Well then. I think that I might as well start a fanfic, especially since I seem able to write quite a bit in a short time. Here it is then, Bound Through Blood, the Yu-Gi_oh fanfic that, hopefully, brings something a little different to Yu-Gi-Oh fanfics.
“Bloody thing!” SMASH! The top-most window of a three story building erupts into shard of glass as a small metal box flies outwards from the inside. The metal box flies through the air and gets several meters from the house before it finally falls to the floor, it’s lock shattering to reveal a mass of Duel Monster cards.

On the other side of the shattered window something rather somewhat similar is happening. A man in his twenties, with black, elbow-length hair was punching one of the rather immobile brick walls that surrounded him in the large, empty, white room. Withdrawing his right hand in pain, keeling over and gagging, the young man begins to wretch violently. In between the loud outbursts of violent choking the dull thud of stairs is heard on the other side of the stairs. As the thudding gets louder the gap between the noises is decreasing in size as who or whatever ever starts running upwards. Suddenly, the loud clicking of a lock is heard and a woman, who looked not quite as old as the gagging man and with hair cut fairly shorter than his and not even reaching past her shoulders, rushed into the room with a large metal bucket. Crouching beside the man and offering the bucket to him, she steps back quickly as he snatches it from her, bows his head over and begins to vomit horrendously. Leaving him to himself, the woman starts to leave until she notices the shattered window. Turning towards the now extremely pale green coloured man with a look of exasperated fury she muttered with an extremely obvious tone of annoyance, “What is your problem?” As the man opened his mouth to answer her, his eyes open wide in shock and his face drains of more colour as he returns to vomiting in the quickly filling bucket. Shaking her head, the woman leaves the room, telling the man not to move.

As she heads down the stairs, the man stands up shakily and heads towards the broken window. As he stares out he sees the woman bending over to collect the scattered cards. As she stands up and heads back inside, the man heads over to the wall opposite the door and slides downwards with his back to the wall. As he finally gets somewhat comfortable and no longer feels like vomiting, the woman walks into the room again, now with the small metal case of cards attached to her waist. Giving the man a stern look and sitting just in front of him. The jeans she wore looked rather small and just barely reached past her knees. Coupled with the tight white t-shirt gave off the impression that she had suddenly grown to her size. Taking the mans hand and staring into his eyes, with quite a bit of effort considering that his face was quite heavily veiled by his hair, she said quietly, “You need to calm down. I know it’s hard for you sometimes but you shouldn’t be throwing things through windows.” The woman slowly handed the metal case back to the man. As she did so, he sat silently and stared into her bright green eyes which were not remotely hidden by her blonde hair. As he took the case he muttered a quiet “Thank you” and she stood up and left, he stared blankly at his reflection in the metal case. As he stared lifelessly into the case, a pair of dull, faded blue stared lifelessly back.

Half an hour later, he left the room and headed downstairs to the kitchen where a scintillating smell of bacon was lingering in the air and a sandwich lay on the table. Picking up the food and slowly ate the food. Sitting down at the table that stood so proudly in the centre of the room, he turned his head up and looked towards the woman who was still waiting for her food to be ready. Clearing his throat, the man started a conversation. “So… How’s you’re day been?”
“Just great,” she said with a heavy tone of sarcasm. “I’ve had to look after a violently puking twenty three year old, pick up his cards that he left laying around after a tantrum and now I’ve probably burnt my lunch.” The way she spoke to the man probably would’ve been thought of as rude by others but he knew she was joking. He knew her too well for her to surprise him with harsh words anyway. As she began to eat her probably burnt sandwich, she asked him, “What were you throwing metal cases around for anyway?” The man gave her a guilty look, similar to one a child might give if they’ve ripped a school uniform three days before term started.
“New job. Feeling a little nervous.” The woman gave a little laugh.
“I think throwing metal cases through windows is a little more than nervous. Besides, what’s there to be nervous about? You’ve been promoted haven’t you?”
“Doesn’t matter. I’ll still be treated the same. Nobody cares what you are after promotion. They’ll still treat you like you’re the new guy.”
“Oh calm down. Look I’ll drop you off in five minutes. You can get your needles and head off on your job.”
“Fair enough.” The man got to his feet and slipped on a pair of trainers. As he left to leave the house, he took a quick look in the mirror. He looked presentable. He didn’t look like too much of a homeless guy for there to be any trouble over it. His baggy black t-shirt was matched in shabbiness by his dark green tracksuit bottoms. Putting a hand through his hair and pulling the hair from his face he thought that he’d at least get his needles.

As the woman shouted to leave, the man left the house and hopped in the car waiting for her. As she climbed in and started the engine, she turned to him and said casually, “You’re looking better.”
“Yeah.” He said back. “Bacon’ll do that to the dead.” Laughingly politely at his rather meagre joke they drove off. As they turned a corner and headed onto the motorway that ran throughout New Domino, the woman turned back to him and said, slightly more seriously than before, “You are feeling better aren’t you?
“Of course. I’m not puking am I?” He answered casually. He brought the window down and rested his arms on the door. The wind felt good and the rushing noise put reality away for a moment. Five years ago, an epidemic broke out in the city. A travelling man had contracted some form of flu and brought it in. It caused massive nausea in those that caught it and the vomiting that was brought around as a result was so severe that several hundred people died of dehydration. Fortunately the mortality rate wasn’t high enough to cause massive panic and the virus was somewhat treatable though not curable though even with the treatment it was still contagious and the forces that be made the choice to essentially quarantine New Domino. The city still functions as it always did but any outside trading is done through the government and as an incentive to keep the potentially dying population, the government regularly releases the treatment through different ways in order to keep the people alive. Most of the treating medicine is usually delivered through the general reports and research being performed on the illness but anyone with a job that holds a role in morale boosting activities that keeps morale up, going from television presenters to sports commentators to students at duel academy, are given medicine regularly. Fortunately, the man thought, getting a job at one of these places or getting an enrolment in the academy was difficult due to the bad condition most people were left in.

