Does hate make a crime worse?

Well from a legal standpoint I don't suppose it matters. A punishment for robbery/any other crime won't be increased simply because the offender hated the person he/she hurt. Now morally I would think the crimes are worse. If asked which they dislike more, someone who robbed a house or someone who robbed a house because they hated the person who lived there, I'd think most people would dislike the latter more.

The biggest issue with crimes involving hate is that they get unusually violent very fast. So often crimes involving hatred are often worse than normal as the criminal is usually more brutal.

So, to sum up my opinion, you won't get punished more for hating but society looks down on it more.

Hate, or any strong emotion, is going to result in stronger actions. Crimes that result from hate are going to be more impromptu and probably more violent.

So I believe it does make it worse, although you won't be punished more, unless you cross the line somewhere (ie, from battery to murder)

our thought are irrelevant to our actions.

lolwut.

That made no sense D:

I think I will kill you. I never meet you. I never killed you. See?

Just because we don't act on our every thought does not make our thoughts irrelevant to our actions.

So, firstly, your example is irrelevant. If I punch you and give you a black eye, it's irrelevant if I hated you. And on that latest comment, the fact that I hate you doesn't necessarily mean anything, therefore it is irrelevant in a court of law. Only proofs are excepted in the eyes of the law.

The question isn't whether it's worse in the court of law, its whether hate makes the actual act worse. I'm saying that hate tends to make the action much more violent, which is typically worse.

But think about it. Which one would you hate more?

1. A guy who killed a man because he hates him.

2. A guy who killed a man for no reason.

Bad example. A more realistic one would be a man who kills for money and a man who kills out of hate.

The one who does it out of hate will leave a much bloodier scene, I promise you.

I wouldn't hate either one more than the other. Murder is a crime' date=' and they committed a crime. The motivation in this case is irrelevant, because it's obvious in both cases that the intent was to harm the victim.

A hired assassin will preform the act as quickly and effectively as possible. A man with a grudge will draw it out as long as possible, inflicting as much pain as possible. Both end in the same result, but I would say one is worse than the other.

Watch Law Abiding Citizen. Because it's relevant and also because Gerald Butler is damn sexy with his shirt off.

Not sure what you mean by worse.

Still, my opinion is that no, not necessarily.

I can murder that guy because I hate him for banging my gf in secret; I go in, kill the guy and be done with it.

Or I can kill that guy because I'm bored and it looks cool in those video games where they shoot a leg first, than the other, then an arm, then the other, then torture the guy a bit and then kill him.

Hatred, from that perspective, doesn't make a crime worse.

Of course, hatred can lead to some heinous crimes, much worse than any other motivation - so it all depends on the context, really. I can hate one man and want him dead, or I can hate a political group in general and kill them all during a debate... It's variable, and it frequently involves varying degrees of sanity.
