Ride of the Valkyries [Advanced RP, PG-16] - Started, Still Accepting

Vector Nightmare

Recommended Posts

First things first. This RP will strictly follow the Advanced Clause guidelines. In case you don't know what these are:
Minimum post quality

A good, lengthy post in a role-play should consist of at least four sentences with proper English grammar and spelling. However, as a general rule, one to two paragraphs should be included in every post, by the least.

A good post should be able to elaborate from, to take material from and use it on your own post. Don't make a post that doesn't move forward the story at some point. (Warning! Be careful when doing this - elaborating too much may be on the brink of Godmoding)

Proper dialogue

Dialogue / dialog in an RP should be presented either by quotation marks or by speech lines. Script format and/or other means is strictly prohibited.

Using script format, por ejemplo, gives lesser room for character evolution and makes overall conversation dull.

Copy-paste characters

Characters used in different roleplays, with only minor details altered to fit the plot, is strictly prohibited. They completely halt character evolution by not evolving as characters - not in a true way. Sure, this particular incarnation might change, but the overall idea will always be the same.

Therefore, unless you are willing to devote time and effort to participate in a high-quality Roleplay, please do not bother applying.

Now, onto the RP.
As the name might suggest to most of you, it is based on Norse mythology - more specifically, the eschatology described as Ragnarok, the Twilight of Gods. However, in contrast to the actual material which simply focuses on the battles between the Gods, this RP will shift the lens to the 'backstage' of Ragnarok. In this case, you, the RPers, will take the roles of the champions of Valhalla, chosen to fight by Odin's side duuring the last battle. You will represent the immortal reincarnation of a slain warrior that has exhibited great bravery and astounding power on the battlefield, and chosen by the Battle Maidens as one of the heralds of Asgard's army to Ragnarok - simply put, an Einherjar.
War brews across the nine worlds. Muspellheim is getting hotter, and Niflheim is getting colder. The wicked giants from Jotunheim besiege the divine walls of Asgard daily, and even the sanctrums of Valhalla are in uproar. Svartalfaheim and Alfheim wage war against each other. The demons of Hel plague Midgard, which is beset by the frightening Fimbulvetr. As the shadow of Loki slowly banishes Yggrassil's light, the forces of Asgard prepare for war...
This RP starts at roughly the same time that Fimbulvetr, the Great Winter, begins in Midgard (the human realm). The Gods in Asgard begin preparations for Ragnarok. But the enemies are many, and unless they are contained before the last battle starts, total annihilation awaits the world. Therefore, you, the gloried Einherjar, are called upon to put your powers to the test, and prove that you are worthy to stand by Odin's side as the Twilight of Gods begins.
Fimbulvetr has begun, and in the three years before the prophecy finally comes to fulfillment and the end of days arrives, you have to purge the evils that could turn the scales of the divine conflict before it even begins. The Dark Elves, the Black Dwarves, the Wights and Wraiths, the mighty Jormungar, Hel's spawns, the Trolls and even humans, those that have fallen under Loki's sway, are now your enemies. Under the guidance of the Valkyries, you must pave the path to Ragnarok with the corpses of your enemies - and stop them from doing the same with yours.
This RP will be rather limited in scope at first. The initial task force ordained by Odin consists of six Einherjar. Each RPer will create one Einherjar character to Roleplay, which limits the initial number of participants to six.

There are also two further positions that might or might not be filled, depending on attendance. The six Einherjar are led by three Valkyries. The Valkyries will not directly participate in battle - not yet, anyway. Instead, they will be serving as guides, advisors and commanders of the Einherjar. In short, applying for a Valkyrie position is approximately the same as applying for a Game Master position. You will have control over the development of the RP itself.

Naturally, the requirements for earning such a spot are much higher, and you must prove not only your RPing skill, but your ability to coordinate and interact with the members. Upon acceptance, you will be further briefed about the outline of the RP, and we will often discuss its progress and decide upon future developments.

