LOCK - Writing something else

This fiction is by the son of an English Teacher. So if you come up with a smarmy remark about syntax, line-breaks or accidental Capitalization Mistakes (that was on purpose) I will easily be able to prove you wrong and potentially humiliate you. So watch it. xD

Oh, and if you spot a reference to a great literary work (e.g. 1984, Animal Farm, any of Karl Marx's books) you get an honorary cookie. :D

[spoiler=Chapter 1 - Tryouts]

Alexis walked down the street as the clock struck thirteen (13:00, that is). It was one apres-midi and he was already puffed out from jogging 6km to the South Saxony Academia. He was a somewhat weak long-distance runner but he thought it had more to do with his four-year-old sister - quite a bossy little girl - waking up and demanding a bowl of Cornflakes at two in the morning earlier that day. He fell over with exhaustion causing him to crawl the last five yards as he reached the Automatic Doors of the Academia Lobby.

"Four legs good, two legs bad!" he smirked, remembering the line from the book his mother always read to him as a child.

He returned to his feet and looked up, staring dumbstruck at the bustling crowd before him.

The Academy's wonderful design never failed to amaze him with it's warm feel and mock-Victorian architecture. His mum (a fan of Period Homes! magazine) would probably start taking measurements in a vain attempt to make their home look even more like a 19th Century Estate.

"Hello and Welcome to the Academia Tryouts!" said a friendly looking female attendant with a slight american accent. She smiled jovially at him making him feel strangely embarrassed.

"Your number is Fifty-Three and you will be dueling one of our top Raviel Blue students!" she grinned showing perfect white teeth.

"Thanks." Alexis smiled warmly back.

"Walk down that corridor in front of you. The dueling hall will be in the second room on the right. Good Luck!" she grinned again.

The corridor she had directed him to was packed full of laughing auditionees and in contrast, serious looking Raviel Blue prefects who were annoyed that they were made to keep order in the corridors rather than duel the new recruits. He nudged the least angry looking one and smiled awkwardly at him.

"Excuse me, I'm looking for...Maximilian Pryce?" he read out the name on the ticket he was given.

"Sure, he's in the room next to me. You look like a fine young duelist to me. Good Luck!" the stocky prefect smiled warmly back.

The aforementioned room was a proper dueling space, complete with holograms, duel disks and even a stand filled with parents cheering their children on. He sat in the stands waiting for his name to be called out on the intercom.

"Auditionee number Fifty-Three - Alexis Golding." a robotic voice boomed out of the intercom. He got up and walked down the stairs to the dueling field as the crowd surprisingly applauded him.

"Ah, another one." a smug looking boy said. "Let's duel!"

[spoiler=Chapter 2 - lolBrionac]

Alexis picked up the duel disk on the platform next to him and adjusted the arm straps. It made a 'click' sound and the LCD screen flickered into life, showing his LP count.

"Hmm. Full 8000. This match could take a while." Alexis muttered.

"I think you'll find it won't." said Max, smugly. Alexis studied his face. He was tall, had ragged black hair and quite handsome. His skin was quite taut around his jawbone, which made him look like an army recruit. An army recruit that had just cornered someone in a training exercise and was grinning smugly as he prepared to shoot them in the chest with a paintball.

"Are you really sure about-THAT?!" Alexis jumped with surprise as the little platform he was standing on started to rise until it was about six feet off the ground. The crowd cheered and some over-enthusiastic parents whooped.

"Yeah. This is an exam. So we need good quality equipment." Max said, bored.

Alexis was both in shock and in awe. He had only seen such good quality equipment on TV and was amazed that he was too, using advanced equipment, just like those champions on the box.

"I think we'll start now." Max mumbled purposefully so only Max could hear. "I'm required to give you a clue about my deck and then give you a minute to make some last minute changes to help you in the match."

Max turned to the crowd.

"Not that it would do him any good!" he said to the crowd.

Several of his mates whooped and cheered while the parents booed. It was like a pantomime.

