Dark
I use words like "lol" and "omg" rarely, so it doesn't really affect my essay-writing skills.

Falkon 491
I have never' date=' will never, and do not plan on ever, making such a foolish mistake. The internetz is the internetz, and IRL is IRL. If the internet were to leak into real life...(shivers)[/quote'] OH NOEZ!!!!! PEDOBEAR IZ REEL!!!!!!!!!! *passes out* But really, anyone who uses internet shorthand on any written paper for any class or professional assignment should have a dictionary stapled to their forehead. Good luck getting a staple through a dictionary. A nail would probably work better >_> I throw dictionaries at people who write and talk in acronyms (writing applies to serious papers). I have literally done this. All of these solutions and more would work with my friends. I've actually gone so far as to stuff a dictionary into my friends bookbag in each class :) it kept getting heavier until he was like "Oh em gee, double you tee eff is in my bag?" I laughed so hard and said "Maybe it's the English Language that you never use." He looked and was like "Oh gawd....it IS." I died laughing at his expression. :O :)
Exyst
I instinctively tried using ctrl+z on an IRL handwritten piece of work... I usually type essays now' date=' since it's a lot faster.[/quote'] I do that a lot too, people think I'm mentally retarded. owait
Dark
In note-taking, I always use shorthand for words. Makes writing go so much faster. People becomes "ppl", I usually take out a majority of "is" and "and".
Kizzi
I've seen teachers use "WTF" a couple of times during marking, and people saying "lol" is pretty much commonplace around here.
Lina-chan
Internet vernacular has a time and place. It is an individual's resposibility to recognize those times and places. As has been previously stated already, if someone was stupid enough to place a "lol" in an actual written paper... well, Her Highness is too tired to think of some witty punishment~ In short, Queen-sama disapproves. <
Amethyst Phoenix
I throw dictionaries at people who write and talk in acronyms (writing applies to serious papers). I have literally done this. Aggressive kid is stupid aggressive kid. Banned member is annoying banned troll. Also, perhaps I should further explain. I don't hit them with it, I wait until they're not paying attention, aim the dictionary, and throw it so it lands right on top of their paper. It makes a loud noise and scares them. Plus I can re-use the dictionary. Eco-friendly enough you?
Jolta
If there are any Dictionaries like that, allow me to incinerate them. Oh gawd, The interwebz can be a Fiend sometimes.
Muluck
I have several friends who speak nothing but internet lingo. But when it comes time to do school paper work, they are bar none better then almost anyone you could throw at them.Using Internet lingo doesn't change the person's ability to read and write, it's how they use it. Lina-chan
Exactly - it's about time and place. Using it in casual conversation is fine, or online even, but you're totally stupid if you use it in school~
-Griffin
Not completely related, but I have been writing notes next to my computer, selected something and pressed, CTRL-C, I then spent the next five minutes wondering why it wouldn't paste. I dislike any form of this short hand offline and am even put off by it online. Using it in any form of essay is the sort of thing that would make me wish to hang myself. Then again, I'm the sort of person who sketches out the meter of any poem I read in my mind and notes every damn poetic technique they use - I like my language.
