A rather hilarious "debate" between Intelligent Design and Evolution

I don't care if people believe in ID. As long as they don't put religion over facts. In which case I don't. I don't support it' date=' but as I explained to Senior Pudding, I don't deny that it could be proved fact indefinitely.[/b']

And how does creationism make any sense seeing that we share bone/muscle structure with many animals? That's a part of the belief. It's not meant to be a scientific study, that belief that is.

And that our DNA is pretty close to many animals? This is a scientific study. Not a belief. They're totally different.

Oh, and intelligent design seems like bullshit. Okay. Unlike these extremists, I'm not gonna pin you down and force you to ride the train of beliefs with me. It's your opinion, your choice, and ultimately your decision. So if it seems like bullshit, why do you bother arguing it on a public forum to bash everyone who does believe something different? Either ignore it and get a life, or target those who cross scientific "fact" with religion.

Giving humans an appendix is really smart, right God? It's all there for a reason. ;)

Doesn't do much, but you better hope it doesn't explode! From what I understand, the appendix holds a supply of germs for your body, or something like that. That's a lot of work. Or so said my Physics teacher. :/

By the way, he's a Christian.

Physics teacher talking about biology. Eww. D:

You'll need to get your appendix removed eventually, so it cannot serve too much of an important purpose. There are obviously other germ storage tanks.

Oh, and while proving ID =/= disproving evolution, why don't you start off with listing all the holes in the theory of evolution?

2. I'm confused. You believe that humans and other animals don't share many basic functions and structures?

5. What reason is that?

6. It's one of the proposed secondary functions, but it is by no means a huge job. Your gut functions just as well with it as without it, and, if you include the chance of being killed by it, then your body functions, on the whole, better without it.

don't have the faith to believe in evolution. You can send me all the links you want that claim, and ONLY claim that evolution is real and they won't do anything for me. In fact, I didn't waste my time reading over anything you sent.

God IS real. He does exist and regardless of what you believe, he still IS your God and you WILL bow to him one day. Your opinion doesn't count for anything. What you believe has no bearing on reality. The only reason you reject God is because you hate the idea of having to answer to him eventually so you and your little friends invented the concept of evolution to weasle your way out of believing in God and invented stories that support your claims and offer "proof" to make you feel better etc etc.

That sounds like something I would say if I was doing a religious troll of someone. :/

5.) We don't know yet. Our religion isn't fact, and we're still learning more about God and why he does what he does.

6.) I know, I was just making (or so I think) a valid point about the whole appendix thingy. :/

Oh and Dark, that's got to be the most hilarious religious extremist (troll) I've seen in a while. -_-

I swear to God (oh, the irony) that I was not trolling that innocent young man. fr srs

But that sounded like something I might have said if I was trolling someone. :/

Or maybe I misread your post. It's freaking midnight over here, and I'm trying to beat SMW.

Yeah, at first that made me think he was a troll too. But the account had numerous uploading religious videos. A bunch of things on Islam and its evils. etc. It could have just been a troll account, but it seemed like way too much effort to spend on a single troll attempt.

But I stuck that last line into my second response just in case. ^.^

That sounds like something I would say if I was doing a religious troll of someone. :/

Indeed, but it has a ring of truth in it, since it contains what is really an incredibly common misconception among Christian morons: that everyone really knows as soon as they hear about Jesus that Christianity Your Particular Branch of Christianity is the One True Faith, and that anyone who is not a Christian Real True Christian of your Real True Church knows they aren't following the One True Faith and is deliberately being dishonest because... well, we're not sure why, but they're definitely liars.

Without that assumption, their ideology largely falls apart. How could they handle the concept of a kind and loving God that sends people to Hell for eternal torture on the grounds that they didn't know that Christianity Real True Christianity is the One True Faith? Something in there just doesn't seem right. The solution is to assume that everyone already knows that Real True Christianity is, well, real and true, and so anyone who isn't a Real True Christian is deliberately insulting the God that they really secretly know is real and thus deserves their fate. This way, the "Real True Christians" and their religion of love can feel perfectly happy about condemning the rest of the world to eternal damnation.