So, there are only eight spots for now - six Einherjar, and two Valkyries (I will be controlling the third). Follow the character sheets below to apply for one of them. In the future, as the RP progresses, depending on its success more spots will open up, and a wider variety of characters will become available, including and not limited to humans, evil creatures that oppose the Einherjar, and more Valkyries.
Please fill one of the below sheets with the desired information [you cannot apply for both an Einherjar (regular member) and a Valkyrie (game master) position]. Note that the requirements for becoming a Valkyrie are much steeper than those for becoming an Einherjar. Also note that you may only apply once for the position of a Valkyrie. If you fail, you are welcome to try again as an Einherjar. The maximum number of attempts you have at applying as an Einherjar is three. If by the third time you cannot meet the minimum requirements for receiving a spot, then any further applications will be rejected until further notice.

Guide:

-Name: Quite obvious, really. Since Einherjar come from all times and ages, there are no limitations - just make sure it fits your character's backstory.

-Gender: Generally, there are male Einherjar and female Valkyries. Therefore, you should fill this in with 'male', and design an appropriate character.

-Appearance: Do not write anything here. Just fill in the sections below. All are pretty self-explanatory. For Physique, choose one of the following (from most bulky to least bulky): Muscular, Athletic, Regular, Slim, Petite. Choose whatever you wish, but I will ask you to elaborate on how your legendary swordsman brandishing the giant zweihander while drinks ale all day long at Valhalla can have a 'petite' figure.

-Backstory: Just a few lines about your character before he died. I don't want anything much. To me, the only backstory that is of importance is that which is revealed through the RP. But just write some brief notes. No need to include information on how he died. Why? You'll see.

-Personality: I'll be honest. I don't expect much from this, either. A character's personality comes to life through RPing, not through description. But again, I'd like at least a sentence or two, briefly describing how your character generally behaves.

-Fighting Style: You will select one of the options under it. Either Weaponry (direct combat) or Runes (magic). For Weaponry, choose one of the following: Sword, Axe, Hammer, Bow, Lance. For Runes, choose one of the following: Elemental, Demonic, Divine. The weapons are pretty self-explanatory. The three types of Runes generally dictate what kind of spells you are using. Elemental is mostly spells that involve the natural elements (ie fire, air, earth etc). Divine spells are blessings from the Gods that are mostly used as protection or aid rather than direct offense. Demon spells come from the dark realms, are centered around fire or ice, and contain curses, afflictions, summonings and other nasty stuff. Keep in mind that what you select here will only mark your initial aptitude - you will be able to grow stronger and more skilled, as well as expand your aptitudes, as you gain more experience.

-RP Sample: There we go. Here, I want you to write a short RP, describing your death and your selection as an Einherjar. The process varies according to the legend, but generally involves the vision of a Valkyrie descending from the Heavens to take you to Valhalla. It is up to you to decide how to describe the scene. A minimum of 250 words is required. And I'm letting you off easy.

Guide:

-Name: This time I can't be so lenient as before. You will have to pick an existing Valkyrie name. This page should cover you.

-Gender: Just like you had to pick male for the Einherjar, you'll have to choose female for the Valkyries.

-Appearance: Same as above.

-Personality: Same as above.

-RP Sample: Not the same as above, I'm afraid. For this one, I'll require at least twice as long a sample as before, around 500 words. The quality will also have to be considerably higher. You are required to RP your Valkyrie supervising a group (as many as you want) of Einherjar training in battle. Again, how you develop the scene is up to you, so don't dwell too much on the details. It's the quality and your ability to RP a situation with multiple characters that will be taken into account here.

Applications will be handled and discussed via PM only. Applications in this thread will be completely disregarded. Applications that will not follow the above guidelines will also be completely disregarded.
The most important one:

God Moding is' date=' for short, when a player does something she isn't allowed to do. This might include:

-Controlling other player's characters, given that they don't have a permission.

-Controlling NPC's, characters normally controlled by the host.

