These Jellyfish just can't die from old age from what I'm hearing from this article' date=' they can still be killed.

Yeah, pretty much.

But if we had those genes in our body, the only thing we'd have to worry about is death by fire, drowning, getting stabbed, dying of cancer, blood loss, hypothermia... [insert a few hundred deadly diseases and other causes of death here]...head injury and heart damage.

But other than that, we are totally immortal.

Temporal immortality sounds good to me.

Avoidance of a physical death wouldn't be all too difficult, assuming you know how to properly take care of yourself and avoid obvious risks.

Of course, there's still freak accidents and random murders, but that can't be helped.

what if: It was like the Movie/Show "Highlander" and the only way we can die is by getting our head chopped off by another immortal and then taking their power and knowledge

What are you on? They should ban that drug.

If that happened, it'd be happening now and no one would be any wiser. So yeah... Fail "What if".

As for this... If it were true, we'd have age limits etc >_<"

This is exciting and all since it's been discovered in nature, but stem cells have been known about for a long time. In fact, researchers today already regularly reverse the differentiation process of various stem cells within the human body in order to get totipotent stem cells without having to jump through all the hoops with the religious sects.

There's a project going on that plans not only to make humans immortal, but remove the human capacity to feel suffering. It's an interesting concept.

Right now, aside from the limited understanding we have over the human genome, the main setback is the maintenance of the telomeres on the chromosomes. There's an enzyme, called telomerase, that maintains the telomeres, and some theories have been proposed about extending them, but apparently there's some evidence that this would increase the risks of cancer.