As the car arrived at the large white gates and a small hatch slid open on the station to their left and heavily covered head popped out and the woman begin searching in the glove box for something. As she found what she was looking for and had shown it to the guard, the guard nodded and the getes opened. The man saw in the mirror of the car that she had flashed a badge with the words “Dr. Maria Legardo” deeply embossed upon it. The car drove up to the entrance to a large pristine building and Maria turned to the man and said, “Remember, the treatment station is the second left through this door. You should be able to find your way after you’ve been treated.” She leant over and hugged him. “It’s good that you got this. Really.” The man opened the door of the car and climbed out while muttering an embarrassed “Thanks.” before closing the door and leaving through the entrance of the massive building.

As he headed down the corridor and into the room where the treatment was being administered through some rather large looking needles, he started to speak to the head doctor, but before he could start, he was being ordered over behind one of the many curtains. As he came through, he was immediately thrust down onto a chair by a rather disgruntled looking man. As the needle pierced his arm and the liquid in the needle was forced into his bloodstream, the male nurse pushed him out. Rubbing his arm, the man left the room, turned left and continued down the corridor until he came to a large locker room that was coated in a light shade of lilac. An announcement was made asking for free staff to report to the elevator. Walking at a slow speed after the signs that pointed out where “the elevator” was, the man took in little about his surroundings. It seemed like a rather bland hospital though with less dying people. As the man arrived at a much larger corridor he saw a large mass of metal that was presumably a large elevator for large things like helicopters or elephants. As he approached the elevator he was given a badge, a duel disc and a deck of Duel Monsters cards. He stood slightly taken aback at this sudden action and sighed as the loud mechanical noise that was unmistakeably the elevator beginning its ascent began to emanate around him. As the elevator arrived at the top and searchlight flashed and targeted him. Suddenly the loud and extremely familiar voice of the Duel Monsters commentator burst into his head. “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WE HAVE YET ANOTHER ROADBLOCK FOR THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE! BUT THE QUESTION IS: WILL HE BE THE WALL THAT CAUSES THEM TO HALT IN THEIR TRACKS OR WILL HE SIMPLY BE THE SPEEDBUMP ON THEIR WAY TO GLORY?! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE WELCOME… PROFESSOR HUGH ELDERRY!!!”

The lights in Hugh’s eyes dimmed and all around him he could see the cheering and screaming faces of thousands of duel hungry spectators. His time as a professor at Duel Academy had started with a public show of beating the hopes of enrolment out of a potential student.

Woo…
Sifting through his new temporary deck before having to take his place and duel, Hugh found it to be quite interesting. Looking through, he found few cards he had actually seen played. He had a deck full of Vision Hero cards. These weren’t exactly hard to find cards but due to Hugh’s lack of purchasing card packs that contained these, he found them quite intriguing. Something he found through a quick search was that they all seemed to share the same effect, allowing them to be placed onto the spell & trap zone if the owner took damage. His brain speeding after this discovery, he looked for any other cards that could prove useful.

Hearing his name being called to a duel arena, Hugh stopped looking through his cards and climbed the steps. In the centre of the gigantic stadium a large, old-style duelling arena had been built for public events, such as standard duel tournaments, as well as these entrance exams. Recently, there had been a publicising of the entrance exam duels and the New Domino Duel Academy began to to allow public viewing for a fee. The fee was what the Duel Academy as payment to medicate their students and staff.

Reaching the top of the stairs that led up to the pedestal for a duelist to stand. Shuffling his deck and laying it flat on the deck zone, Hugh waited for his opponent, dreading the time when he’d have to duel. He was a good duelist, he would have had to be to become a professor at the duel academy, but he didn’t like what he had to do professionally. To make sure he kept his job he had to squash the hopes of a person who wanted to enter the school. If he didn’t his job would be on the line. He was never really comfortable breaking dreams.

Another person was ascending the stairs to the opposing pedestal and as they stepped into the small booth at the top, Hugh saw who he was playing against. His opponent was a boy of about 15 with rather large, brown afro. “Great,” thought Hugh, rather annoyed by his opponent, “The first duel of my career is against some weird looking joke of a kid. If I lose I’ll be mortified.”

Sighing heavily as the afro-kid slammed his deck down onto the glowing “mat”, Hugh composed himself. The echoing voice of the announcer burst from the area around him as it was announced that the first duel of the examinations was about to begin, between Professor Hugh Elderry and Frederick Heigll. “You’re going down Professor!” yelled a strangely squeaky voice. Looking around for the source of this oddity, Hugh realised, with yet another annoying pang, that it had come from Frederick. Slamming his hands down on the railings by his sides, Hugh stared downwards.

“Kid, there’s something you need to know.” Hugh started, still looking towards the floor, “Arrogance doesn’t count towards your exam. Now, if you don’t mind, we’re meant to be duelling.”

“Fine, whatever you say Professor,” Frederick retorted, with a horrible flush of sarcasm on “Professor”, “But I’m starting this thing. NOW DRAW!”

LP(Hugh=4000|Frederick=4000)

The pair drew their first cards, Hugh with five cards in his hand and Frederick with six. While consulting his own cards, Hugh noticed an uncomfortable look flash across Frederick’s face. He clearly hadn’t prepared properly and couldn’t come up with a strategy with his hand. His face now full to the brim of arrogance and confidence, Frederick snatched up a few cards and threw them onto the playing field. “I summon Koa’ki Meiru Beetle, in attack mode.” A large, green beetle with an enormous horn burst from the floor of the arena with a flash of light. “I also place two face-down cards and finish my turn.”

“Fair play kid.” Said Hugh as he drew his card and started his turn. Taking a quick look at the cards in his hand, Hugh picked up one and threw it to the field. “I summon Vision Hero Vaion, in attack mode!” A monster in simple black and white armour, that was highly reminiscent of a comic-book hero, burst from the field and stood gallantly as Hugh continued his turn.

