[Max Darkness] A Darkness Thought Banished

Max Darkness

Recommended Posts
Information]

This is based on a duel between myself (Mirage) and Sweet Lightning (Hikaru) that happened a short while ago. So that's all it is really. I just thought some of the plays we pulled off would sound quite good when written down. (Plus I had a free evening where I was doing nothing else...and I wanted a break from writing sensationalist duels where every card you need is found in your starting hand.)

Time-wise, this is set a while after 5D's, where the five Signers are nothing special, having no threat to counter. Linking to my "Emissaries" fan-fic; one of the Envoys of Darkness has survived to that time and challenges the user of Black Rose Dragon to a duel, continuing the eternal battle between light and darkness.

'Hikaru' means 'Radiance' or 'Shining' in Japanese, while a Mirage is an illusion. Both are derived from our usernames. Lightning shines, while Darkness can create illusions in its gloom.

It's split into 4 parts simply so you don't have to read a collosal block of text all at once. Rate, hate, think I'm wasting my and your time, but enjoy!

‘Genesis Plaza, midnight.’ The simple note had appeared in Hikaru’s letterbox that morning and he hadn’t been able get his mind off it for the whole day. Undoubtedly though, it revolved around the fact he was a Signer, the servant of the Black Rose Dragon. Generations ago, the powers of the Signers had clashed with their antitheses the Dark Signers and the very king of the Underworld.

Now though, their power was rarely called upon, and Hikaru could not remember the last time his birthmark had flared in response to a threat. Thus, getting this letter was a cause of concern, since the person who had sent it clearly knew where he lived and knew of his true nature. As such, Hikaru made sure he went to the meeting place at the right time.

That night, he walked into the dark square, looking for the person who had summoned him. Out of his sight, atop one of the surrounding buildings, veiled in darkness, a lone cloaked figure watched, smiling slightly. As Hikaru looked around in the gloom, a dark aura formed behind him and the mysterious person appeared.

Automatically, Hikaru’s mark of the dragon lit up, causing pain to surge through his arm. He knew this meant the stranger was a greater danger than anything he had come across before.

“Welcome Signer.” The shadowy man started.

“Who are you?” Hikaru asked.

“I guess you could consider me the darkness to your light.” He replied.

“A Dark Signer?!” Hikaru gasped. The figure laughed.

“Nothing so modern. I am an envoy. The Envoy of Illusions You can call me Mirage.”

“An envoy?” Hikaru questioned.

“Long before the Signers rose, the radiance and shadows clashed again. The envoys of light and darkness fought and all were thought lost. Except for me. The power of the night has kept me alive for this moment.” Mirage explained.

“This moment...?” Hikaru’s mind was racing, trying to understand what he was hearing.

“The time when the Signers are weak, and do not exploit their powers.”

“What?”

“The Signers have abilities on par with their counterparts the Dark Signers. They can give life and can take it away. They can render something harmless or turn it into a deadly weapon. You just haven’t realised that yet.”

“Okay. What do you want?” Hikaru demanded, attempting to cut to the chase.

“What do I want? That’s simple...to continue the eternal battle between the light and darkness. Which shall continue now!” As he spoke, a dark purple light enveloped the area, sealing the two duelists within. “Shall we?” He asked, his voice gaining a touch of sadism.

The pair took their places opposite each other and began the duel.
2.]

Turn 1

“I’ll go first!” Declared Hikaru. “Draw!”

“I activate Foolish Burial. It sends one monster from my Deck to the Graveyard. And I choose Oracle of the Sun. I end my turn. Now let’s see the power of an Envoy of Darkness!”

“Very well, draw. I activate the effect of the D.D. Crow in my hand. By discarding it to the Graveyard, I can remove 1 monster in your Graveyard from play. And of course, I choose your Oracle of the Sun!”

The monster was seen briefly, in a ghostly form, as Hikaru’s monster vanished from his Graveyard. Hikaru groaned as a potential strategy was destroyed.

“Now, I summon my D.D. Assailant. It attacks you directly, Signer!” (Hikaru LP: 8000 → 6300)

“I activate the effect of Tragoedia! When I take Battle Damage, I can Special Summon it from my hand.” The demonic creature rose from a dark vortex and roared at Mirage.

“How irritating...I end my turn.” Hikaru laughed as he gained a small advantage.

Turn 2

“I draw.” Hikaru let a small smile creep onto his face at his drawn card. “I summon my Red Ant Azcatl! Then, I activate Mind Control, taking your D.D. Assailant from you!” Mirage’s monster was covered in a dark green glow before being pulled to Hikaru’s side of the field. “Now, I tune my Red Ant Azcatl with your D.D Assailant!”

Ancient being of light and life. Come forth to despatch the ones who would stand in your way. Synchro Summon! Black Rose Dragon!