-Controlling battle, rendering yourself invulnerable and one-shotting all your opponents.

-Have amazing luck.

-Creating NPCs to improve your own character's strength.[/quote']

In this RP, Godmodding will not be tolerated, at all. More specifically:

-You can and will not, ever, control another player's character, unless you have specific express permission for a valid, stated reason. NOTE: RPing INSTEAD of another member if that member is absent etc will be allowed with prior notice and consent from the absent member.

-You will not control NPCs. You will not create NPCs. Exception: If you've been chosen for a Valkyrie position, or if you've been given explicit permission by me or another person designated to help with the RP to create / RP an NPC for specific reasons.

-Battles will be supervised. If we - the ones handling the RP - judge that one party is being unfair / godmodding, we will intervene. If that member keeps acting invincible, he will be warned. Once more, and he'll be kicked from the RP. Anyway, that is not much of an issue right now, as all PCs (player characters) are allied, and the enemies will be NPCs that will be controlled by us anyway. Just keep this in mind.

Posts that disregard the above regulations will be disregarded. If the infracting member persists, he will be warned. Subsequent infractions will result in a kick and ban from the RP.

Also, from the time the RP officially begins, no fully OoC (out-of-character) posts will be allowed. Until then, you are free to ask questions etc in this thread (remember: no applications) in OoC (well, you can't RP in-character yet anyway).

There are no other specific rules. Everything that applies in the forums and in this section applies here as well. If you have any questions, ask ahead.

1) Ixigo [sieglinde]

Name: Varden

Appearance:

-Physique: Athletic

-Hair Color: Dark brown

-Hair Style: Straight-haired, with long, artful bangs

-Eye Color: Green

-Height: 5''10

Backstory: A talented Magician from the England's Silver Age, he was discovered and quickly apprenticed by the powerful sorceress Vivienne - also known as Nimue - as a child after her betrayal of Merlin. Under Vivienne's capable hands, he was able to quickly develop into a formidable Magician, wielding particular strength with the elements of Earth and Air especially. As the apprentice of the sorceress who betrayed England's most powerful sorcerer, Varden was in turn exposed to much of England's politics and outright dislike for his master, which in turn created an aptitude in him for political dealings. After he passed the Twelve Trials successfully at the age of seventeen, he distanced himself from Vivienne for reasons unknown and began to travel the land, wandering from place to place.

Personality: Usually cool-headed and confident, although he conceals a fiery temper that often flares up when he is upset or in battle. He tends to be slightly mysterious and conceal things, if unintentionally. His studies as a magician under Vivienne have lent him an air of command that is rare in one so young, as well as considerable repute and fame. Despite this, he dislikes mention of his ex-master, and refuses to elaborate on what separated them so many years ago.
Name: Isgaen

Appearance:

-Physique: Slim

-Hair Color: Blonde

-Hair Style: Shoulder length, ponytailed

-Eye Color: Grey

-Height: 5' 6"

Backstory: Part of the illustrious warrior family of Tempestrage, Igsaen was born an unaturally small child. As he grew up, he was sickly and often confined to his bed for weeks at a time. Balots Tempestrage, the patriarch, declared Igsaen to be a family disgrace and stripped Igsaen of his name and hid his existence from the world. After his 8th birthday, Igsaen overcame his constant sickness. In order to keep him from the world, the Tempestrage family bought a large enclosed estate in which Igsaen could frolick away from the prying eyes of the world. As he aged, his frolicking evolved into combat training. Despite being completely isolated from almost all human contact and the family training regimen, Igsaen forged himself into a worthy warrior. Forgoing his family traditional fighting style of axe and tower shield, Igsaen trained himself to fight with a lance-like stick. When he was 18, the Tempestrage villa was raided and burnt to the ground, killing everyone in it, except Igsaen, who was outside. As the bandits wandered into the forest, Igsaen dispatched each one of them until all of them were disposed of. With no reason to stay, Igsaen left the Tempestrage estate with the loot the bandits took. Aside from priceless family jewels and gold, in the pile of loot was the family armour, which he wore instead of the very sparse clothing provided to him by his family. As he ventured to the nearest town, he saw what sad shape the world was in. Full of war and chaos, Igsaen felt a drive to bring order to the chaos. Having a blacksmith make him a fine lance, he ventured the countryside, fighting off bandits and rogues from small villages.

