The Rune of Prosperity, an original RP OOC Topic

Recommended Posts

Elrel and Razia. These two countries are the largest, and the current superpowers on this planet. By leveraging their magical and technological prowess, they continued to conquer, until they decided to wage war on each other. This did not end well, with both sides suffering massive losses without any major military gains. In the end, a truce was called, and the two sides enjoyed a peace lasting more than 200 years.

Rumors have been going around about something called the "Rune of Prosperity", a very powerful object that, as its namesake says, would usher in a new glorious age. It is thought to be on an unmarked island, and an elite expedition team composed of both Elrelan and Razian soldiers was formed to explore it. However, most of the soldiers and explorers were killed by the native creatures, some of which haven't been seen in many years, and thought to be extinct. You are one of the surviving soldiers in either the Elrelan or Razian armies, trapped on the island, and now you must continue the task of finding the Rune of Prosperity.

[spoiler=Information about Elrel, Aether, and the Aether Soldiers]

"And then when they saw my Aether throb, well... the camp was pretty empty when I got there. Too bad too, I could have drowned them all easily" - Overheard inside an Elrelan military camp.

Elrelan society is centered around Aether, what is essentially a conduit for casting spells or powering magical contraptions. For example, people could power their stoves with their Aether. Each person gets their own Aether when they are 12, when it is decided they would be able to use it responsibly. Each Aether is different from one another; any Aether that seem similar have their own nuances that differentiate them. The Aether itself manifests as a wispy ball of light that follows its owner around. They aren't as technically advanced as the Razia due to their reliance on Aether Magic, but everything Aether-Powered is intuitive to use.

The military is filled with people trained in sword, bow, spear, and axe, and other similar weapons. While each soldier is expected to have some skill with their Aether, those in the army who show skill and ability above what is expected are often singled out, and train specifically in Aether manipulation, and gain the title of 'Aether Soldier'. Aether Soldiers are often more skilled in magic than with their weapon. The military also recruits anyone of any age, as long as they have an Aether already.

The overall level of technology in Elrel is comparable to most fantasy settings. There are some things that seem more modern, like streetlamps, but that is due to some people who have jobs that have them using their Aether to power them.

[spoiler=Information about Razia, Runes, and Runic Technology]

"After all this time working on inscribing runes for lamps and common household items, I finally was scoped out by the army! Yeah! Flame swords! Flame Guns! Flame Throwers!" - Runic Engineer, now committed pyromaniac

Razia also utilizes magic in their day to day life, but they use machines in order to cause various effects. These machines manipulate the magic in the air to gain a desired effect, but each machine lacks the flexibility an Aether has, only being able to do what it was designed to do. These are created by inscribing runes on key locations on the device. Most people do not know how, leaving the creation of runic machines to those specifically trained.

The Razia military leverages their mastery over runes in their military as well. Each weapon issued is inscribed with runes to give it an extra edge in battle, and higher-ranking soldiers often get customized weapons. All runic items have a rune of protection inscribed somewhere, which protects the device from damage, and more importantly, stops Aether users from using the inscribed magic. In addition, Aether Grenades are standard issue for all soldiers - these do no damage, but disrupt the magic in the air nearby for a small time, usually about 1 minute. No magic will work within the field, so Razians are trained in mundane combat to compensate. Unlike Elrel, Razian soldiers are all at least 17 years old; they do not employ children, no matter how skilled they are.

The overall level of technology in Razia is about equal to early 20th century. Steampunk, perhaps, except the technology is powered by magical runes, instead.

[spoiler=Rules]Besides all the RP forum and YCM rules. remember that as the GM, whatever I say is the law. Besides *that*, please do not godmod and respect your fellow players. This section is subject to change.

[spoiler=Application Instructions]

Instructions: For Elrelish characters, select your main weapon, and describe it if it is special in any way. Note that their weapons are not magical in any way. Under Aether, describe what types of magic your Aether allows you to cast, as well as its unique quirks and/or specialties. Razian characters ignore the Aether field completely. Instead, go into detail about any Runic Weaponry you carry on you, and their capabilities.

Finally, in the Sample Post field, play out a portion of a battle between your character against a soldier of the opposite army.

Another Bump.

I have been told that the premise was not entirely clear. Basically, you were sent to an island to retrieve the Rune of Prosperity that may or may not exist. However, you were stranded on the island due to a monster attack, and you must survive, find the Rune if possible, and escape.

Feel free to ask any questions, though. I'm open to ideas and willing to help out anyone who is interested in joining.