Hikaru’s mark flared violently as the black and red dragon descended onto the field. “Now prepare to feel the power of a Signer! Tragoedia and Black Rose Dragon, direct attacks!” The two beasts roared as they launched their fury at the envoy. Mirage was engulfed by the black-purple blast wave, screaming as the attacks became real; the Signer’s desire for victory empowering them. (Mirage LP: 8000 → 3800) “I end my turn.”

The smoke and energy cleared, and Mirage simply looked back up, his eyes now swirling with a deep indigo. “That power is nothing. Not compared to the true envoys.” He said with contempt.

“I draw. I’ll activate Soul Release, removing from play all the cards in our Graveyards. Next, I activate Different Dimension Reincarnation. I resurrect my D.D. Assailant by discarding one card from my hand. Now, my normal summon for this turn. Come forth, Breaker the Magical Warrior!”

“Breaker’s effect activates! When it is Summoned, I can put 1 Spell Counter on it.” One of the spheres covering Breaker the Magical Warrior’s armour lit up, glowing in the darkness. “Also, with every Spell Counter, Breaker gains 300 ATK, taking it up to 1900!”

Hikaru looked down at his hand. With three cards, Tragoedia’s ATK was 1800, not enough for it survive an attack from Breaker. However, he was confused as to why his opponent had brought back his first monster, since its strength couldn’t scratch Black Rose Dragon.

“Battle! Breaker the Magical Warrior attacks Tragoedia!” The knight’s sword glowed and unleashed a shockwave of blue energy that tore through Hikaru’s monster (Hikaru LP: 6300 → 6200). Secondly, D.D. Assailant attacks Black Rose Dragon!” The warrior leapt towards the dragon, which effortlessly defended itself with a flurry of deadly rose petals from its wings, slicing Mirage’s monster into pieces. (Mirage LP: 3800 → 3100)

“And now that D.D. Assailant has been destroyed, its effect activates. I can choose to remove from play both it and the monster that destroyed it. In this case...your Black Rose Dragon!”

“No!” Shouted Hikaru, as his dragon was taken into the alternate dimension.

“I end my turn.”
3.]

Turn 3

“My turn.” Growled Hikaru, drawing. “I Set a monster face-down and then lay two cards face-down. I end.”

“Giving Breaker a choice of which cards to destroy? How entertaining of you.” Taunted Mirage as he drew his card. “First, I’ll activate the Continuous Spell Card Dimension Fissure. As long as this card remains face-up, all the monsters that would be sent to the Graveyard are instead removed from play. I then switch Breaker the Magical Warrior to Defence Position and Set a monster.”

“Now, I remove the Spell Counter on Breaker to activate its effect. I destroy the card in Zone 2!” The knight once again raised its glowing sword, slicing through the card, revealing it to be Heavy Storm. “That could have given you quite a hand. But alas; I’ll end there.”

Turn 4

“I draw. And then I flip my Morphing Jar face-up, activating it.” Started Hikaru. “We both discard our hands and then draw five cards.”

“Since my hand is empty, I only gain from your effect.” Hikaru groaned as he discarded the two remaining cards from his hand and drew his five. “Now, I discard 1 card from my hand in order to Special Summon The Tricky from my hand. Also, I’ll normal summon a second Red Ant Azcatl, tuning it with my The Tricky!”

Arcane solar being, bring your glorious light upon this battle. May you illuminate the darkness! Synchro Summon, Sun Dragon Inti!

The luminous dragon descended from the sky and bathed the battlefield in a golden light, causing Mirage to shield his eyes from the glare.

“I lay one card face-down. Now, Sun Dragon Inti, destroy Breaker the Magical Warrior!” The Incan beast’s light grew in intensity, swallowing Breaker in the process. When the light faded, the knight was gone.

“Due to the effect of Dimensional Fissure, Breaker was removed from the game instead of being sent to the Graveyard.” Mirage mentioned.

“I end my turn.”

“Draw!” Mirage looked up the shining dragon and glared. A very symbol of the light he was destined to vanquish. “I Set a monster and lay two cards face-down. That’s all.”

Turn 5

Hikaru laughed at his opponent’s inability to stand in the way of his dragon. “I draw. And I summon Sangan to the field.” The small furry fiend appeared and growled. “Now, Sangan, destroy his face-down monster on the right.” The beast lunged forward, baring its fangs.

“Bad luck. My face-down monster was Destiny Hero-Defender, with a defence power of 2700, easily surpassing Sangan’s 1000 ATK. So of course, you lose 1700 Life Points.” (Hikaru LP: 6200 → 4500)

“I still have Sun Dragon Inti. Attack his second face-down monster!”

“In that case, I activate Dimensional Prison. When a monster my opponent controls declares an attack, this removes the attacking monster from the game!”

“What?!” Hikaru shouted as Inti too was swallowed by a dimensional rift, dragging it into the parallel realm. “I en-“

“Before you do that, Hikaru; I’ll activate this.” Mirage interrupted, revealing a face-down card, a Continuous Trap. “Now, you may continue.”