“Now that my Vision Hero has been summoned, I’m activating his own effect, allowing me to send a level 4 or lower Vision Hero from my deck to the graveyard and the card I’m sending is Vision Hero Increase!” The card swooped from Hugh’s deck and into his graveyard. “Now I’ll place two face-down cards and hand it over to you.”

“That’s it?” Frederick laughed in a mocking tone. “I thought you Professors were great at duelling, but all you’ve managed to do is get a monster in your graveyard on your first turn!” Drawing his card, Frederick studied the ones now in his hand closely. “Now I’ll attack you’re pathetic Vision Hero and take your life points. Now go my insect and crush his monster!”

“I activate Skull Invitation and Raigeki Break!” interrupted Hugh, just as the massive beetle reached Vaion. “Now I’ll discard a Vision Hero Increase and target your beetle!”

“No you don’t, I activate Dark Bribe!” Frederick’s card immediately negated the effect of Raigeki Break. The resulting chain caused a mass of dust to fly upwards, masking the arena. As it settled, it revealed the end result. The field was empty except for Frederick’s Koa’ki Meiru Beetle and Hugh’s Skull Invitation, leaving him 900 life points lower. “But don’t forget the Skull Invitation you left up Prof. Now you’re even further behind!” Another 300 points were deducted from Hugh’s life points.

“I know that Fred. But take a quick breather and watch this!” Hugh pulled two cards from his graveyard and slammed them onto his spell & trap zone. Two Vision Hero Increases climbed onto the arena in a burst of light. The blue and yellow armoured heroes stood beside a Skull Invitation and opposite a bewildered Frederick.

“How did that happen!?” exclaimed Frederick in surprise.

“Well, most of these Vision Heroes share a certain effect allowing me to place them on the field when I take damage and as I took damage twice, from your beetle and from my Skull Invitation, I got to place two of these awesome dudes from my graveyard into the spell & trap zone. They’re useless at the moment but when I get another Vision Hero on the field I can unleash a few decent effects.” Hugh didn’t suppress a grin while explaining this all to Frederick. Kid was too cocky, knocking him down a few pegs would be good for him. “So what’re you going to do?”

“I’m going to place a monster face-down and end my turn!” shouted Frederick.

LP (Hugh=2800|Frederick=4000)

“Fair enough.” Hugh drew his card and laughed out loud in excitement. “This is just the card I need!” yelled Hugh. “Now I activate, The Warrior Returning Alive and I add Vision Hero Vaion to my hand but he isn’t staying because now I summon him!” Hugh’s life points dropped by 300 and the black and white hero once again burst out of the arena floor and took a gallant pose. “Now I activate his effect and send my last Vision Hero Increase to the graveyard.” For the second time in the duel, a card slid from Hugh’s deck to his graveyard but this time, reducing his life points by 300.

“Now here’s the great part. I’ll tribute Vaion to special summon one of my Increases from the spell & trap zone.” Vaion faded away and was soon replace by a Vision Hero Increase who stepped forward into his place, leaving Hugh with 300 less life points. “And because of Increase’s effect, I can special summon a Hero from my deck. Now say hello to Vision Hero Minimum Ray!” A mass of aqua light erupted next to Increase and soon another Vision Hero burst forth in a brilliant armour that was a combination of a dark blue and silver with a single red eye on his face.

“And now I’ll place another Increase in my spell & trap zone and activate Minimum Ray’s effect, destroying your beetle and replacing Minimum Ray with one of my Increases!” Minimum Ray let loose a blast of red light from his eye, destroying the beetle. As Minimum Ray left the field, another Vision Hero Increase took his place and reduced Hugh’s life points by 300 yet again.

“Now, by activating the effect of the Increase in my spell & trap zone to tribute one of the Increase’s on the field and special summon him.” A light shined as one Vision Hero Increase evaporated and another took its place, depleting Hugh’s life points even further. “Now I’ll summon another Vision Hero from my deck. In fact, it’s a new one! I summon Vision Hero Witch Reid!” Another Vision Hero climbed out of the arena floor and positioned itself between the two Increase’s that were already on the field. This new one was different to the others. It wore a purple witch clothing and sported much less armour. “And with her ability, I can destroy all of your spell & trap cards!” Frederick’s face-down exploded and reduced his life points by 300.

“Now I activate a classic card that I’m sure everyone knows.” Hugh whipped out a card from his hand and threw it down to the playing field while yelling, “POLYMERIZATION! Now, three Vision Heroes combine to create, Vision Hero Trinity!” A new Vision Hero, clad in crimson armour exploded onto the field in a magnificent shower of sparks but dragging Hugh’s life points down to a very small 100 points.

“Well, now I need to finish of this massive turn filled with monsters with something else that’s a little old school. I equip my Vision Hero Trinity with Fairy Meteor Crush! And with this little toy, even if you’re hiding behind a defense position monster, I can still inflict damage to your life points, combined with the attack doubling effect of Trinity, and I can deal a whopping 5000 life point damage to you, right now! Now attack his monster and finish this!” The mass of crimson armour flew towards Fredericks face-down monster and gave a punch that was so full of power it caused massive shockwaves. As the card flipped up and revealed itself, Hugh let out a great sigh of relief. Frederick’s monster was a Pinch Hopper which had just enough defense points to let Hugh win this duel.

Final LP (Hugh=100|Frederick=0)

As Frederick’s life points quickly dropped to 0, the crowd let out an explosive amount of cheering. The poor child let out an angry yell and kicked at the floor hard, causing him to yell out in pain, and Hugh left his stand to head back down for a break.

