I dunno if anyone has heard this, but this is a good tip (for Photoshop).

 

1.) New Layer

2.) Image -> Apply Image

3.) Filter -> Other -> High Pass (10)

4.) Overlay

Please, for lighting, consider artistic and technical merit more than just a quick and easy fix.

 

Radial gradients, and high pass are terrible to create proper lighting.

 

First, look at the render/stock and see where the light is hitting the focal. Decide where the lighting will be in the perspective of the focal (behind, in front, etc.) Then use a soft brush and brush at the source. Lower the opacity to liking.

 

Apply image and use the dodge tool to accent the lighter in which the light hits the render spots and burn tool for shadows.

 

Burning the borders of tags also adds to some extent, depth.

thats the easiest way, and also the way i used to do things, but once you get better in gimp, you can do more with lighting, flow, depth all that shiz, the only bad thing is learning PS is like learning a whole other language.
