Useless battles

What was the most pointless battle in know history (in your opinion) and why?

I mean by that a huge number of deaths for little or no land gained or land lost.

In my opinion it's the battle of the Somme. 620 000 were killed for the English and French to gain 12 Km of land at the deepest point. And it was all due to one man's mistakes.

I'm going to go with "Just about anything in WWI that devolved into a trench stalemate".

So pretty much everything then...

Surprised nobody mentioned the Trogan War yet.

I was about to actually. 10 god damn years in Troy just so Menelaus could get his wife (who hated him in the first place) back from Perris (Who Helen freaking loved). In fact, she for the most part left voluntarily, Perris didn't drag her away, she actually liked the guy. The whole war basically happened because a woman had an opinion. And the part I never got about the war was that it went on for 10 years, but for some reason neither side ran out of soldiers.

Totally opinionated debate, with no clear "for" and "against" and too many tangible results. If you want to DISCUSS this, repost it in General. This isn't a debate, it's an opinionated discussion and thus falls directly under General. Locked.