As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he was shown to the break room and greeted by one of his fellow Professors. He was a tall man with a long, golden ponytail and wearing a long, black trenchcoat. Though his height was enough to make him impressive, his eyes clinched the picture. They were a dark, piercing red that seemed to cut the soul. As the man held out a hand of welcome to Hugh, with Hugh shakily accepting it, he let out a burst of laughter that seemed extremely unfitting for him. “Good show my dear boy! Good show indeed. Not exactly a long duel but with your last turn you could’ve taken the time it would’ve taken to complete two! Not that that’s a bad thing or anything, we really need to show off in these entrance exams because they keep the academy’s income up. Anyway, I’m Al Griff, horribly short name but it’s what I was given. I teach most of the general academics at the academy as well as introductory duelling psychology. It really helps to know what your opponent thinks in a duel. Lets you know if they have a Mirror Force as a face-down or simply a Giant Trunade. Welcome aboard!”

And pulling Hugh into a massive hug, Hugh hoped that not all the professors were as overjoyed as this man. It would make his job seem extremely awkward.

Wrenching himself out of Al’s brace, Hugh attempted to catch his breath. The massive hug had winded him. Al was rubbing the back of his head, an embarrassed grin etched onto his face. “Sorry about that. I, uh, need to head out now. If we let these kid’s fight between themselves we’d have anarchy.”

Al left the room and headed into the light to the announcement of his name. Watching him leave, Hugh want to find a seat to rest on. He was feeling especially light-headed and his vision was blurring. Collapsing upon a nearby chair, Hugh held his head in his hands, his head ringing. Aching in pain, he closed his eyes and thought of happier, less pain-filled times.

Opening his eyes, Hugh looked down at his lap. Red cloth had been strewn over him. Grabbing at it so as to remove it, he gave a bewildered gasp when it slipped through his grasp and fell to the floor. Moving his hand back up to his head, he paused as he caught sight of his palm. A large amount of blood covered his hand. Shocked, he wiped his hand over his clothes and attempted to get the blood off of his hand. Looking back at his hand, a terrified look blanketed his face. A large gaping cut had been torn across his palm. Blood was pouring down his arm. Crying out in alarm, he stood up and looked around for someone to help him. But no one was there.

He was in the middle of a large, empty, brown room. Frantically looking around for some form of exit, Hugh spotted a small pool of water. Sprinting over to the liquid, he dived towards it and thrust his hand into the puddle. But it didn’t stop there. It widened and, eventually, Hugh began to slide downwards into the emptiness that was welcoming him. Trying to climb back up the slope that was forming quickly underneath his feet, he tripped over his own feet and fell tumbling backwards into the darkness.

Falling through the darkness, Hugh could see the silhouettes of distant figures against an oddly bright light. Seeing faces of those he could not recognise, pain blazed through Hugh’s eyes. Yelling out and slamming his head to his knees, pain blazed throughout his body.

Falling to the floor, convulsing wildly, Hugh quickly attracted the attention of the people around him. Feeling himself being picked up by multiple arms and quickly thrown onto a table, his head flailed wildly and his arms were limp at his side. A sharp pain erupted in his side as a needle pierced his flesh. As a ice cold liquid flushed his insides, the surroundings came into focus. Rubbing his forehead with his numb hand, Hugh sat up and looked at the person to his right. A bald, dark-skinned man sat on a chair beside Hugh’s table. Clearing his throat, with a considerable amount of effort, Hugh asked in a strangled voice, “What the hell happened?”

“You had a bad reaction to the medicine. It happens to some people who’ve had it for the first time. You’re body’s immune system tries to reject it by creating antibodies which end up causing more trouble than should happen, like an organ transplant can, and soon too many antibodies are created and the medicine essentially rewrites them into a venom.” The man paused for breath and stood up. “We injected you with a chemical that stops the production of the rewriteable antibodies though it can’t do anything to the already rewritten ones. Thankfully, however, the venom they make isn’t potent enough to kill without more than a day’s exposure and even then it has to be in a high amount. All you have to endure now is an extra injection a day. Now I’ll go and write this up and send it to the medical staff. I’m Professor Kyle Krieger by the way, I basically give driving lessons.” The professor walked into a connected room and the faint sound of chatter could be heard. Another voice, however, spoke out above his, as well as many others.

“Will all staff who have performed an exam please leave the premises. This announcement will repeat every thirty minutes.” Sitting up on the table, Hugh took a look around. A few other people were leaving though many still remained. Performing only one or two exams at a time can’t be a particularly fast way of enrolling students but at least it allowed more people to view, not everyone stayed for the whole length, and it allowed any reporters for whatever publication to easily log each and every duel allowing easy writing. Climbing off of the table and returning the deck he still had with him, Hugh started to leave when Professor Krieger caught up with him.

“You’re not to leave yet Professor Elderry.”

“Huh,” Hugh turned to face him, “Why not?”

“We got a call from some woman. She asked us to tell you to wait for her. I think she said her name was Maria.”

Hugh sat down on a nearby chair. “Fair enough.” He said with a resigned voice. Leaning back and looking at the ceiling, Hugh waited in silence while the others around him continued to wander about. Hearing some rather heavy footsteps, Hugh looked around him. The tall figure of Al Griff was approaching him. As the hulking man pulled a chair towards Hugh and sat, Hugh smiled slightly. The man was wearing an extremely out of place grin that completely undermined his intimidating figure.

“Hello Hugh! Just examined a young girl by the name of, ah, it doesn’t matter what her name. The point is that she gave me a proper thrashing.” Griff let out a burst of laughter. Stopping, he looked at Hugh, who still had a smile on his face. “What’s gotten you happy?”

“Nothing.” Hugh quickly wiped the smile from his face. “Anyway, Professor Griff,”

“Call me Al my dear boy, everyone else does. I ask them to.”

“Okay then, Al. You said earlier you gave lessons on ‘introductory duelling psychology’. What does that actually mean?”

“Ah…” Al’s face had gone slightly red at these words. “You see, I actually teach a small bit on general psychology but as I’m not a great worker of how people work, I mostly talk about how to tell if people are lying. You know, the way they talk and act. That sort of thing is the only real psychology I can perform so I usually skip over most of the other stuff unless, of course, I’m tutoring a pupil on a certain area. After all, I wouldn’t have the job if I could only tell if people were lying would I?”

