Its based on the star the wise men followed to get to the stable. btw: advent actually starts 4 sundays before christmas, many people think it starts on the 1st of dec because of those rubbish advent calendars which start on the 1st of dec because the companies can't be bothered to change them every year, personally I think christmas has become too commercial.
