Max Darkness
I realise this has been done before but I decided to see what I could come up with. And before you ask, all the pieces mentioned are legal chess pieces.
Chess]
The pieces everyone are familiar with: King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook and Pawn. Effect: This card can only be Summoned by Tributing 2 "Chess" monsters or "Pawn Token" cards you control while you control 3 or more "Chess" monsters. This card is also treated as a Warrior-Type monster. When this card is Summoned, select the monster your opponent controls with the highest Level. Your opponent takes damage equal to the selected monster’s Level x 150. Once per turn, you can skip your Draw Phase. If you do, Special Summon 1 Level 6 or lower "Chess" monster from your Deck, Graveyard or Extra Deck, ignoring the Summoning Conditions. The Summoned monster is destroyed during your opponent’s Main Phase 2. Once per turn, during your End Phase, you can move this card into an unoccupied Monster Card Zone on your side of the field. If no Monster Card your opponent controls is in the same column as this card, this card can attack your opponent directly by halving its ATK. When this card inflicts Direct Damage to your opponent, put 1 Checkmate Counter on this card. When 3 Checkmate Counters are on this card, you win the Duel. Effect: This card can only be Summoned by Tributing 2 "Chess" monsters or "Pawn Token" cards you control. This card is also treated as a Warrior-Type monster. When this card is Summoned, you can select 1 "Chess" monster in your hand and decrease its Level by 2. During each of your Standby Phases, you can select 2 cards you control. Until your opponent’s End Phase, the selected cards cannot be removed from the field. (Damage calculation is applied normally.) You cannot select the same cards in consecutive turns. When this card destroys a monster by battle, your opponent discards a number of cards from the top of their Deck equal to the number of Level 5 or higher "Chess" monsters you control. Effect: This card can only be Summoned by Tributing 1 "Chess" monster or "Pawn Token" you control. This card is also treated as a Psychic-Type monster. If your opponent controls fewer monsters than you, during your Battle Phase, this card can attack your opponent directly by halving its ATK. If you activate this effect, all other monsters you control cannot declare an attack this turn. When this card is removed from the field, you can Tribute 1 "Chess" monster or "Pawn Token" you control to destroy 1 monster your opponent controls whose Level is equal to or less than the Tributed monster. Effect: You can Special Summon this card from your Deck if you control a face-up Level 4 or higher "Chess" monster. If this card is Summoned this way, this card loses 700 ATK and DEF, until your End Phase. If this card is Normal Summoned or Set, you can Tribute 1 "Pawn Token" you control for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to the ATK and DEF of the Tributed token. This card is also treated as a Beast-Type monster. Once per turn, during your Standby Phase, you can pay 700 Life Points. If you do, double the Battle Damage this card inflicts to your opponent during your Battle Phase. Effect: You can Normal Summon or Set this card from your Deck if you control a face-up "Chess" monster. This card is also treated as a Rock-Type monster. If this card attacks a monster in the same column, this card gains 500 ATK during the Damage Step only. If no Monster Card your opponent controls is in the same column as this card, once per turn, you can destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls. Effect: This card gains 100 ATK for each "Chess" monster you control. When this card is Summoned, and once per turn, you can Special Summon 1 "Pawn Token" (Machine-Type, LIGHT, Level 2, ATK 0, DEF 500). These tokens cannot declare an attack, cannot be declared as attack targets, cannot be Tributed except for the Tribute Summon of a "Chess" monster, or by "Chess" Monster Cards’ effects and do not occupy a Monster Card Zone. You can only control 3 "Pawn Token" cards.
Chess pieces that are used in chess variations or are mixed into the regular army to provide a more varied style of play. Effect: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by Tributing 1 "Chess Bishop" you control. This card is also treated as a Psychic-Type monster. When this card is Summoned, you can remove the Tributed monster from play for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to the Tributed Monster’s Level x 50. During each of your Standby Phases, you can move this card to an adjacent unoccupied Monster Card Zone. Once during your opponent’s turn, you can discard 1 "Chess" monster in your Deck to make this card un-targetable by monsters your opponent controls, until your Draw Phase. If there is a Spell or Trap Card in this card’s column, you can destroy it to destroy up to 2 Spell or Trap Cards your opponent controls. When this card is removed from the field, Special Summon 1 "Chess Bishop" from your Graveyard in Attack Position. Effect: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by Tributing 1 "Chess - Knight" you control. This card is also treated as a LIGHT monster. When this card is Summoned, you can remove the Tributed monster from play for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to the Tributed Monster’s Level x 50. This card inflicts Piercing Damage. If this card destroys a Level 4 or lower non-"Chess" monster, your opponent discards a number of cards from their hand equal to the destroyed monster’s Level /2 (If the destroyed monster’s Level was odd, round up). When this card is removed from the field, Special Summon 1 "Chess - Knight" from your Graveyard in Attack Position. Effect: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by Tributing 1 "Chess Rook" you control. This card is also treated as a Rock-Type monster. When this card is Summoned, you can remove the Tributed monster from play for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to the Tributed Monster’s Level x 50. If a Level 4 or lower Monster Card your opponent controls is in the same column as this card, you can skip your Battle Phase to destroy that monster. Once per turn, during your End Phase, you can discard 1 card in your hand to draw 1 card. ). When this card is removed from the field, Special Summon 1 "Chess Rook" from your Graveyard in Attack Position. Effect: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by Tributing 1 "Chess Pawn" you control. When this card is Summoned, you can remove the Tributed monster from play for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to the Tributed Monster’s Level x 50. This card can attack twice per turn. If this card attacks a Level 3 or lower monster, this card’s ATK becomes 2000 during damage calculation only. When this card is removed from the field, Special Summon 1 "Chess Pawn" from your Graveyard in Attack Position.