“I suppose not.” Hugh said, pondering on what Al had said. He supposed he was right. What he taught was never a mandatory subject and in a school that also helped people to play Duel Monsters, it probably was something that just helped playing the game. Suddenly, his trail of thought was broken. A woman was walking towards Hugh and yelling his name. Looking up, Hugh saw the familiar face of Maria. Standing up and walking over to her, Hugh said a goodbye to Al, who gave a much more jovial one back, Hugh stood facing the woman.

“So can I leave now?” He asked her, with a tone of impatience.

“Yeah, come on. I’ve got you’re medication.” Maria responded with matched impatience. Sighing in relief Hugh left with her.

As they came to the exit, Hugh took a quick look at Maria, whose face glowed in the light of the setting sun. Her blonde hair was lying flatly over her shoulders and her green eyes shined. Hugh wondered why she helped him so much. He hadn’t been much more than a burden to her but she still stood by him. It was only because of her that he had gotten his first job at the New Domino Duel Academy as a from-home office worker and even while he had the job, he never really brought much to her house.

As the two got in the car and drove off, Hugh couldn’t help but continue to think why she was so helpful. She was a good person and didn’t ask for anything and, he guessed, if he asked her why she did what she did she’d probably just say that she wants to see people be happy. He’d seen her help other people for nothing before and that’s what she always said afterwards when they’d ask how to repay her. Hugh kept these thoughts in his head during the drive back, all the while staring into the golden sunset and thanking Maria silently for everything she did.
Waking up from a restless sleep, Hugh groped around the floor, knocking over the empty bucket, and found a syringe. Lazily wiping the gunk from his eyes, he held the syringe firmly and plunged the needle into a particularly prominent vein. Pushing the plunger down and squeezing the liquid into his blood he yawned loudly. The sound of footsteps could be heard on the other side of the door and soon after the door opened and Maria walked into the room.

As Hugh sat up on the bed and rested his head against the wall, Maria stood by the bed and looked at him inquiringly. “Are you felling okay?” she said in a slightly demanding tone.

“Yeah, what’s with the voice though? What’ve I done?” Asked Hugh, in a slightly confused manner.

“Nothing, it’s just that I’ll need to keep my eye on you after that seizure thing you had yesterday. If anything happens again someone needs to know.”

“Well, I’m fine at the moment so I think it’s time for breakfast.”

Sighing in exasperation, Maria left the room and closed the door slightly, leaving a slight crack and calling behind her, “Come down in a few minutes and I’ll have a sandwich ready for you.”

“Thanks!” Hugh called back as he climbed out of bed slowly. Walking over to the door, he stepped out, shut the door and opened the wardrobe that was built into the wall beside it. Pulling out a black shirt and a pair of brown trousers, he got dressed and after spending a few minutes searching for his work ID in his remarkably barren room, he headed down the two flights of stairs towards a delicious smell of bacon was escaping from the lovely hugging combination of bread and pig that was the bacon sandwich resting on a plate on the wooden table.

Taking a seat and picking up his sandwich, Hugh looked around. Maria wasn’t there and as far as he could tell, she wasn’t making any food for herself. As he heard the creaking of stairs, he turned around and was greeted by the familiar tight-shirted, short-jeaned figure that was Maria, coming down the stairs.

“You’re not eating?” Hugh asked inquisitively.

“I had some food earlier. I had gotten up much before you did so I got some stuff done, mainly getting you this.” Maria opened another of the wardrobes that littered the walls of the house and brandished a large, silvery, flowing coat that would’ve made even Seto Kaiba envious. It lacked any sleeves and, much like the coat worn by Kaiba, it had rather prominent shoulder pads but unlike the coat worn b Kaiba, it lacked the KaibaCorp logos and instead had a flaming axe emblazoned prominently across the back of the coat. The coat seemed to be flapping softly in wind impressively though there wasn’t even the slightest hint of a draft in the room. Reaching out and touching the coat, Hugh was startled to feel that it seemed almost weightless, as though the coat was made out of a water that was solid.

Stuttering slightly as he tried to form a thanks in his mouth, he managed to squeeze out a stunned “Why?”

Smiling happily, Maria said cheerfully, “It’s a congratulations gift. You now have quite a well paying job but two years ago you had almost nothing. Everyone deserves a second chance and you’ve done wonders with yours so here’s a congratulations.”

“Thank you….” said Hugh quietly.

“Well, we should be leaving now. I’ve got a job to do and so do you. So, put this on, get in the car and I’ll be there in a second.”

“Sure.” And, still stunned, Hugh pulled the coat on, still impressed heavily with it, left the building and climbed into the car. A few seconds later, Maria left with an envelope in her mouth and also climbed in. As she threw the envelope onto the dashboard, Hugh turned to her.

“What’s in there?” He asked quizzically.

“Just a note to the accounting department. They’re cutting some jobs for no real reason so I’m disputing it.”

“That’s awfully good of you.” Hugh said cheekily.

“Well, if you want, you can walk to work?” Maria said in a jokingly threatening way.

“I’m fine.” Hugh said quickly.

The car started and the pair drove off down the street and were soon on the main motorway towards the Duel Academy. Eventually, they arrived and as Hugh climbed out of the car and started to closed the door, Maria leant over and said, “I’m sorry but you’ll have to find your own way home tonight, there’s some stuff that needs doing so I’ll be out late.”

“No worries.” Said Hugh in a carefree manner, “I can remember how to get back so I’ll be fine.”

“Good.” said Maria simply, closing the door and driving off. As she left the premises and left Hugh’s eyesight, Hugh looked up at the building he had to enter. It was a magnificent piece of architecture that resembled a grand chapel and had a spire that reached past the highest of clouds.

Walking through the double doors, Hugh approached the main desk and asked the receptionist for his timetable.

