Lemniscate
Symbolic speech =/= regular clothing you happen to like. :/ 1- You don't have to like it.2- Yes it does. Really. So what are you trying to protest when you wear those jeans and that cool t-shirt from American Eagle? And you're going to have to get used to wearing a tie when you go and actually get a job' date=' might as well start early... Unless you plan on explaining freedom of symbolic speech to your boss when you come in wearing ripped jeans. Good luck.[/quote'] This is about government, not private enterprise. Private entities have all the leeway they want when it comes to imposing limits on clothing and personal items in the workplace, government, on the other hand, does not have that ability, as government is firmly controlled by the constitution, which defines clothing as protected speech. Now, the only time that right is curtailed, is where the wearing of a particular article of clothing represents a clear and present danger to the United States. Lemniscate
They are supposed to, whether or not that actually happens is open to interpretation, but as we are only discussing things in a purely hypothetical sense, I see no reason to infer corruption at this time. RestLess-BoTics
In my elementary school, students were required to wear a uniform. Many students complained, mainly because there were only two sets of uniforms; one for the boys and one for the girls. So, not much diversity there. Still, knowing that everyone wore the same thing, no one had to spend their time worrying about their "outfit" every single day. Currently in my high school, no one at all is the complaining about the uniform. Why? Well, my high school's uniform is extremely diverse, and there are hundreds of options on what to wear each day. Plus, the administration isn't strict about uniform rules, so altering your uniform is pretty fun. Everyone can wear their uniform accustomed to their own style, and no one "looks down" on anyone, because there are about 2000+ kids in my high school. Everyone will respect your style, and you don't have to worry about your clothes "standing out" when compared to a non-uniform school.
Lemniscate
I honestly think that, in the end, it is a decision for the community, some communities are fine with them, in some places they work, but in some places, they don't. There's no reason for any sort of top-down governmental mandate that people wear uniforms, as in the end, for some places it will cause more harm than good.Let the people decide for themselves. Tabris
Shouldn't. It stifles creativity, forces people to either toe the line or cross it (and burn the line on his wake). Blah blah blah blah.
Spartan919
I like how everyone whines about individuality when 99% of the student body wears the same things from aeropostle and abercrombie. This dude's got it down.
Lemniscate
1- Never heard of the first place.2- For places where everyone is dirt poor (like where I live), most people can't afford abercrombie, and those who can are considered gay. RestLess-BoTics
Haha, abercrombie was only "in style" like what, two years ago? x] Wearing designer clothing such as abercrombie, shows everyone that you're trying too hard to look decent. What some people don't realize, is that you can be "stylish" even without all that expensive clothing. Now I'm not saying that I don't wear any designer clothing myself; when I attend formal events, I usually slap on a Ralph Lauren shirt and jacket, 'cause that stuff looks nice. :]
Lemniscate
Exactly, but in the end, again, it comes down to personal preference, and letting individual communities decide what they want to do.

CinnamonStar
Well I guess not all the schools would add uniforms. But personally I wouldn't mind going to one with such a thing. It just doesn't bother me; I could still express myself through what I say and who I am. And maybe people would focus more on their studies than on how everyone looks.I never figured why it's so important to look good at school anyway. Last year I didn't go there half of the time so I don't really care.:) And if you want to express yourself and be "individual" (whatever that means nowadays), join the arts group or a fashion design school or something. Zaner: Well if I know people I don't have a problem with telling them apart. Even if they wear the same stuff. You'd still recognize mohawks, emo haircuts and all. Guest King of Games
My school has a uniform, i think just so the cops know at which school to look for the kids they saw earlier.I don't mind it, no one can tell when i wear the same clothes two days in a row, and there are few options to our uniform (skirt, pants, shorts, golf shirt, dress shirt, sweater, some different colors) and we get one day a month where we dont have to wear our uniform. And people still accessorize alot for their individuality or w.e.
SmallieBigs
Well another reason why uniforms shouldn't be worn is that slobs would mess up the uniform while eating then they would have to wash the crap out of it. Besides why would anyone wear the school uniform if it was like the 60's but in a movie here's the title. The Dude who Would Not Wear His Uniform. So it's like he walks to the school wearing his black leather jacket and torn jeans then he goes to detention then he gets expelled. After a couple days he eggs the school and vandalises it in other horrible ways. It would be hysterical. Back on topic yeah it may lead to pointless detention for new kids that don't even know. As a matter of a fact probaly everyone in my school would agree with me, but that's an approximation.EDIT: Yeah again I just don't like the school uniform well it's just I've played Bully the uniform looks a bit weird to me a vest a T-shirt and some pants. I don't like vests either they just look like your in half autumn and half winter. Even though it does look a little cool.
