been used before a bad thing? I'd prefer to see good artwork I've seen before to bad artwork I haven't. If a piece of artwork is good, then it deserves to be used lots, put into multiple cards, so we can see many different interpretations of it.

 

So yeah. Discuss about un/original card art and what you think about it.

I understand what you're saying, I also like to see a good picture, but if the same pic is used for like 100 times it gets boring to see it.

And it's not that whe want to humiliate the newbies but whe want to tell them that the pic is used allot of times and that if he/she wants to use a pic that he/she has to do some trouble in searching (I'm sometimes looking for a week or more when searching for pic's) and don't use the first pic they see.

Finding the right image is difficult. If I see a picture from which I think: "This one is perfect for my new card", I'll use it.

If the PIC has been used before by other members...so be it! I chose this pic for my card, and I made a description that suits it well.

 

It is very hard to find 'original' artwork. I actually like to see the same pics again, so that I can see what other people made of it. Perhaps it's different from what I made.

 

Machine-pics are hard to find, and sometimes I run into a nice pic. I use it, because I like it. If people say: "It's overused", Who cares! I cannot predict that the pic I've chosen has already been used by others.

If I like a pic, I use it. If it is overused, so be it.

But you are right, finding proper artwork is hard. And when a New Member has finally found a nice pic, we should not start criticising that it is 'overused'.

I normally say: "Hey, I used that pic too! :D".

I know what u meen , I use OU pics sometimes and the pic isnt all that important , the effect, OCG,balance etc....is important

I have long since stopped critizising for Overused Art. Now, I grade crads by how well the picture fits the card.

 

I understand how they feel. Ever since the crybabies at DA complained about their art being used, we've been limited at what we can use for our cards. And those limits have long since been reached.

 

Thank god we've gotten people like Father Wolf and Wanderley who make art especially for us to use for free. Unfortunately, that art, more than any others, have been overused.

 

All I can say is that we need to over look overused art because there isn't much else we can do.