“Oh, you’re the new teaching professor aren’t you? Well then, here’s your timetable, you’re meant to be at a lesson now so you should hurry, you’re teaching duelling, which I must say is quite good for a new professor, and you’ll need to head to the end of that corridor.” The woman pointed towards a corridor on the left. Giving his thanks, Hugh bolted down the corridor and, thinking on his feet, decided to go for the most grand entrance he could go for.

Kicking the door open with a deafening bang, Hugh strode into the room. Peering around he saw that every student, a mass of 15 and 16 year olds, had frozen in their spots. Most were at their desks and simply staring at him while some were doodling on the board at the front of the room. As he walked into the classroom with his head high, he slammed his hand on his desk and said in a loud, clear voice, “To your seats everyone. I’ll be teaching you from now on. At least as far as duelling goes anyway. Now, as I said, to your seats.”

The students that were not already seated headed to their seats. Hugh knew what they were doing. They were sizing him up. They’d do what he wanted for a while then they’d push their luck as far as they could too see their limits. Hugh wouldn’t give them too much leeway though.

“Now then, I’m Professor Hugh Elderry.” Hugh wrote his name on the board as he said it. Turning to the class, he continued, “Okay, since I don’t know any of you, I obviously don’t know your names. To start things off, we’ll be having ourselves a little tournament. As we have 16 of you, we can do a simple tournament where the winner goes on. You’re seating looks good as it’s already in a 4 by 4 grid so, everyone on the outside columns, duel the ones on the inside. We’re doing this so I can see your skill, so now then, duel!”

The class set off at high speed. Something that Hugh didn’t expect. It seemed extremely odd that a class would immediately perform something a teacher ordered without a single person questioning anything. Smiling slightly, Hugh searched the room and scanned the duels that were starting. Obviously not much had happened apart from the initial drawing but some people had already summoned a monster. He could immediately spot a couple of archetypes being played.

Wandering around slowly, Hugh occasionally repeated the basics of duelling, not that he needed to, and frequently checked the clock. He had a rather long lesson to teach, 4 hours long rather than the 2 hour norm but as he was the duelling professor he was expected to be teaching the longer sessions in an academy that focuses on the game of Duel Monsters. His day had started off well and he just hoped that it would stay that way at the very least.

After a couple of hours of duelling, with many breaks of course, the semi-finals of the classroom tournament had started. At the duelling arenas, the classroom desks were able to rearrange themselves to create varying arenas with the teachers permission of course, stood Virgil Adante. A young man with messy black hair, which held a single white streak through it, he was often distant from the other students though he speaks unabashedly towards almost everyone within the school. This was, of course, information Hugh had learnt from the other students and the student files from the other schools.

Opposite him was his one of his good friend, Lan Marsh. A rather feminine looking boy, he was often considered a part of the female demographic in the school, though none of the students really used the word demographic. Despite his feminine appearance, his behaviour was more emulative of Virgil’s. The two would, apparently, skip classes often. Despite this lack of punctuality, the two had still obtained top grades.

As the pairs seats rose into position and became podiums, Hugh stood up, cleared his throat and spoke clearly, “This is an 8000 Life Point match, other than that, there’s not much else to worry about. Prepare your decks accordingly and get ready to duel.” The pair nodded and both took out a few cards, replacing them quickly. Shuffling their decks, they began the duel.

As they began and drew their first cards, Hugh noted the tense atmosphere. Apparently, the two were ferociously good duellists. Watching closely, Hugh seated himself in his chair and waited for the first moves to be played.

Lan went first. Drawing his card in what may as well be the ceremonial dramatic action, he glanced shortly at his cards and threw down his first cards.

“I summon Lonefire Blossom in Attack Mode, then I’ll activate its ability, tributing it to summon Gigaplant in Attack Mode!” As the small bundle of a plant evaporated, an overlarge, mutated rose with a wide gaping mouth replaced it.

“Now I’ll activate Targeted Search! Now I discard one spell card then we both add one spell card from our decks to our hand and the good part is we don’t have to show each other what they are! Now, I’ll lay down the rest of my hand and let you start.”

“You’ll regret using that card Lan, this’ll be over too soon.” Virgil spoke clearly as he drew his card and started his turn. “I’ll activate the spell card you so caringly provided, Burden of the Mighty! Then I’ll activate another one for good measure! But that’s not all, as you well know. I’m going to summon Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior! Then, obviously, I’ll attack your severely weakened Gigaplant!” The warrior charged towards the mutated monstrosity and severed its entirety cleanly in two. As the Life Point counter on Lan’s side clicked down to 7350, Virgil pulled his next move.

“Now I activate Mystical Space Typhoon and destroy the face-down card in the centre!” Virgil shouted as he pointed dramatically towards the designated card.

“Bad choice Virgil, that’s my Plant Food Chain. And now that that’s gone I can summon my Gigaplant again!” Lan smirked as his rose monstrosity clambered out of the ground. “And because your Burden of the Mighty’s are there, my Gigaplants attack points are 1200 making them low enough for me to activate this! Inferno Reckless Summon! Now I’ll summon my other Gigaplants and you, obviously, summon your Garroths!” As Lan finished, three identical warriors were staring down the monstrous plants.

“Well played Lan, I guess I should’ve used my Typhoon earlier. Oh well, I guess I’ll hve to lay these cards down and end my turn.” Three face-down cards appeared at Virgils end of the arena.

Lan drew his card and began his turn. “Well, it seems I only have one card in my hand, but I may as well use it, so here goes, Rain of Mercy!” Both players Life Pints increased by 1000. “Now by activating Polymerization, I can fuse two of my Gigaplants to create Super Alloy Beat Raptinus! But he’s not attack. Instead, I’m going to make use of his and Gigaplants effects to set up a one way win for myself!”

“You wouldn’t!” Virgil looked genuinely shocked. If Hugh was right, he had no defence from what was about to come his way.

“I would! Now, I activate Mass Driver, then activate my Gigaplants effect, summoning another Gigaplant. Now, by tributing the used Gigaplant, I can deal 400 Life Points worth of damage to you, without even attacking!” And so Lan did. He repeated this over and over. Virgil sat watching his Life Points drop. And drop. And drop. And drop.

