China's High School Education System - Or at least, where I'm talking about.

Recommended Posts

Well, I called my cousin in China, and she told me about her currently ongoing Grade 10 school life. Which is total torture beyond child labour.

But before I explain what happens in school. Let me talk about what the government supposedly did to help them out.

First, they started to eliminate education fees. Yay! But wait, with the textbook fees and other fees that are required for school, you're pretty much paying the say amount back. Damn.

Oh, and did I mention? The high schools are in the most random places ever, that if you live far and don't have money, you'd rather just live in dorm.

Dorms cost a crapload of money, and you gotta pay for it monthly. Damn.

My cousin lives in a poor family. Simple as that. They don't have enough to support the family. My aunt hasn't even gotten past elementary school, and simply works in a crappy job where you don't even get more than $1 an hour. And that's a very high conversion rate to CAD or USD.

They don't have any money for food, so they just eat crappy stuff at home. That's really all they eat. It doesn't even compare to the luxuries we have in food here.

And here's where I start talking about the high schools themselves. The cafeteria food is even worse than the food she eats at home. And you still need to pay extra for everything you take. Like wtf.

There is only one lineup, and that lineup has thousands of people. It takes at least half an hour, if you're lucky. If you're not, you end up not having time to eat your lunch. And then you're screwed.

By this point, if I were in her position, I would've just stuck with being uneducated. It's not worth the starvation and money.

Six days at school, and only the Saturday off for you to go home, visit your relatives, and whatever. You then leave for school Sunday.

And then she told me her schedule.

...

...

I won't talk about it. You will just need to see yourself:

11:01 p.m. - 5:59 a.m.

Sleep

6 a.m.

Wake-up call

6:01 a.m. - 6:59 a.m.

Morning activities (change of clothing, bathroom, breakfast, etc.) and going to class

7 a.m. - noon

In class

noon - 12:59 p.m.

Lunch break (half-hour lineup for lunch, meal, bathroom, etc.) and going to class

1 p.m. - 1:59 p.m.

Mandatory sleep break

2 p.m. - 5:29 p.m.

In class again

5:30 p.m. - 6:59 p.m.

Night break (laundry, shower, dinner, etc.)

7 p.m. - 9:59 p.m.

In class yet again

10 p.m. - 10:59 p.m.

Going to dorm, and night break (laundry, shower, dinner, etc.)

11 p.m.

Mandatory curfew

...And there we have it. The whole day.

Who in the right mind has a mandatory nap? You wouldn't even be able to sleep with all the stress and problems going on. It's just a huge waste of time.

Oh, and did I mention? The only times you get to do your massive amounts of homework would be whenever you have a tiny bit of free time, and during Saturday, when you're not at school. That's it.

So before you guys say your life sucks, think about it. My cousin has it even worse than you do, and she manages to survive.

Of course, this is not the case with every single high school in China. This is the case for the ones where she lives. And she lives in a very very poor region.

Discuss, or give words of sympathy or something. I know you guys don't give a sh*t anyway.

Wow. I couldn't survive. I really couldn't. I'd end up forgetting assignments. Really out of frustration for lack of fun. I like my dose of fun.

As for positives to the situation:

-It could ALWAYS be worse. No matter where you are, what happens to you, you can always say "It could be worse."

-She is doing something that I'm SURE plenty of people COULDN'T. IMO, that is something she can be proud of.

-Every dog has his/her day. One day, she will have peace, and she will have a good day. Maybe more, and maybe it will be a good week, a good month, a good year, or a good lifetime to come. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Sounds similar to the South African education system. My annoying Stepmother (who is South African) rants about how students did the equivalent of 10 A levels or something obscenely ridiculous in years 12 and 13, whereas the average is to take 4 and even most find that challenging.

I feel sorry for your cousin not only because she's having to work so hard, but also because it's not fair for her to be enslaved to such a ridiculous education system. Forcing one to work too hard will only result in being overworked and hence instead of completing a few pieces of work to good ability, she's being forced to cram in a load and not learn as much from it.

I just hope she gets some damn good qualifications to show from the whole thing that'll help her later in life.

i know what it's like to be poor (my family was poor for almost a year) your cousin is lucky because my family had to live in a car a few years ago (in 2003) and i don't need school because i'm already well educated (except for times tables, division & some u.s. history)

p.s. my family is almost financialy stable because my mom is wasting money on her hair (even though she could do it herself) and she buys sheet she doesn't need or never uses

I'd move to America. ;D

You were the one who explicitly stated to me that you had no idea why everybody wanted to move to America and that actually you thought it was rather crappy.

Reading this made me appreciate my surroundings.

America > China

When it comes to edumacation, at least.

The whole point is that because of the H1N1 flu, China pretty much rejected all applicants from poor families. Which is bullsh*t, and I'd totally stick up the middle finger to.

I don't know if I mentioned yet, but the food is first come first serve, so if the food runs out by the time you get there, you have to starve.

She also did mention that she couldn't learn a thing. It was too stressful.

So why live in China if life sucks that much? I doubt there are any job opportunities other than hard labor jobs.

It's not that you WANT to live in China, it's more that you CAN'T GET OUT of China.

My aunt constantly begs my mom to at least help her get to Canada, but as much as we try, the Canadian and Chinese governments aren't helping in any way. It's all money, money, money.

Doh! I forgot about that. I am a failure. :[

There has to be some way to get out of China. Maybe even move to Japan where the jobs are actually thriving. Then again, nothing can happen with a lack of money.

The best things in life are not free.

Yes ЅϯᵲåώӀӞ℮ᴙʀɣ that what your family should come to Canada because we have programs that help People from China and other third world countrys

Um... All the methods of bringing people from China to Canada relate to money in one form or another.

My mother isn't stupid. She's already contacted several people about all the methods. Some require a crapload of money, and the more illegal methods have been blocked off or are unavailable.

have they tried getting passports in a legal way?

Um... You can get a passport' date=' but that doesn't help you.

1 p.m. - 1:59 p.m.

Mandatory sleep break

I love China

And what if you don't sleep?

China kills you?

You do know that half the time you can't get to sleep, right?