Personality: Rather eccentric due to being almost completely isolated from the world all his life. He seems to believe that inanimate objects speak to him when prompted. He is compassionate and kind despite the cruel treatment given to him by his family. He also suffers from hero complex, having to save every living being from danger despite the harm that could come to himself.

Character Rank: C

Equipment:

-Weapon (Main Hand): Asgardian Silver Lance - Rank: C, A simple, but sturdy spear with a pointed edge. Two-handed.

-Weapon (Off-Hand): N/A

-Armor (Breastplate): Asgardian Silver Cuirass - Rank: C, Plain armor made from blessed silver that can endure even the most vicious of attacks.

-Armor (Handguards): Asgardian Silver Gauntlets - Rank: C, Plain gauntlets that protect the lower arms without weighing them down severely.

-Armor (Leggings): Asgardian Silver Greaves - Rank: C, Plain legguards designed to defend the legs from stray arrows and attacks.

-Amulet: N/A

Specials:

-Berzerkergang: A self-induced stupor that robs the Einherjar of his ability to think clearly and act with caution. In exchange, it expotentially increases his physical strength and speed as well as his threshold to pain.

Profiles will be compiled and put under this section when the time to begin the RP starts.

Ideally, the RP will start when six successful Einherjar applications have been presented. But, I will start the RP with even fewer if I have to. The initial, tentative start day is Sunday, September 6. This gives you exactly one week and one day to work on your applications.

From this point on, important information and updates will be announced in the second part of this post. I will also make a post with the update, but especially after the RP starts, make sure you keep an eye here in order not to miss them.

More information regarding the RP will be given out as we approach the starting day.

Future updates will be found here.

Wednesday, September 2nd: Valkyrie positions are closed until further notice. The reason for this is that there are not enough members in the RP to warrant a second or third gamemaster beside myself. This will be subject to change in the future, if more members apply, but for now I would like the focus to be on Einherjar positions.

Wednesday, September 2nd: As of now, we have 2 accepted members and 2 pending reservations. I've decided that the minimum number of participants for this RP to start will be 4. However, since even this minimum seems implausible, if by this Sunday less 4 accepted applications have been submitted, I intend to begin a "beta phase", where the members will be able to take part in non-canon quests and missions before the actual storyline begins. Hopefully this will be enough to trigger some interest. Note that participants in the "beta phase", if it is implemented, will earn various bonuses once the RPG begins. The "beta phase" will last until one more week has passed, or until 6 character spots have been filled - whichever is sooner.

Sunday, September 6th: The RP has officially started.

RP Instructions:

The way this RP will be run is quite simple, and you're probably already familiar with it. Each participant is allowed to post once, and then wait until a gamemaster (for now, just me) makes a post related to him. The exception is if two PCs are interacting between themselves, in which case they can continue without the intervention of a gamemaster.

For now, as I said, I'm easing you into the story and the RP's mechanics, so what you should do is fairly obvious by my posts. As the RP progresses more freedom and choices will be allowed for the characters.

You should notice that there is one sole 'stat' that has appeared in your character profiles - your rank. Rank indicates, in one word, combat efficiency. It is there just for one thing: when you engage an enemy, I will state its rank. Use the relation between your ranks as a guide to RPing. As a C-ranked character, you would be very hard-pressed to fight against a B-ranked enemy, and winning alone would be almost impossible. Likewise, you can feel free to make your character casually stronger than a D-ranked opponent, evading or blocking his attacks with relative ease. Spells and weapons also have ranks attached to them. They mean about the same thing. A C-ranked spell or weapon will be very effective to use against a D-ranked opponent, will inflict regular damage against a C-ranked opponent, but will be easily blocked by a B-ranked opponent. As the RP progresses, your character's powers will increase, and he will find better equipment, thus your rank will also increase. Keep ranks in mind when battling as to how you should RP your characters versus the enemy's attacks. Ranks are, from weakest to strongest: E-, E, E+, D-, D, D+, C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-, A, A+, A++, S-, S, S+, S++, EX. Needless to say, starting under the C rank, you needn't worry about A-ranked opponents and above for quite a while.