Once they hit the bottom point of 200, Virgil let out a wild laugh and interrupted Lan. “Thank you for this Lan! Thanks so much! Now, because of this massive difference in Life Pints, 8150 in fact, I can activate the amazingly situational effect of Life Equalizer! Thank you for setting up this situation!” The pairs Life Points set themselves at 3000. “Now, to finish this duel before you can, I’m activating Gift Card, but I’m going to chain Bad Reaction to Simochi to it first. And you know what this means! You’re 3000 Life Points are KAPUT!”

And it was true. Both sides had used any cards they had that could have chained, and the Life Point loss from the Gift Card was going to decimate Lan’s Life Points. As they finally clicked into place at 0, the Arena cleared itself and the podiums lowered, reforming into seats, Hugh stood up and announced the winner as Virgil, quite unnecessarily.

The two duellists headed over to Hugh. As he congratulated them, he addressed the class directly, “That’ll be enough for a while, the other two semi-finalists will duel in ten minutes, until them, congratulate these two and prepare yourselves.”

As Virgil and Lan took their own seats, Hugh approached the pair.

“Great duel guys, on both sides.” Hugh said in an appraising way.

“Thanks.” Muttered Virgil somewhat quietly as Lan nodded.

“Well then, could you answer a few questions?”

“Sure.” Virgil muttered as Lan, once again, nodded his head.

“Well, firstly, Lan, why do you think Virgil won that game?”

“He knows my strategy. I should’ve suspected something after he actually allowed me to begin the OTK. It seems obvious now and clearly the wrong thing to do. I should’ve used a new strategy.” Said Lan in a reflective tone as he leant back, Virgil nodding in silent agreement.

“You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head there Lan. Seriously though,” said Virgil, leaning forward to talk more easily with Lan and Hugh, “Try and build a better deck, not that the one you have is bad. It’s just that if you’ve only got one deck that pretty much involves enabling OTK’s, it becomes easy for other players to learn your style and devise extremely simple tactics to work around it.”

“You seem to have thought this through a little Virgil, did you actually expect this outcome?” inquired Hugh.

“Yeah, no offence Lan, but as I said, I know his play style.”

“Of course. Now then, secondly, what are your opinions on the other semi-finalists, Guy and Shelby?”

“To be honest,” Virgil started with a smug, honest face, “I don’t know anything about either of them. Guy used to go to my old school but he was one of the kids who loitered at the backs of the classes. To be honest, I didn’t even know he was coming to this or if he even liked Duel Monsters. I haven’t seen him play. Shelby’s somewhat the same. Much more talkative than Guy and was definitely in with the popular girls but other than that, I’ve got nothing on her duelling.”

“Shelby’s actually quite a good duellist,” piped in Lan, “I haven’t managed to beat her.”

“Is that because you haven’t played against her?” Virgil mocked.

“Don’t be stupid Virgil, I know you were rather flirty with the girls but I did actually talk to them like you talk to me, you know, without flirting.” Virgil raised his eyebrows with a musing expression on his face. “Don’t give me that weird look. You know I spent more time with the girls than I did with the guys when I first moved here. Anyway, Shelby runs a Vision Hero deck if I memory serves correctly.”

“Vision Heroes?” Hugh asked, intrigued, “A great set of cards, not what I run with bu-“

“Not what you run with?” Virgil cut him off quickly, “Aren’t they what you used to beat down that weird Freddy kid?”

“Yeah, but the Professors are given test decks. I thought every knew that.”

Virgil’s face went slightly pink and he retorted in a slightly annoyed voice, “I didn’t pay attention during the entrance exams, I was too busy beating that massive blonde guy.”

“You mean Griff?”

“I dunno. He either didn’t play well, or just got bad hands whatever his name was. I wiped the floor with him.” said Virgil, rather arrogantly.

“Okay… Well then, thanks for answering my questions you two, I need to make sure the arena’s calibrated for the next duel.”

“No problem Prof.” Virgil replied with a smirk on his face as Lan gave a final nod.

Hugh left the two f them and sat down at his desk. Pressing some of the brightly lit areas that appeared on the slightly raised holographic display, several colours began changing and several numbers began shifting around. As the changes slowed down and eventually stopped, Hugh clepped his hands together and cleared his throat impressively. Standing up, getting ready to address the class, Hugh had a sudden pang of pain run through his head.

Holding his hand to his head, gritting his teeth, he looked towards the windows. Despite the light seeping through simply aggravating his headache, he stared intently at the reflection of the door in the window. He could see the door handle turning slowly. Looking around at the door and confirmed what he had seen. The handle was turning.

Preparing himself for a late student or some member of staff delivering a message he waited with his arms folded but quickly unfolded them in surprise as the handle relaxed, reset and the door clicked back into place. Then, shooting Hugh full of surprise tenfold larger than that of the door being left alone, the same door burst of its hinges and was sent flying towards the other side of the room. Staring in shock at the busted door, Hugh quickly snapped back at the door frame, checking for any injured, thankfully there were none.

In the door frame, standing with a small revolver in their hand, was a man of about the same height as Hugh. Clad in a dark brown leather uniform, similar in appearance to a military one, the stranger pulled his arm up and aimed his firearm squarely at Hugh’s head. As the clicking of a revolving barrel pierced Hugh’s ears, he grabbed his gifted coat and threw it dramatically at the stranger, blocking both of them from each others view.

As a gunshot echoed and the whizzing of a bullet singed the air around Hugh’s right ear, Hugh crouched down and began a run towards the gunmen, intent on tackling the man. Unfortunately, with the coat blocking his view, Hugh merely charged headfirst into the doorframe.

Standing up, rubbing his head in pain, yet again, he glanced out of the room. The stranger was fleeing down the corridor to Hugh’s right. Looking around, Hugh yelled at his students, telling them to stay put. He got a few rolling eyes of annoyance but ignored them.