“I end my turn.” Hikaru finished.

“Very well, draw!” Since it’s now my Standby Phase, I’ll activate the trap I just flipped face-up. It’s called Graverobber’s Retribution and it inflicts 100 damage for each removed from play monster you have. At the moment, you have eight and so you take 800 damage!” (Hikaru LP: 4500 → 3700)

“I’ll set another monster and another card and end my turn.” Mirage stated flatly.
4.]

Turn 6

“My turn! And since your Destiny Hero-Defender is now face-up, I get to draw a second card. I tribute my Morphing Jar to summon my Oracle of the Sun.”

“Battle Phase! Sangan attacks your face-down monster on the right.” As Hikaru declared his attack, Mirage smiled.

“Very well! My face-down monster was Needle Worm! And when it’s flipped face-up, you have to discard the top five cards of your Deck.” Hikaru angrily picked up the top five cards and looked at them. When he did, his heart sank.

“This isn’t possible...” He muttered. “Both Imperial Iron Walls?”

“Well, that is unlucky...” Mirage mocked, the sarcasm coming through his voice clearly.

“I switch Oracle of the Sun to Defence Position and end my turn.”

“The only card that could have saved you, and now it’s gone. Hah! I draw. And now in my Standby Phase, I activate Graverobber’s Retribution once again, this time causing 900 points of damage!” (Hikaru LP: 3700 → 2800) “I place one card face-down and end my turn.”

Turn 7

“Draw! And now due to Defender, I draw again. I switch Sangan to Defence Position and place one card face-down, ending my turn.”

“Are you that limited?” Asked Mirage, drawing his card. “Intreging. I activate Graverobber’s Retribution, again dealing 900 damage. (Hikaru LP: 2800 → 1900) I lay a card face-down and end.”

Turn 8

“My turn! I draw and then draw again!”

“I activate my face-down Trap Card, Karma Cut. This removes from play one face-up monster my opponent controls, at the cost of one card from my hand. So I discard the Dimensional Fissure in my hand to remove your Sangan.” A distorted hole in time and space formed under the small creature, sucking it in.

“I activate Call of the Haunted, reviving my Tragoedia!”

“Not so! I counter with my Horn of Heaven. By tributing a monster I control, I can negate your Special Summon and destroy both the monster and the card! So, be gone Destiny Hero-Defender!” The rock-clad warrior was absorbed into the alternate dimension, and as it was, Tragoedia too was wrenched from the battlefield into the dimensional fissure.

“I...I place one card face-down and end my turn.” Hikaru could feel the tension in his body building as his options became fewer. Looking up at his opponent, he could see Mirage was enjoying this, and sensing victory. Those facts made the ancient power in him grow, increasing his anger at the envoy.

“My turn...it’s almost over Signer. In my Standby Phase, Graverobber’s Retribution inflicts 1100 damage to you. (Hikaru LP: 1900 → 800) I set a card and end.”

Turn 9

“I draw!” Hikaru glanced at the drawn card and his eyes widened. This card was possibly the key to winning the duel. “I summon my final Red Ant Azcatl. Now I tune it with my Oracle of the Sun!”

Psychic being, lord of supernatural insight. Use your powers to vanquish the shadows. Synchro Summon! Thought Ruler Archfiend!

“With this, I can change the outcome of this duel!” Hikaru shouted. “Whenever my Thought Ruler Archfiend destroys a monster by battle, I gain Life Points equal to its attack power. Your burn effect will not be able to stop me! Now, Thought Ruler, attack his face-down monster.”

“I’m afraid this is the end.” Mirage flatly stated. “I activate my Trap Card Dimensional Prison, dooming your Thought Ruler to the same fate as your Sun Dragon. Of course, Thought Ruler can negate the effect of a card that targets a Psychic-Type monster and destroy it, but for the cost of 1000 Life Points. Life Points you don’t have!”

Hikaru watched as his monster was transported into the different dimension and he knew it was over.

“My final draw. Graverobber’s Retribution deals 1400 damage to you, ending this duel!” (Hikaru LP: 800 → 0)

Hikaru’s strength left him and he fell to his knees. Around him, the purple light grew stronger, and he saw Mirage advancing towards him.

“Now Signer, you will experience the darkness inside your heart.” Mirage said coldly, with no emotion. The Envoy of Darkness raised his hand, it too shining with the same ominous light. As he placed it on Hikaru’s forehead, the Signer blacked out and fell into a shadow-filled void.

The next morning, police were called to the Genesis Plaza to find a young man in a comatose condition, with little or no evidence to explain what had happened. Mirage watched the scene atop one of the buildings, the Black Rose Dragon card in his hand slowly swaying in the slight breeze.

“Until I am defeated Signer, you shall remain thus. The battle between light and darkness is timeless. It cannot be stopped. I must extinguish the rest of the light.” Turning, he said quietly, “Farewell.”