Pieces that, in the game of chess, have a pair of abilities taken from two other pieces. A Superqueen for example can move like a Queen or Knight, and can jump like a Knight. Effect: "Chess - Knight" + "Chess - Queen"This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Fusion Summon. This card is also treated as a Beast-Warrior-Type monster. This card is treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a "Chess" monster. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, your opponent cannot select a monster as an attack target except "Chess Superqueen". Monsters this card destroys are removed from play instead. When this card destroys a monster, you can discard 1 Spell or Trap Card from your hand to remove 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls from play. Once per turn, you can remove 1 "Chess" monster in your Graveyard from play for this card to gain ATK and DEF equal to half the removed monster’s ATK and DEF, until your opponent’s Standby Phase. If this card attacks your opponent directly, put 1 Checkmate Counter on this card (Max. 1). If this card is Tribute Summoned for the Tribute Summon of "Chess King", move any Checkmate Counter(s) on this card to the Summoned monster. Effect: "Chess - Bishop" + "Chess - Knight"This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Fusion Summon. This card is also treated as a Psychic-Type monster. This card is treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a "Chess" monster. Once per turn, you can Tribute any number of "Pawn Token" cards you control to destroy an equal number of Level 6 or lower monsters, or Spell or Trap Cards on the field. If this card destroys a Defense Position, your opponent discards a number of cards from the top of their Deck equal to the Level of the destroyed monster. When this card is destroyed by battle, Special Summon 1 of the Fusion Material Monsters in face-up Defense Position. Effect: "Chess - Knight" + "Chess - Rook"This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Fusion Summon. Twice per turn, you can move this card to an unoccupied Monster Card Zone on your side of the field. Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 "Pawn Token" you control to destroy all cards your opponent controls in this card’s column. If you do, discard cards from your hand equal to the number of cards destroyed this way. If this card attacks a Level 4 or lower monster, this card inflicts Piercing Damage. When this card is Tributed, you can pay 1000 Life Points for this card to be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a "Chess" monster. Effect: "Chess - Knight" + "Chess - Pawn"If this card is Summoned other than by Fusion Summon, it is destroyed during your opponent’s End Phase. When this card is Summoned, you can discard 1 card from the top of your Deck to Special Summon 1 "Pawn Token" (Machine-Type, LIGHT, Level 2, ATK 0, DEF 500). Once per turn, you can reduce this card’s ATK by 800, until your End Phase. If you do, once per turn, you can negate the effects of Spell and Trap Cards that designate this card and this card inflicts Piercing Damage.
Based on moves and strategies found in chess. Effect: Activate only while you control a face-up "Chess-Pawn". Special Summon any number of "Chess" monsters from your Deck (Max. 2). Pay Life Points equal to the total Levels of monsters Summoned this way x 100. Effect: Equip only to "Chess - Knight" or "Chess - Rook". The equipped monster is switched to Attack Position and cannot switch its battle position. If the equipped monster attacks a monster whose Level is lower than it’s, destroy the monster with this card’s effect without applying damage calculation. If the equipped monster is attacked by monster whose Level is higher than it’s, destroy this card and the equipped monster and lose Life Points equal to the original ATK of the equipped monster. Effect: All battle damage a "Chess" monster's controller takes is halved. If "Marine Chess" or "Xiangqi" is activated while this card is face-up on the field, this card is not removed from the field. If a "Chess" monster you control would be removed from the field by a card effect, you can select and activate 1 of the following effects:- Discard 1 Monster Card from your hand to negate the effect and destroy the card.- Roll 1 six-sided die. If the die result is 1 or 6, negate the effect and destroy the card. Effect: Activate only when you control more monsters than your opponent. Tribute 1 Level 5 or higher "Chess" monster you control to destroy 1 monster your opponent controls. Effect: During your first Standby Phase, you can add this card to your hand by discarding 1 Spell or Trap Card from your hand. Activate only during your second turn. Destroy all monsters on the field. Effect: Activate only during your opponent's Battle Phase. Switch any number of "Chess" monsters you control to Defense Position. Effect: Activate only when you control a face-up "Chess" monster. After activation, select 1 "Chess" monster you control. As long as this card and the selected monster remain face-up on the field, your opponent cannot use any Card Zones in the selected monster’s column. If the selected monster is removed from the field, destroy this card. Effect: Equip only to "Chess-Pawn". During each of your Standby Phases, put 1 Royal Counter on this card. If the equipped monster would be destroyed by battle, you can remove 1 Royal Counter from this card. If you do, the equipped monster is not and any Battle Damage the equipped monster’s controller takes is halved. When this card has 5 Royal Counters on it, Tribute the equipped monster and this card to Special Summon 1 Level 7 or higher "Chess" monster from your Deck, ignoring the Summoning Conditions. Effect: Activate only when you control a face-up "Chess" monster and both players control the same number of monsters. As long as both players control the same number of monsters, both players must skip their Battle Phase.