I'm unsure if you're able to reserve spots in such an RPG - it seems like it'll get popular very quickly - but I'll try and reserve a spot Einherjar for now.

I think I'm going to go with a Magician (Runes). I'm drafting up a profile, but nothing's definite. I'll send it to you so we can work things out... Until the, I'm counting on you to reserve a spot for me, since I don't have the time to post this right now, and I'd like to read up on Norse Mythology before starting up.

This seems really fun. ^^

I will join this as soon as possible, which probably won't be until I get my computer back somewhen in early September - the fifth, if I'm not mistaken. If it's fine by you, I'll reserve an Einherjar spot, but if you have more applications than you need and I haven't sent mine yet, you're free to skip me.

Certainly, spots may be reserved, at least until the current start date (next Sunday). From there on, it will just depend on the number of accepted / pending applicants. However, even though I designed this with a rather low target public in mind, it seems that even my original 6-member goal was a little optimistic, so I don't think there's a reason to worry.

On a side note, if you feel the need to discuss character profiles, or anything regarding the RP, with me before you make your official application, feel free to PM me about it. It won't count as an application until you officially declare it so, thus, if there's anything you want to ask / you need advice on, you can either ask in this thread (so anyone who has similar questions can have them answered by browsing through the topic), or PM me if you so choose.

As Cyber said, I'm working on a posting schedule which will allow for the RP to progress at a satisfactory rate without the members having to post more than, say, once or twice per day - which I believe is fairly reasonable. I do hope you will be able to participate, Rinne.

Count me in!
Einherjar

Name: Igsaen Tempestrage

Gender: Male

Appearance: Wears flowing grey robes with a large green crystalline breastplate that bears the Tempestrage coat of arms.

He is compassionate and kind despite the cruel treatment given to him by his family. He also suffers from hero complex, having to save every living being from danger despite the harm that could come to himself.

Fighting Style: Flowing and dynamic like the wind itself. Involves lots of acrobatic jumps and flips.

Weaponry: A custom-made lance that is approximately 1.5 his body height. It has a large double edged sword-like tip on one end that is split down the middle to catch enemy blades. The other end is a heavy sphere-like pummel to beat down foes.

RP Sample: Igsaen quietly strolled down a country road in the chilly November air. His quiet breath condensed into clouds. The next town was still far in the distance and the sun was just rising, so he was in no hurry. He put his arms behind his head and sighed.

"Beautiful morning isn't it Spear?" he asked his large spear on his back.

"Meh...I've seen better...I don't like cold..." muttered the spear back.

"Ah Spear...You complain too much. It is a beautiful morning. The birds are singing, the sun is shining! There is nothing not to like about this morning!"

Down the road, he saw a small cottage being approached by a shady bunch of characters in black robes. Igsaen quietly approached the cottage by taking cover in the grove of trees on the side of the road. The largest robed figure, apparently the leader, was holding a sword up to a woman's neck. Next to the woman was the slain body of a man, neck cut wide open. Igsaen took no time to hesitate. He charged into the pack of robed figures, lance forward. Most of the figures scattered, but one unfortunate figure was impaled in the stomach. Igsaen pulled out the end, then proceeded to smash another with the blunt end of the lance across the head. The others that managed to get further away drew swords and took defensive stances. Igsaen jumped high into the air and slashed downwards, dispatching another two figures. One of the figures lunged at him, but Igsaen caught the blade in the split in his lance and disarmed him. The one remaining figure backed up and took out a strange mechanism. It looked like a metal longbow attached to a wood board. Igsaen had no time to react. An arrow flew at him and struck him in the right shoulder. He dropped his spear, making an echoing clang on the ground. Before he could recover, his other shoulder was struck with another arrow. The robed figure chuckled slightly, baring filthy teeth, before aiming at Igsaen's chest.

