13- Year Old Atheist is Not Atheist

Well my friend and I were doing a basic walk around the court during P.E. and he pulls up out of no where that he is atheist, I was a little stunned because I didn't find him as an atheist but I simply asked him, so what's an atheist. He replies, a person who doesn't believe in God.... Oh brother, I start laughing at him and he calls me a stupid Catholic. Oh did I tell you that he is very immature and what not... So basically this guy is an atheist because he finds it awesome to be atheist. Idiot child is idiot. Anyways discuss how stupid and mental this child is people you know turn something serious into a "fad" and finds it cool to be in that "fad".

There's this one religious girl at my school who seems to think it's cool to believe in fairy tales like that, but generally most people just think she's insane. Seriously, who believes in that rubbish any more? There's no backing for it, and it's quite frankly silly.

God is a Supreme Being. Most people generalize (or interchange) the two because most Americans only consider God as a Supreme Being, and don't care about the rest. Probably because that's the general perception of atheism. Heck, my Religious Studies teacher described atheism to us as not believing in God. Also, not everyone cares enough for religion to know the exact meaning of the terms I suppose, but I won't go there.

How do you know he didn't say lowercase-g-god, referring to a generic abstract supreme being rather than to the one you worship? You merely assume he said capital-G-God because that's what you would have said.

How can you "find/not find someone as an Atheist"?

You're right in saying that serious stuff shouldn't be turned into a fad but what if he's plain simply an Atheist, not because it's awesome but because that's what he thinks? I mean, it's his own right no?

 

Anyway I underlined all the stuff that I found stupid. Yeah that "an Atheist doesn't believe in "god"" stuff is a typical reaction (yes no matter if it's with a capital "g" or not), but people say it either because it's correct and shorter, or because they think about conservative, close-minded Catholicism first when they hear "religion".

 

But I'd be interested to know what makes a person look or seem like an Atheist and what doesn't...

Most things are pointless and don't drive the human race forward, and yet people use/do/has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like them, starting with the computer (unless it's for a job, but most of us hanging around YCM aren't really doing that :lol: ). Not when the main effect is causing harm like with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, but as long as it doesn't hurt anyone...

I used to believe in God, yes, but as I grew older, me personally, started to realise how unbelievable the whole 'Supreme Beings' thing was.

Now I have nothing against those who do believe in all that stuff, but I just find it silly.

Let's say one problem is that in some places there's much of a black-and-white division.

 

For a while I thought too that I was an Atheist since I don't go to church, don't agree with some things mentioned in some scriptures or with some of the traditional meanings. And obviously if you don't go to church, admit the existence of evolution and the dinosaurs, you MUST be an Atheist, right? Of course I could've been one but I'm not.

 

But that said, it's still not a fad in most cases and shouldn't be called one.:/ Just, in some places, you're more or less pushed to be either an Atheist or a conversative Christian or terrorist, woman-degradating Muslim.

I guess no one cares, but I don't really get the whole "being a Christian = going to church" thing. There are less and less people going to church or formally being part of a church/organized religion. But funnily, not a decreasing number of people considering themselves as such. There are a lot of books about religion shifting to private religiosity (it's just a theory and can be rectified or countered easily, but it's pretty interesting. Or at least better than the "we still live in Medieval times" theory).

 

(On a sidenote, did someone else have to look up Sunday school?:S)

Funnily enough I'm regularly "force-fed" with Atheism in a family I go to a lot so it's clearly not just happening among religious people. But I learned to just nod about everything.:/

This is basically me as well. Except I'm like to only atheist in my town except for a few people. On top of that, I grew up around religion. After contemplating for, like, ever. I came to the conclusion that there is no higher being. If there is, he is an ass. <_<

If they "intently" read the Bible, I can't imagine them going against the religion unless they're in an environment where many people make fun of their religion. If they don't like the religion they've been forced-fed, they probably think it's cool to go against it, fad or not.

 

Silly bands are serious business. Unfortunately, it was a failing serious business. At the beginning of the year, everyone had them. Now, I don't see a single person with a silly band.

He is Atheist to make it clear he pronounced that he's an atheist out loud. His immature personality makes him call me a " stupid Catholic" and I laughed at him. Again his horrible personality and the fact that he says he is an atheist led me to the suggestion thinking that he finds it as a fad.
