Amethyst Phoenix
How else does the government get money for various things other than from taxes? "I don't mean ridiculously low taxes, but fairly small compared to what we have now." I guarantee you, they could run off 10-15% if they stopped pissing it away on pointless stuff. Taxing the rich more could affect their spending and help pull us into a deeper recession. It's more sensible to lighten poor people's taxes in an attempt to get them to spend more. So poor people can say, "Haha rich people! funk you!" Cutting the defense budget and exporting more goods would do a lot more for the economy. Dark
Why should you be taxed the same amount as someone making twice as much as you? You'll lose more money and be discouraged into buying things. I don't believe in the trickle down effect, so sorry.
Lina-chan
I'm afraid I do have to agree with that~ It doesn't seem like it's very fair for the rich to pay more...to the rich people, anyhow. But from a logical point of view, it really makes no sense for you to charge peasants the same amount that you would charge nobles~ The Nobles have the money to pay higher taxes, and it's not as though the Kingdom is acting them to fork over half of their Gold, after all. Honestly, the higher taxes that they would pay would still pseem rather insignificant next to their average income, so there's no sense in complaining about it. <

Amethyst Phoenix
Whether we're taking money from the rich and handing it to poor, or making some system that's end result is virtually the same as that, the outcome is the same. Indirectly killing someone is just as bad as directly killing someone, no? Let's say there's a music star. She makes 1 million dollars. We could tax her for 800,000 of her money, and let her keep 200,000. The government gets more money and then the poor get more by welfare right? Well, if we tax her for only 200,000, letting her keep 800,000, some things happen: She can do more concerts. This provides jobs. Crew to run the lights, organize the thing, people to transport her, heck it even provides construction and maintenance if we take into account building the location that she performs at. Since she makes more money, her work ethic improves and she works harder, knowing she'll get a big benefit. Since she'll be doing more concerts, she'll become more well known, and more people will want to see her. If she tries harder, people will want to see her even more. These people will then work harder, doing higher quality jobs in their given occupations, inspired to buy tickets to see her perform. With the extra money to spend, she could even donate some of it to charity, or start a fundraiser, because famous people can easily do that. Are you seeing why lower percentage taxes and non-increasing percentage taxes on the rich are good? If we lower taxes on all people, not just the poor or just the rich, the economy becomes much better just by naturally doing its thing. It's a much better solution than handing over money to government and letting them artificially stimulate the economy by throwing it around. Not to mention the loss of money from collecting taxes, printing the forms, filing it, paying the people who decide where it's spent. Oh, and the people feel better because they have more freedom and wealth. It's a win-win. @Willieh: You've got the right idea, but I can't help noticing this hammering on the defense budget. We actually have lots of other silly things that we could cut. In fact, with a 15% tax rate and cutting frivolous spending, we could become more prosperous AND keep our defense budget that high, with little to no ill effect. Quick Note: If the defense budget maintains it's current funding it could become nearly impossible to sustain any reasonable domestic budget. Lina-chan
In what world do you live, Phoenix-chan, where higher taxes for the rich means an 80% tax? That's outrageous, and completely inaccurate. Not to mention that you must also consider the individual~ Just because she CAn do several good things with her extra money doesn't mean she WILL. Other than the bad course of action being less bad, but still undesirable.
Lina-chan
Well, I'm still of the opinion that slightly higher taxes on the rich, just slightly mind you, would on the whole benefit the economy~ It would allow the rich still plenty of money to stimulate the economy, because Capitalism does in fact work when done correctly, while meanwhile, the Poor would be able to cope more easily, and would have a better chance of participating in the capitalism themselves, dear~ If everyone is eventually offered this chance, the economy will experience a larger rise in the longrun, and there would be a much wider-spread benefit~<
