Points don't really help me or make me happy. I hardly join contests that need entry fees anyway. (Exception of some that I feel are awesome.) If I recall correctly, that's what got Johanderson banned way back when, except I think he did it the other way around (he made like 80+ posts a day, so he had plenty of points to spare). Removing them would stop a lot of the 'Crime' (INVERTED COMMAS) on this site (scamming, dodgy contests etc.). As for Points, you get more and more as a reward for being active.