Based on moves and strategies found in chess. Effect: Activate only when a "Chess" monster you control destroys a monster your opponent controls. Special Summon the destroyed monster to your side of the field in face-up Defense Position. The Summoned monster is treated as a "Chess" monster and has its effect negated. When the monster that destroyed the Summoned monster is removed from the field, destroy the Summoned monster. Effect: Activate only when your opponent targets a "Chess - King" or "Chess - Queen" you control and you control a different "Chess" monster. All non-targeted "Chess" monsters you control are switched to Defense Position, and as long as this card remains face-up on the field, the targeted monster is un-targetable by card effects. If you do not control any monsters except the targeted monster, destroy this card.
Marine Chess]Bizarre pieces that form counterparts to the orthodox pieces, but with different abilities Effect: This card's name is treated as "Chess - Queen". If "Marine Chess" is not on the field, this card is destroyed. This card is also treated as a Warrior-Type monster. This card can only be Normal Summoned or Set by Tributing 2 "Chess" monsters you control. This card inflicts Piercing Damage. This card can only be Normal Summoned or Set by Tributing 1 "Chess" monster you control. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent, destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls. Once per turn, you can skip your Battle Phase. If you do, destroy a number of Level 6 or lower monsters your opponent controls equal to the number of "Marine Chess" monsters you control. If this card would be removed from the field, except by its own effect, you can Tribute 1 "Chess" monster or "Pawn Token" you control. If you do, it is not. (Damage calculation is applied normally.) Effect: This card's name is treated as "Chess - Rook". If "Marine Chess" is not on the field, this card is destroyed. This card is also treated as a Rock-Type monster. You can Special Summon this card from your Deck if you control a face-up "Marine Chess" monster. If there is a Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls in this card's column, this card gains 400 ATK, during damage calculation only. Once per turn, you can move this card into an unoccupied Monster Card Zone on your side of the field. Effect: This card's name is treated as "Chess - Pawn". If "Marine Chess" is not on the field, this card is destroyed. This card is also treated as a Spellcaster-Type monster. During each of your Standby Phases, put 1 Marine Counter on this card (Max. 5). If you Tribute this card to Tribute Summon a "Chess" monster, the Summoned monster gains ATK equal to the number of Marine Counters on this card x 150. Effect: Activate only while "Chess Board" is face-up on the field. After activation, this card is treated as a Continuous Spell Card and moved to an unoccupied Spell & Trap Card Zone on your side of the field. When a "Marine Chess" monster you control is attacked, you can switch it to face-up Defense Position.
Xiangqi]The Chinese counterpart of chess, their pieces have a more war-themed set-up. Effect: This card's name is treated as "Chess - Queen". If "Xiangqi" is not on the field, this card is destroyed. This card can only be Normal Summoned or Set by Tributing 2 "Chess" monsters you control. When this card is Summoned, destroy 2 face-down cards on the field. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, all Piercing Damage this card's controller takes is reduced to 0. During a turn in which you take Battle Damage, you can Special Summon 1 "Chess" monster whose ATK is equal to or less than the damage you took. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent, your opponent discards 2 Spell or Trap Cards from their hand. Effect: Activate only while "Chess Board" is face-up on the field. After activation, this card is treated as a Continuous Spell Card and moved to an unoccupied Spell & Trap Card Zone on your side of the field. If a "Xiangqi" monster you control would be destroyed by battle, you can discard 2 cards from the top of your Deck. If you do, it is not. (Damage calculation is applied normally.)
Shogi]Japanese chess, due to its unique evolution, it has many curious rules. Effect: This card's name is treated as "Chess - Queen". If "Shogi" is not on the field, this card is destroyed. This card can only be Normal Summoned or Set by Tributing 2 "Chess" monsters you control. When this card is Summoned, discard 1 card from your hand and destroy 2 monsters on the field. As long as this card remains face-up on the field, each time a "Chess" monster you control is destroyed, inflict damage to your opponent equal to half the destroyed monster's DEF. Twice per turn, if a monster your opponent targets a face-up "Chess - King" you control, you can switch the attack target to this card. During the End Phase of a turn you inflicted Battle Damage to your opponent, your opponent removes 1 card in their Graveyard from play.
