CinnamonStar
(An example of syncretism is a Christian who practices tarot reading, runes magic or Hatha Yoga, believes in reincarnation, may or may not go to the church, worships Earth spirits and fairies, practices rituals when walking in the forest and possibly celebrates Christmas, Samhain and the moon cycles altogether. …yeah you get it.) Well I’d like to see where this goes. In today's society the gaps between different belief systems seem more and more blurred, institutional religions and dogmas are losing their standing and every year hundred thousands of people are stepping out of diverse churches/other institutions but maintain their personal religious beliefs.Scientific knowledge and progress are there but at the same time new religious movements are coming up, others have returned and gained “mainstream” acceptance so to speak. How do you view the current evolution of society in terms of religions, is it pointing more and more at a syncretic spirituality? Are we moving towards a secularization of society (religious values, traditions etc. losing their importance; a social/political life not related to religions)? (This is not a topic about whether a religion is right or wrong and we don’t care about your beliefs, unless it’s relevant in the discussion.)(This is also a topic about nowadays, not the society 500 years ago.) Dark
Nah, we (meaning myself) like flaming religions. D:< I think I understand the topic at hand. People go to church less. So people are slowly breaking away from religion. :
The Dark One
Certainly, the general populace, at least here in America, is very noncommittal in its devotion to religion. We are a very secular society. Yet, most also seem to have a fear of letting go completely of their beliefs, and thus the society today: Supposed Christians who basically inherit all the bad attributes of religion while taking away none of the good. Often discriminatory and derogatory to those of other or no religion, but also without the virtues their own religion teaches. I think things will stay much the same as they are. Religion isn't "cool" anymore, but then the removal of religion is seen as terrible as well.
CinnamonStar
People go to church less. So people are slowly breaking away from religion. :3 Lolno not at all. What kind of concept/idea is this?0_o Syncretism is the complete opposite of it.Since when do Christians have to go to church?Ever heard of the difference between practicants and non-practicant religious people? And about individual religosity? Going to church is an outdated concept anyway, some people still do it and I respect that but there have been changes in society. We don't live in the Middle Ages anymore. How's the current society evolving in terms of religions and beliefs? Not what you'd personally like to see but how do you view the current movements?Do you think religious people are heading more and more towards syncretic spirituality or is the current society heading towards a secular one? Yasu
Syncretism, most people need to believe in something "divine" (Immortality ftw).
Willieh
I'm kind of confused here. Wouldn't religious Syncretism be like... taking the elements of all religions and creating a religion out of them? Because in that case, it'd be easier just to eliminate religion all together... I mean... Think of how hard it would be to get people to compromise on a new religion?
Yasu
Now that I think it better...Religion is being taken "less seriously" that's why the bounds are "blurring".I find it funny.Secularization is actually leading to Syncretism.
Scatty
I am quite confident that the number of people turning Atheist is exponentially increasing right now. I actually think that by 2200, more than 50% of the people will be Atheists, and by 2400, believing in a divinity would most likely be treated as a mental illness. Not that I want to blame religious people... About religions merging together..well, frankly, they seem more and more.