Tearing after the gunman, Hugh skidded to a halt at a t-intersection and looked for the man. Seeing him down the corridor on his right, Hugh chased him. As he came to a set of double doors that the gunman disappeared behind, Hugh launched himself through and stumbled in surprise.

Falling downwards, Hugh collided with several stone steps. Stone steps that felt distinctly weathered. As he bounced off of each step and caught glimpses of the surroundings, his brain ached with confusion. He was no longer in the school setting. He was now in a massive circular, arena-like room with several rows of stands lining the edge. As he began to comprehend this, he landed with a horrid thud on the black, weathered floor.

Climbing to his feet, he looked towards the centre. Several stone spires just about the height and width of an adult human were jutting out in places, though all were pointed straight upwards. Walking over gingerly Hugh kept lookout for the mysterious gunman.

Resting his back on the most central spire, Hugh closed his eyes slightly and kept his ears at the ready, scanning the sounds of the room for a footstep. Waiting for seemingly nothing, Hugh nearly lost his soul as a terrifyingly evil hiss greeted his attentive ears.

“Behind you.”

Hugh jumped forwards and spun around just in time as running footsteps were heard as the gunman thrust his arm through the rock spire causing debris and dust to scatter but leaving the man’s arm miraculously unscathed.

Hugh stood in disbelief. He had just witnessed something impossible. The man opposite him wasn’t even wearing a pained expression, on the contrary, a crazed look had spread across his face which, due to poor lighting, made his face look pure black with a maniacal snow white grin.

Running way and climbing the rows of seating, Hugh scampered as fast as his arms and legs could move him. A gunshot rang throughout the room and the loud crashing noise of bullet embedding itself into rock burst from the gap between Hugh’s index and middle fingers and Hugh froze. Turning slowly to face the gunman, he whispered in a frightened tone that was not his own, “What do you want with me?”

“Want? You? No… I just like this… Don’t you?”

“What?” said Hugh in a terrified whisper as, in a flurry of wind and movement, the gunman popped into existence before Hugh in an inhuman speed. Looking up, Hugh was greeted by the clicks of a revolving barrel. As the hammer pulled back, Hugh closed his eyes and desperately wished fro some divine intervention. Whether it be in the form of the clichéd “Justintimepoliceforce” or a concrete donkey.

The hammer smashed down releasing a massive echo of pain throughout the classroom. Hugh opened his eyes. His head was lying on his desk and blood was pouring out of his head, coating the tabletop with a crimson puddle. Lifting himself up painfully, he glanced around. Some of the students faces were white with shock. Others just looked confused. One, annoyingly enough, was even trying to force down laughter, rather poorly at that.

As Hugh regained his sense, he looked towards the closest student and said hoarsely, “I think I need some time off.”
And here's character thing. IF you want to post a character.

Now then. Here's a few small points I'd like to get across. Students within school where clothing based on their class which is, in turn, based on their age. Under 18's are lower class and therefore wear lower class clothing. 18 and above is upper class and wear upper class clothing. 18+'s are also entitled to Duel Runner lessons. IF you're character already has a Runner, please point this out in the Bio. IF your character uses any custom cards, please provide a link to a page listing any and all custom cards they use. This can be held on either this site or the YCM Wikia.

Now to finish I'd like to say one thing. Not everyone has a guaranteed usage. Those I do decide to use, their creators will be given a rep. I will also give a rep to anyone who will put effort into the appearance and bio. This means that if you use a picture or have an appearance or bio that is under four lines long, you won't get a bonus rep. Just thought I should say because it's not really your character unless it's your description is it?

Also... I want to reconcile the violence in your heart, I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask, I want to exorcise the demons from your past, I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart.

Okay. I've ignored my sociology homework and instead have written up Chapter 4. Basically, we've entered the Academy! Now, the character app hasn't been used and that makes it lonely but that doesn't matter.

And just as a note, I'd like someone to submit a character. Otherwise, I'd likely get slightly distracted and go into too much detail about people who are essentially character's of the day. I did it in my GCSE work and it annoyed the hell out of me despite the work receiving near perfect marks.

'Nother Character

Name: Lan Marsh

Age: 16

Student, Staff or other: Student

Appearance outside of school: Outside of school Lan wears a dark green longsleeve shirt that's sleeves are an inch to big for his arms. He also wears a green-bluish scarf no matter how cold or how warm it is. He has light brown cargo pants. Lan's somewhat long and messy hair is a greenish-yellow color and he puts his square glasses in his hair(He doesn't need his glasses unless he's in a class that involves reading a board).

Bio and Personality: As a single child with parents hardly ever home, he found it hard to talk with anyone. Throughout his life, he is forced to keep his hair a little long by his lovely overbearing but awfully narcissistic mom who sees her young self in him. He still hadn't gotten over his timidness. That adding to the fact that he really does look like his mom in her elementary days results to him always being considered as part of the female student population (in short, boy whose friends are all girls) because of that, he is always ostracized by his male classmates. After he turned 10, they moved to another town and he meets Virgil and they become best friends!(Although he's still teaswed by other boys for looking like a girl) With Virgil as his best friend, he manages to get over his timidness and finally becomes more fun and talkative earning more friends in the process. By 11, he'd already created a bad reputation of skipping classes <coughbadinfluencecough> but he's still being capable of maintaining a good grade.

Personality Bits I Couldn't Fit in the Bio: Lan is a natural born optimist and is very kind. He always puts his needs second to the needs of others, especially his friends. He is very expressive, often naively stating his mind, and he's very, VERY, VERY, VERY, energetic.

Deck Type : Naturia(Main/Last Resort), Frog(Secondary), Plant Beatdown(Tournament),

Good, Bad or Neutral (Optional): Good

Lan's going in as well. I'll be writing up the next few chapters over the next couple of days. Could you send whatever "Blackice" cards you have. I want to throw them into a duel soon. And just so people know, the next three chapters will involve duels. The semifinals and finals of the classroom tournament. Hoorah for the classroom tournament!
