We elected him because he promised to accomplish something.I'm just going to add to this that it's reasonable to hold considerably higher expectations for the president of the United States of America than you yourself could meet. He's the president. He's supposed to be the best of the best. Complaining that somebody should just go run himself, then proceeding to flame him, is unbelievably stupid and ignorant, regardless of where you find yourself falling on the political spectrum. (I actually think Obama's a pretty good president. He hasn't done all that much, but frankly he's been blocked at every turn by the Republicans in congress.) Which would be totally surprising!Nah, McCain had a different stance on the bailout (direct to homeowners) that probably would have been less successful, and he also has a different stance on the Health Care plan. Frankly, these are the only two major issues we've been dealing with since Obama was elected, so I think that to say they're the same is rather inaccurate. However, they're certainly at least relatively similar, since they're both rather centrist.

Representative Democracy - People elect a representative to voice their opinion. Direct Democracy - People Govern themselves. Anarchy - No government. Then you've got the other split-ups of government:Federalized - Strong central government split up into states with weaker governments. Confederation - Weak central government with strong state governments. And then there's:Capitalism - Free marketCommunism - No private ownership. Socialism - Sort of like a mixture of the two The US Would be a federalized capitalistic representative democracy. (There are plenty of other forms of government, I just named a few that are popular.)
The Dark One
The United States is certainly not capitalist in the sense that you're portraying. Laissaz Faire jus don't work. Take a gander at the Gilded Age for why. We have numerous economic regulations, and for good reason. Eg. Anti-trust laws. The important point that distinguishes the USA from classically "Socialist" countries is that the US government, in most industries, does not control the means of production. In a Socialist country, the majority of businesses are still privately owned, but at least in certain industries, the government plays a role. Eg. Venezuala and oil. Most countries in Europe and health care. America's own postal system (an exception to the rule), etc.

Regardless of whether or not we actually are capitalist, I'm going with what the textbook definition of America is. ~Shore
OK' date=' srs bsns tiems. Josh made a point, a good one- the majority of politicians do the same things in their speeches, campaigns, etc. that Barack Obama does. You could just as easily have titled this thread "how to be a politician" as "how to be Obama". That is a completely logical point, therefor making it personal to Josh was a colossal dick move. Everyone has problems, not just him. Therefor it's completely irrelevant. As for Bush, we have to regard the amount of seriousness in my comment. Obviously you can't get into a really good college without a high school diploma. Does that make Bush a smart person? No it does not. He was a C student. He was mediocre, since he was dealing with high standards. A mediocre student means a poor president. However, by my comment, I simply wanted to take a shot at one of the worst presidents in our history instead of attacking a decidedly mediocre president who so far has done little to deserve either the praise or fury with which his presidency has been met.[/quote'] .Fireworks. You're argument is the tornado that is unsuccessfully trying to dismantle my pride. I will NOT allow this breeze to rip apart my integrity. I will protect the ideology of poverty stricken children across America! You say, "All politicians are corrupt." This statement is a black plague killing the hopes and dreams of American citizens everywhere. I think I speak for everyone when I say I am sick and tired of the populous that seems to doubt the American people.:]

Willieh
Lol... Then please elaborate a little on why it shouldn't be changed to "How to be a Politician"? Guest JoshIcy
Yet it perfectly applies to every politician. Saying "How to be Obama" specifically targets him in this case. OBAMA WAS DELIVERING A SPEECH WHILE I WAS MAKING THIS THREAD. OBAMA IS OUR PRESIDENT. I WAS TALKING ABOUT OBAMA, NOT EVERY POLITICIAN. OBAMA IS OUR PRESIDENT. OBAMA WAS DELIVERING A SPEECH WHILE I WAS MAKING THIS THREAD. ^ Read that about 200 times. Then read it another 500 times. Then, if you still don't get it, calmly sit down and squeeze a stress ball.
