Once per turn, during your Main Phase, if you control this monster, you can equip this card to any monster you control as an Equip Spell Card OR unequip the Union equipment and Special Summon this card in face-up Defence Position. Any card equipped with this card loses 1000 ATK and DEF. When a monster equipped with this card attacks, place the attack target on top of this card without applying Damage calculation. During your End Phase, destroy all cards on top of this card, and place 1 "Grace" counter on this card. When this card has 5 or more "Grace" counters on it, unequip the Union equipment and Special Summon this card in face-up Attack Position. Your opponent can draw 1 card. (1 monster can be equipped with 1 Union Monster at a time. If the equipped monster was destroyed by battle, destroy this card instead.)

as for giving your opponent a 5 card draw power, that seems to do WAY too much harm to yourself

Chances of that effect even happening is slim. A card which has lost 1000 ATK and DEF points can probably be knocked down, even if it takes two hits. If the card has to wait, at the least, 5 turns to get to 5 counters, it would probably be destroyed in the process.