In fact, it seems to go beyond that. Far from merely taking this absurd hypothesis as justification for sending everyone else to hell, many Real True Christians - such as the one who was quoted above - actually seem to revel in the mass suffering of the human race. Their position is one of "Neener-neener, you'll be sorry someday", and so they devote their lives to waiting for everyone to die so that the Great Cosmic Neener-Neener can commence. The atheists, the agnostics, the Jews, the Muslims, the Hindus, the Buddhists, the Christians who are part of the wrong branch of Christianity and thus are not Real True Christians? They - no, we - are to be tortured, and the Real True Christians find nothing but glee in this. It is no tragedy to them.

(This is particularly evident in much of popular Christian fiction. The best-selling Left Behind series is based entirely around God getting bored of waiting for everyone to die before he can torture them, so he first slaughters transports all the Real True Christians - defined as "people in the author's branch of Christianity that has a bizarre belief that the Bible is actually a coded foretelling of the president of Romania killing everyone" - so that He can then spend seven years torturing everyone else on Earth even before they die. The entire thing is based entirely around bringing the Great Cosmic Neener-Neener to this planet, because these monsters pious followers of the forgiving and loving God are so eager to see us condemned that they can't even wait for us to die.)

This is also why the vast majority of evangelical attempts, and depictions of evangelical attempts, are made with the assumption that the target of the conversion has never heard of Jesus and knows nothing about Christianity (Real True or otherwise) - after all, they've obviously never heard of Jesus, or they would either already be worshiping Him or be out robbing banks, depending on whether they decided to embrace an unambiguously-true religion or insult an omnipotent, vengeful loving being For The Evulz. (You may recall, for example, a topic on this very forum a few weeks ago that was trying to convert people by informing us that... Jesus removes sin.) Of course, to people who haven't spent their whole lives with their heads stuck up, uh, in the middle of a tight-knit community of Real True Christians, this looks absolutely ludicrous. "Oh, you mean you Christians think Jesus was God and died for our sins? My mistake, I thought you guys worshiped Zeus and thought he and his henchman Odin collaborated to divinely create pancakes. Now that you've cleared that up, I'll convert to Real True Christianity immediately!"

Finally, this also provides a nice internally-consistent loop of certainty for these Real True Christians. If they assume that everyone already knows whether God exists or not and the people who say He doesn't are just lying liars, then they can further extrapolate that anyone who sincerely believes something must be correct - that it is impossible to be sincerely wrong. Then, they can combine this with their own sincerity about their own beliefs to conclude that all their beliefs must be absolutely true. Naturally, to any onlooker, this is ludicrous circular reasoning, but to the Real True Christians, this just makes them even more certain than certain (somehow) that they'll be on the correct end of the Great Cosmic Neener-Neener.

Note that this does not apply to all Christians (In fact, some of my best friends are generic excuse et cetera et cetera). As I said, this is just a common misconception among Christian morons who have no grasp of human nature, questionable grasp of the teachings of their own faith - is the God they describe truly a kind, loving, forgiving being of pure good? - and absurd delusions regarding how the minds of every single human being on the planet work.

There is no set in stone evidence for the existence of a God' date=' or for Intelligent Design. On the other hand, there is DEFINITE evidence for evolution. Evolution is almost certainly correct, and even though there is a minimal chance it isn't, it is far more credible than Intelligent Design or the theory of a Divine Being governing our lives.

[/quote']

How is it more credible? As for the evidence that makes evolution so indisputable, let's review this shall we?

Evolutionists claim that evolution occurs because organisms need to adapt and survive therefore they must evolve or die. This makes sense as anyone can see that organisms do indeed adapt to their surroundings such as rabbits changing their fur color, cats and dogs shedding hair, etc. These are both indeed adaptions, but they DO NOT result in the organism changing its genetic makeup as these are ACQUIRED TRAITS which CANNOT be passed on. This rules out the argument that new species emerge through passing on adapted traits. Secondly, evolutionists state that evolution is made possible through genetic mutations. Genetic mutations do occur, and are responsible in altered traits observed in many organisms, including humans. Nevertheless, mutations DO NOT add new information, they only delete or scramble existing information. Moreover, mutations can either be good, bad or neutral. Most of the time they are neutral and even unnoticeable to the naked eye. If they aren't neutral, then they are most likely to be a debilitating mutation that results in an organism having two heads, extra limbs, etc. For example, only birds have the genetic capacity to grow feathers. No matter how many mutations a cat undergoes, it cannot and will not ever grow feathers. Similarly, a reptile cannot and will not ever grow fur. No matter how much they need to adapt and survive, they will always be cold-blooded with scales.

