It was about 2,5 hours of work. I think there should be some easier way to do this on GIMP and looks better. I hand drew it, put some rough colors on it, scanned it and fixed the colors via gimp.

Aside from the original drawing needing some work, You can shade by using the fuzzy brush on another layer, and fade the layer.

 

EDIT: By shape, he means the overall design of the pic itself.

Okay, to put it simply, the body has a basic shape, you made it a straight line more or less, peoples arms are looser in general and not tightly held together, if a male the chest is slightly more square on and the waist down depends on how you want them to look, basic perspective with body shape bud. ;D

So do it on more than 1 layer. Not just do it all on 1 layer. Got it.

 

As for the shape, the original drawing looked alright. Which is why I didn't really like how it turned out...

Well first before even painting it you'll have to figure out how to sketch it. You'll have to study the shape of the person first. Maybe try to use figure drawing. After that, paint it and then add the details in the end.
