Plz explain your answer in a post, The topic question arose from a co-host in an RP of mine, He believes there shouldn't be a main character but I think there should be, so I'd like to get some feedback on what you'se think

Some points to consider:

Yes for Main Character/Protagonist/Antagonist
* Allows the balance of an RP as knowledge is known that not everyone can win all the time
* limitations are set on characters, allowing the lessening of Godmodding
* Allows for a more suspensful RP as higher level antagonists and protaganists are introduced

No for Main Character/Protaganist
* No one character should be treatedhigher then others
* Feuds could arise from wanting main character role
* Everyone deserves an equal role

What's your opinion?

Well.... The player characters as a whole should be the ones who shape the story, while the GMs keep everything in order, and control the wide-scale consequences to the player's actions (and even then sometimes that is not needed). Well, thats what I prefer in RPs anyway. If there ends up being one main protagonist, it's fine as long as the focus stays on the players and their actions. It might even be amusing if two characters (IC) fight over who gets to be the leader of a group.

Also, I don't understand how having a main character allows for balance and limits power. It's not like the main character *has* to be the strongest, after all. Same for antagonists, though having them be powerful is a good way to cause conflict, which is always fun.

You know, if you envy at other people in an RP who have their characters become main, you shouldn't even be in the RPs. I'm quite sure that people in any of your RPs aren't so self-esteemed.

Therefore, I voted yes for everything. Just do it with the first people who came, or whoever came up with a character you like. Does't give you grudges unless they're idiots.

Also, don't make the main character as strong as hell. Make him medicore at fighting at best. Maybe making minor characters stronger can make them balanced.

yea that's the kind of thing we have planned, like at the moment 2 characters are in a rivalry togetehr and they are perceived to be equally strong and second strongest in comparison to the antagonist, however none of them are the main character, the main character is actually weaker at the start and through a bit of the RP, he then improves and defeats the main antagonist with the others help, i like to mainly go by the character's persona, should be "what's better for the RP", not "What's better fro my character", I agree with you for sure

So you can't stand being a sidekick?

I don't mind myself, but I prefer multiple heroes opposed to only one and a bunch of other sidekicks.

It's just better to cater to all the RPers instead of just one.

It depends on the RP. If it's a video game/anime RP with existing character, then of course there would be a main character. In most cases anyway. However, in an original RP, I would say no. A small group of main characters would be okay though.

As for a villain... Yes, it's good to have a main villain. I would completely agree on that one.