Well' date=' the evolution of whales is a pretty obscure fact. It isn't like Wikipedia is accessible to anyone with an Internet connection, anyway.

But corny jokes aside, even if there were no evidence of whales having stemmed from the same order that gave us giraffes and deer and sheep, why exactly should we jump from one insupportable thesis to another?

[/quote']

Your second statement's wording confuses me. What exactly are you saying?

In their point of view, advocates of intelligent design see evolution as being full of holes, unsupported. Suppose that it is. But what about ID - isn't it just the familiar "My mama's face is hidden behind two hands, therefore my mama's face has disappeared" routine lent with political weight? ID is on its face just as completely unsupported as the one they claim to disdain.

Since Pudding's still asleep, and I'm not, I'll point out what is not beyond my comprehension (fer now):

These are both indeed adaptions, but they DO NOT result in the organism changing its genetic makeup as these are ACQUIRED TRAITS which CANNOT be passed on.

But I thought Darwin recorded those finches in the Galapagos as adapting to fit to their needs over time by the concurrent evolution of the beaks (or so I think I understand).

And also, I've heard of this. This one benefits from this mutation.

You clearly understand nothing about the processes we're speaking of. This is what makes this religious fundamentalist sheet so stupid. You don't truly understand the process at work.

Adaptation occurs through allele variation. Different alleles lead to different traits: The color of an animal's fur, for example. I'm sure you learned how heredity works in Bio 101. Offspring with a more useful fur-coloration are MORE LIKELY to survive. Thus they reproduce and in turn are MORE LIKELY to produce offspring with their own fur color.

Of course, these alleles have to come from somewhere. Generally they come from genetic recombination and mutation (within a sex cell, of course. Other mutation are not heritable.).

It's not that hard. Variation is driven through a set of processes. Successful variation increases, not guarantees, the chances of greater success and reproduction. Likewise unsuccessful variation only increases the chance of less successful organisms. Evolution is all about the trends, not the specifics. Over an extensive period of time, less successful variations tend to fade away.

Futhermore, many IDers and Creationists tend to confuse the dispute over mutation's role in modern human variation and its role in evolution as a process. Mutation drives simpler organisms (bacteria, other once-celled organisms, and viruses though they aren't truly alive) at a stunning speed. These organism don't have anything to do with genetic recombination, etc. They do, of course, swap DNA in a separate process.

The point I'm making is this: evolution can't be pinned down on one single process. A few different factors account for it, but ultimately it just comes down to Natural Selection. It's not really a disputable phenomena. It's a bit like denying that your car turns on in the morning when you twist the key in the ignition.

By the way, birds are not the only animals with a capacity to grow feathers. In fact, the coding for it is in many species: humans included. There's just another piece of coding, or multiple, in there somewhere that turns it off, rendering it "junk DNA." A convenient mutation could, theoretically make other animals grow feathers. That being said, the coding is likely useless at this point BECAUSE with the gene turned off, natural selection could not eliminate harmful changes.

Stop getting all of your information about evolution from Pokemon.

:/

What about the breeding of IVs?

If I understand how IVs work correctly, that actually would simulate evolution fairly well if death were involved, albeit in the form of artificial selection rather than natural selection. Those with stronger IVs are bred and have offspring that share their strong IVs while those with weaker IVs die out without offspring, leaving future generations consisting only of those with strong IVs.

So basically' date=' I have no right whatsoever to believe in something that scientists deem illogical. I must instead abide by all that is within reason and wait on my death bed as I grow old. That about right?

You can believe whatever you bloody well like. Just keep your stupidities out of public schools.

Go ahead and believe what you want. Just don't try and prove it scientifically or try and disprove something solely on the basis of your beliefs. Oh, and thanks everyone for covering that post.