"GO! RUN NOW!" shouted Igsaen at the woman in the cottage before taking the fatal shot. He fell to the ground. Suddenly, he felt all warm and all pain left his body. He closed his eyes and let the silent embrace of death lead him to eternal sleep.

Whew! Long story!

Three problems:

1) I specifically instructed RPers to send me their applications via PM. However, I really didn't expect many people to actually do it (even though I bolded and underlined it...), and since the original reason I gave that instruction (not cluttering the thread) is not applicable, I'll let it be.

2) Not exactly a problem, but this was also an issue with Cyber's application. In the character sheet, you only had to choose between Weaponry and Rune Magic as combat styles - the rest were up to me. Including customized weapons and spells is fine, and I'd eventually give you the option to do it as your character advances, but it is not something you had to do, as initially, you won't be able to use them, since every character will start with standardized equipment.

3) The RP Sample was of passing quality, but there was one problem - you didn't actually include the scene I asked, namely your character being taken to Valhalla by the Valkyries. Describing his death was in fact unneccessary, though it certainly counts as a plus - but the scene you were supposed to narrate was omitted completely. As I've said in the first post, it doesn't have to be something extravagant, so you don't have to do anything much more than completing that RP Sample you posted with that part.

Fix 3), and you will be accepted.

Oh, and a piece of advice: space out your paragraphs. It makes your posts easier to read.

Alright, as of now we have two confirmed RPers, two pending applications and two vacant spots. Therefore, there is still room to join, either as a member or a game master.

Igsaen is pronounced ig-SAY-en. This will be awesome. The only problem with small scale RPs like this is that if one person goes away' date=' the life of the RP is put into grave danger. Let's just hope that doesn't happen.[/quote']

Don't worry. I've planned for this. If a person does not have much time to participate, we will devise a scenario where he goes Missing-In-Action. Then the RP can proceed without problem, and when / if that person comes back, we can have a nice little twist where the others take on a mission to search for him, or something similar. Absences will be handled IC-wise in order to not break the flow of the RP, or at least do so as little as possible.

Then again, if we have 6 members and five go inactive...

I'm usually good at juggling my online commitments with my real-life ones (GXDS Forum' date=' YCM, etc.) with school, sports, volunteer work, and clubs.

Just a few more days until we can begin... It'd be nice to get those other members now. xD[/quote']

Well, as it is, I might extend the start date if I do not receive further notifications from Umbra and Rinne, or noone else joins in. Certainly, four people is good enough, but with just two...

A beta phase? I've never seen that before. Really, I think the best way to attract attention is limited solicitation to high lever RPers like Supreme Gamesmaster and possibly Umbra. If the RPer's Club is not dead, you could try to contact the leader to promote your RP too.

This beta phase. Are the quests when the characters are alive or dead?

I don't think limiting the people who can apply is going to get more members. Besides, I want to give everyone a fair chance, regardless of how famous they are or how much they've RPd. If they can pass the sample test, they're in.

Hmm, it seems I was misunderstood. Think of the beta phase as a prologue to the RP. The storyline begins at a certain point before Ragnarok. The beta phase will begin before that point, covering what occurs beforehand. In short - it could well be a part of the main storyline, the only reason it's not is because I'm waiting for more members to "officially" start this up and came up with this idea in order to keep the RP alive till then. If enough members join and the beta phase is not needed, you'll still get to do these quests in the future, in an optional Gaiden. Also, storylines regarding your characters' past when they were alive will also be included in optional Gaidens.

The storyline might seem a little uniform during the first part, but it will begin to branch off and take more interersting, individual twists soon afterwards.
