Should Parents have the right to hit their child as a form of punishment

As a child, I have been spanked, smaked in the mouth, and had to taste soap. And to this day, I am very responsible, respectable, polite, and I maintain an increadible report card. As a result of Corporal Punishment, I have become a functioning member of society. Today I see children always misbehaving and all the parents do is say stop it, or, that's it! Go to the time out corner. What do you think about Corporal Punishment? Is it sensless violence, or an effective parenting technique?
