And if we make it simpler, it turns into too broad of a question. There is really no solution for this, but try to use smaller words.

As a sadist, I can honestly say, I'd love to be the one torturing people. as a non-masochist, I wouldn't love being tortured.

Let's say you were arrested for being involved in terrorist activities, but you aren't really a terrorist. sure, you may know someone who is, you may have been seen with them. I've been seen with a lot of people, but does that mean i know them, even as much as their names? no, it doesn't. so anyway, you don't talk, because you don't know anything. they start torturing you to make you talk. what are you going to do? are you going to go all masochist and let them keep torturing you, or are you going to pretend to know something and give whatever bogus information comes to mind? and then they kill you anyway because you told them what they wanted to hear despite it all being fake information you made up on the spot so they'd stop torturing you.

Also, what if the person is innocent? How many times do you think an innocent person has been tortured because someone else "knew" they were guilty? Perfect example: Salem witch hunts.

 

Because never in the entirety of history, have innocent people been made to confess to crimes they didn't do via torture.

Depending on which kind of torture you are talking about...

 

Torture, any form of it, affects people differently. And torture is not only human-produced. You can look at terminal diseases as tortures themselves.

 

Then you ask yourself...is torture worse than death? Well, according to the law in use, it is not. That's probably why completely unpainful death via strong poison is the worst punishment you can get in the United States...(at least, theoretically).

 

Back to the topic...well, virtually, all of us are a bit Schadenfreudian (like seeing others suffer), so this...torture thing would actually never cease to be a real world reality. And even if we would stop torturing our fellow brothers, things like starvation, hurricanes, uncurable diseases, floods and animal attacks would still induce us pain.

 

As for me, as hard as this would be to believe, I have almost never endured physical pain. You can call me a wuss if you like, but that's it. Never broke a bone, never got any serious bruises, never cut myself with glass or metal, never injured myself due to a high-temperature source (no burns). So I don't really know how bad torture would be...