"Right, MAHBOI!" jeered Max, making an internet reference. "I run a WATER-based deck that features a lot of Brionac support. I call it Briopike Turbo. Your minute starts now."

Alexis fumbled around inside rucksack until he pulled out a box. He sat cross-legged on the floor and frantically added and removed cards from his deck.

"TEN SECONDS!" shouted Max.

"Should I?" he asked himself as he took out a Synchro from his box. "I will."

"Your time is up." Max said decisively. "I feel like crushing someone. Don't think this duel be easy."

Both players slotted their decks into their duel disks and drew five cards.

"As the examiner, I will start." Max said seriously.

"I summon Kaiser Sea Horse in attack mode." Max boomed. "I then remove my Kaiser from play to summon Pikeman of Daedalus!"

[spoiler=Pikeman of Daedalus]

185885p.jpg

You can remove from play 1 Sea Serpent-Type monster on the field to Special Summon this card from your hand or Deck. There can only be 1 face-up 'Pikeman of Daedalus' on the field. Once per turn you can send this card from the field to the Graveyard to Special Summon 1 WATER Synchro monster from your Extra Deck during the End Phase. If this effect is activated, pay Life Points equal to the combined Levels of this card and the summoned monster x200.

"I activate Pikeman's effect to send him to the Graveyard and call forth, Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier!" Max shrieked triumphantly. "I then pay Life Points equal to the combined levels of Pikeman and Brionac, that's 2400 gone."

(Max's LP: 5600)

"It's your turn." Max smiled smugly.

Alexis was shocked and mortified. Max's playing was so smooth and so fast it was unbelievable. He had got out his trump card, Brionac in the first turn of the duel and that meant that Max would just bounce back everything he played. He was screwed from the start. It was a shame, because he'd drawn a good hand.

"I activate Foolish Burial to send one monster from my deck to the Graveyard." Alexis said sadly. "Then I summon Rescue Cat."

A hologram of a cute white and grey striped cat appeared on the field. It was wearing a yellow helmet.

"Then I activate it's effect by sending it to the Graveyard. I summon X-Saber Airbellum and Outstanding Dog Marron!" Alexis said with a bit more enthusiasm.

A cute puppy and a vicious looking wolverine appeared on the field, standing above their cards.

"I skip my Battle Phase and go straight to the End Phase, destroying my Airbellum and Marron. But now I pay 1000 Life Points to summon Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest!"

A vicious looking ape holding a club appeared on the field.

(Alexis' LP: 7000)

"Now it's your turn." Alexis smiled sadly.

"You're a good duelist." said Max. "Quite a specimen. You deserve a place in this academy." he stroked his stubbly chin and furrowed his brow before his face suddenly broke into an expression of surprise.

"I wanted to see you play, that's why I didn't activate my Brionac's effect." Max said solemnly.

Alexis realized that all Max was doing was watching him try and salvage a chance from nothing. He was in the palm of Max's hand, he could be crushed whenever he wished.

"My turn." Max said.

"The crushing begins." Alexis remarked.

"I activate the effect of Pijlstaartrog, Manta of the Ice Barrier, and add him to my hand." said Max.

Current field:

Alexis (LP 7000): Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest

Max (LP 5600): Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

[spoiler=Pijlstaartrog, Manta of the Ice Barrier]

185885r.jpg

If there is a face-up 'Ice Barrier' monster on the field, you can add this card to your hand. This card can only be used for the Synchro Summon of a Sea Serpent-Type monster. When this card is removed from the field it is removed from play.

Max paused briefly and stroked his chin.

"Now I summon Pijl in attack mode." he said.

A Manta ray suddenly appeared on the field, gently hovering above a hologram of a card.

"Then I discard a card from my hand to return your Green Baboon to your hand." Max said. "Now Brionac, attack! Glacier Burst!"

The white dragon suddenly stood up and shot a large beam of ice from it's mouth directly at Alexis.

"Urrgh!" shouted Alexis as he struggled to keep his footing.

