bhim's Guide to Making Good Cards

You never fully explained the ways of the traps and the ways of spells mostly the monsters. Like how Spells need to have a good effect but if it is to good it should have a cost like so many great cards before it, like take tribute to the doomed (discard 1 card to destroy one monster on your opponents side of the field) also the thing that gets me really mad is when the card is good and the picture looks like crap like you can see the pixels not going together. Sorry if you can't exactly get this. hard to explain i guess.

I agree with HMNISGwahahaha, (although im not to in on the name, but I digress), Normal Monsters are an important part of the game. Noobs probably shouldn't handle them because they normally do what you where talking about and just plop down a name and points and call it a card, but if they put in a good flavor text and its used for combos and stuff it can be just as good as those syncing effect monster. Need I remind you of the Dark Magician. Duel monsters classic and part of plenty of combos, even though hes a normal monster. Its not easy to make a good normal monster, and if all your doing is creating for "maximum efficiency" then yeah, there a waist. But don't gut the whole, just say its grounds noobs should not walk because its a though job and its easy to mess up with it, don't slap a taboo label on it.

why, is someone scouting for real cards. the point of making cards is to have fun with it, although its important to keep to a standard, and your guide dose a great job at teaching that standard to the noobs who might not know it.

but with all due respect, your wrong. I know plenty of people who use Dark Magician, hes a classic and an important part of the game. There are lots of great combos with him and plenty of exclusive combo cards like Dark Magic Attack and Dark Eradicator Warlock, plus lots of exclusive ways to be special summoned like Sages stone and Dark Magic Curtain.

I agree that if the point of the card maker was only to make efficient cards that people would kill to actually get in there decks then normal monsters would be nothing more then a casualty, but seeing as I don't think theres any chance of most of these cards being made real, whats wrong with a few cool normal monsters that look great and have good flavor text and can still be comboed with other cards.

I mean, with your bread of effect monster maniacs it would be easy to skill drain you then use some normal card exclusive cards that only works if your a normal monster like sword of the soul eater or dark factory of mass production. Its still possible to make great normal monsters, just not easy, so I can understand if some people would like to shy away from it or declare it bad to do. But its still possible and its still good if done right.

((sorry if I inadvertently insulted you in any way during my reply, I don't mean to make anyone upset or insulted))

Well personally I don't really keep track of that kind of thing. And Dark Magician Decks where pretty popular after they released the spellcaster deck, until they band Tsukuyomi anyway. But I digress. Even if your right about dark magician decks not being tournament top, it doesn't help your case at all. Its irrelevant. Because efficacy isn't the only point of making cards, so its ok to make a few that don't revolutionize dueling as we know it, so even if there not the best that doesn't mean they shouldn't be used

the thing about normal monsters is really harsh... but i understand, maybe just to use them as "set" fillers if you are making a set of more than 20 cards, then id see them as appropriate......

but overall nice guide... 9.99~/10 .... -.00~1 for being a tad harsh xD

Kazerak: But now you're missing the point. The point of this thread IS to make [as you say] revolutionary cards. If you want to make a normal monster, I'm not stopping you... I'm just trying to put you on the right track to greatness. There is always a different path. Your choice which to take.

icyblue: Even then I don't much see it as appropriate...

My Advent of the Cosmos set... I will try and make it the BEST set this site has ever seen. And ideally, there will not be a single normal monster in that set. Each effect will be as unique as I can possibly think. I just hope I can figure out how to make a damn spell/trap card... =/

Yankee: xD Thanks

I can respect what your trying to do, I just disagree. I think you can make great decks, even with normal monsters, and some decks, designed around normal monsters. But then, what is dueling if not different approaches to the same goal.

As for the spell and trap cards, if your having problems with them take your own advice and check out other peoples cards to see how its done

no prob, its your advice after all XD

yeah it is. And most people are stuck strong to there opinions to the point where people who don't share them become enemies, and thats a little sad. But then, its differences that make people who they are.

My favorite arguments are when both sides present logical in intellectual defense for there opinions and even though a agreement may not be reached they can both agree that the other made a good points, even if they didn't manage to change the others mind. Those are few and far between but I feel like I just had one now, so thanks for that ^^

I'm new at this card making thing but I've been playing the yugioh card game for a couple years(I'm 16 now)

Could you give me a logical reason why normal monsters are useless.

It's not that I completely disagree with you it's just that I always include a couple in my deck that can make up for not having an effect with high Atk (1900).

And what about magic and trap cards that have great effects that can only be used while a certain normal monster is present or other trap cards that focus on destroying effect monsters and not normal monsters(justi-break)

further more what about card fillers... and by fillers i mean normal monsters that are available for guys who can't get rare cards because they can't just keep buying cards. I had to think of a creative way to use them before I didn't have to think because of effect monsters who's effects welded so well together that you'd have to be stupid not to put two and two together y'know.Thats how i started out until I could trade for rare cards at hobby leagues and such.

Anyway I don't completely disagree with you it's just that I want more of a reason to not include them in my own deck that has worked well for me in the past. I really think you hit it on the nail with your other advice. I just desperately need to know why.
