Obama was talking about this. He said he wanted to "level the playing field with Korea, India, and others". Who cares?

I might be okay if the school day is increased by 10-20 minutes, but 8-5 is not fair at all. I know we might get better jobs, but we learn so much as it is.

tl;dr: No, this idea of increasing school hours is stupid.

Most jobs follow the generic 9-to-5 schedule. So why go to school at 7?

And even colleges don't start before 9 (earliest class).

You can get classes as early as 7' date=' I think.

Wow. That's a stupid argument. In a global economy, where everything is highly competitive, you can't say "well, I already have to do so much", and slack off. Other countries will overtake you and take all the jobs.

At the same time, I doubt increasing the hours would do any real good. America has a completely different mindset and teaching style than countries such as China, Japan, and India.

As it is' date=' kids who are earlier of age tend to wake up earlier and sleep earlier.

For example, a 7 year old would fall asleep at 9 and wake up at 7, while a 13 year old would fall asleep at 10:30 and wake up at 8:45.

So older kids should have school later.

[/quote']

I am a 12 year old and i wake up for 7th grade at like 6:55 AM

Also PLEASE do not extended school day bad enough I have to go for 5 days

I heard of something new Obama wants to do with schools on the news. He wants to cut out summer vacation and make school all year round' date=' from 7 to dinner time, I guess 5:00. What do you guys and girls think about that?

[b']NOOOOOO![/b] I cannot take that long of school to much work no enough down time

School is already enough of a pain for me I start at 7:50 AM to 2:30 PM

He extendeds it and I will evantually fall asleep in those last classes.

There is no reason he would extended it because school is long enough.

funk you. Most schools go 8:00-3:00 Stop your jabroniing.

I'm British' date=' and my school is 7:40AM -- 6:05PM

Independent school, longer hours than any local school and much better test results, clearly works out to some degree.

Standardized testing is a retarded way to gauge intelligence.

Extending the school day is not going to make people smarter. INstead, more kids will not pay attention because the school day is too long(THis is what kids in my school have said). You can't make people learn if they don't want to learn. THe kids who want to have a good career and be financially secure when they are adults are the ones who pay attention in school. Don't make them have to sit through more school because others don't want to learn.

The first two sentences were entirely accurate.

The rest of the paragraph was bullshit.

Those most successful in life are very often NOT those most qualified.

Just so you guys know, most of this topic is two and a half months old. But since the posts since the necrobump have contained actual content, I'm not locking this.

School hours have diminishing returns - each school hour provides less than the hour before it. The difference between a five-hour day and a six-hour day is less than the difference between a six-hour day and a seven-hour day. Extend the day too long, and the returns eventually become negative - attention dwindles, focus is spread too thinly, consolidation fails, and so forth. This is worst of all in the system described in the first post of this topic, where the extra time is dedicated to standardized test preparation, which is a useless skillset with no applications to anything.

I go to the Seiko Academy, 4th genius middle school in Japan.

My opinion: every country should have several classes of schools so that the genius get more genius and the stupid can get genius. That's good.

And with extended school? If the recess is the reason for that, I'm okay.

As for the other...

I simply think that the easyness of schoolwork is the problem, not the kids.