(Alexis' LP: 4700)

"It's your turn, wonder boy." said Max, moving his thick eyebrows up and down to annoy him.

Alexis looked depressed. He'd been chewed up and spat on, and he knew that at the end of every turn, whatever he did would be wiped, just like that. Kaput. His whole strategy ruined.

"I summon Rose, Warrior of Revenge in attack mode." Alexis said sadly. "Then I play Clear World."

An incredibly shiny diamond about the size of a boulder rose up and lit the field.

"I think the game is changing..." smirked Alexis. "My turn is over. Due to World's effect I have to play 500 LP AND take 1000 damage."

The jewel shot a bright red laser at Alexis. His LP count decreased.

(Alexis' LP: 3200)

"Hmmph." grunted Max. "You're annoying and you can make a brief surge out of nothing."

Max wiped his stubbly chin with the back of his hand.

"Woah. I'm actually sweating." Max smiled. "You're actually an exciting duelist to watch, you'd look good on TV."

Alexis smiled, accepting the complement.

"But rules are rules, and I have to play hard." Max sniffed sadly. "I discard two cards from my hand to return Rose and Clear World to your hand."

The jewel suddenly disappeared as Alexis returned it and Rose to his hand.

"Now, Brionac, attack his Life Points directly! Glacier Burst!" Max cried.

The white dragon flew up about three foot in the air and shot a holographic pulse of ice from it's mouth at Alexis.

"Ah!" Alexis screeched as he lost his balance, gripping onto the guard fencing on his platform in an attempt to stay upright.

(Alexis' LP: 900)

"Just one more attack and you're finished." Max smirked. "But I'm sad to say at the moment you haven't done enough to get you a place in this College. If the teachers could actually see this duel in person they'd let you in in a flash but on paper the results don't look good."

Some of the crowd groaned in sadness while others booed. Someone threw a drink at Max that missed his platform by inches.

Alexis drew. He managed to stop himself from smiling. He was going to turn this duel on it's head.

"I play Undergrowth Summoning!" he shouted triumphantly.

[spoiler=Undergrowth Summoning]

You can only activate this card when you have 3 or more Beast-Type monsters in your Graveyard. Special Summon 1 Level 5 or lower monster from your hand or Deck. If the summoned monster is Beast-Type, you can Special Summon 1 Level 3 or lower Beast-Type monster from your Graveyard. It's effect(s) are negated and it is removed from play during the End Phase.

"It's effect allows me to summon Ape Fighter from my hand." Alexis smiled.

"Pfft, that'll be gone along with all your chances of getting into this school next turn. Now step aside and watch the fireworks!" Max grinned.

"It's not over yet. If the summoned monster is a Beast-Type, it allows me to summon another Beast-Type from my Graveyard." Alexis smiled triumphantly.

"No. NO, NO, YOU CAN'T?!" Max shouted in shock.

"I choose Airbellum. Then I call forth, mighty Beast of strength, Sirius, Feline of Power!" Alexis shrieked at the top of his voice.

I had to read that book in middle school..... HATED IT! It was so hard to follow. Plus our class thought our teacher was a crack addict. So we just watched the movie and skipped the end of the book.

Animal Farm? It's a fantastic book. Great metaphor.

Alexis walked down the street as the clock struck thirteen

1984 ftw.

Oh, and you don't capitalize words mid-sentence, unless it's a name. "Hello and Welcome to the Academia Tryouts", "Your Number is Fifty-Three" and "Good Luck!".

I like your references they're so epic... lawled at this.

Hey Alexis is my real name :(

Now I know why you chose 53 and not 69.

The number 53 has meaning to me, that's why I chose it. I cut the 2nd Chapter short (again) because I was caught writing while I was supposed to be downstairs having breakfast. And Max runs a Brionac deck, hence the title.

  • 1 month later...

When I am done writing I often feel energized. My brain might be ready for a break but when I sit down and ready to write something again, the thought for a new idea will start to flash out. I believe what I write will contribute much on the project I am into now.
