This is arguably my most ambitious project yet: a whole new subtype. I'm a big fan of milling, as my Malicious Software set will attest. So I wanted to make a monster that gets rid of cards in your opponent's Deck instead of inflicting Battle Damage during battle. Here's what I had in mind:

Obviously, such a list of rules couldn't possibly fit on a card and still allow room for other effects. A new subtype is necessary. Hence my latest creation: the [i]Dissolver[/i] subtype. Essentially, they get rid of cards in your opponent's deck when they destroy a monster, and get rid of cards in your own deck when destroyed in battle. Yes, I know that Iron Chains do this sort of thing already. If anything, you could add these into an Iron Chain deck (or vice-versa).

So far, I've made at least 1 for each Attribute, with most of them being DARK. Next, I'll try to make at least 1 for each Type. After that...well, who knows?

This monster cannot be Normal Summoned or Set unless "Endless Nuclear Winter" is on the field. This card can only be Special Summoned by its own effect. This card is also treated as a Zombie-Type monster, and as a LIGHT and DARK monster [unless they're already LIGHT or DARK, then it's just "and as a LIGHT/DARK monster]. The pic was the best I could find; you don't see soldiers sitting around in a chemical haze a whole lot, now do you?

Anyway, the ATK drop is meant to be a [i]drawback[/i]; it's supposed to decrease the ATK of [i]your[/i] monsters to the right and left of this monster. Perhaps I should have clarified that.

What did you think of the Dissolvent subtype idea as a whole?

i see.... it bypasses battle all together, might be a bit overpowered by doing so though

i see advantages like no mirror force, no swords of revealing light, just to name a few, though what happens when a face down card is selected? or is that its weakness? cuz.... if its face down, you can't really tell if the DEF is low enough to beat it

the bypass is interesting, though im not sure if the mill effect would be good on all cards of a subtype.... maybe some cards can say "instead of discarding a card to the grave, draw a card" or "Add a counter to another card instead of discarding a card" or "special summon a level 1 card from the grave instead of discarding a card" ...... or "as a dissolve effect"

then you can have some diversity, just a thought

Consider that a balancing factor. I actually wasn't quite sure how handle it, so I decided not to handle it at all and limit its effectiveness to face-up monsters.

I intend the monsters to have effects along with the normal rules. I haven't made more yet, though, so thanks for the idea.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to make their own, just follow these steps:

[i][b]1.Design the card as normal, except without the image and Monster Type.
2.In Monster Type, add “[Standard Type] / Dissolvent”
3.Copy and paste the card from the YCM interface to GIMP.
4.Cut and paste the card's image into the card image area.
5.(The tough part) Select the main colored portion of the card. The easiest method is to use Rectangular Select for wide areas and Fuzzy select for details.
6.Colorize the selected areas using the following values:
Main body of card: Hue 75, Saturation 100, Lightness 0
Text area: Hue 75, Saturation 50, Lightness 0
7.Upload to Photobucket, then post by copying IMG code into post.[/b][/i]

It's time-consuming, but it allows the text and font to remain standard. The only real change is the color of the card.

I guess I'm trying to start out conservatively effect-wise. Once I develop this better, you might see more original effects. I'll see if I can combine this with Fusion or Ritual Monsters later on. For now, I'll stick with simple things till I can figure out a good balance between their milling attacks and actual effects. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Here's another Dissolvent. I decided to make a Fusion that also follows Dissolvent rules, as well as a monster that has exceptions to those rules, allowing for more variety. To that end, I added a new rule: [b][i]If a monster has an effect that changes the Dissolvent rules, the original Dissolvent rules are referred to as the card's "Dissolver Effect", and the exceptions/changes are printed on the card.[/i][/b] Here's the implementation of this new rule.

Hmm...good point. At first I thought ANY FIRE monster, but now that I think about it, dusting your opponent's "Horus Black Flame Dragon LV 8" with a 1700-ATK monster and then milling their deck seems pretty OP'd. I'll limit it to Lvl 5-6 or less, as I'm not quite sure how many people use purely Pyros. Thanks for the advice.

It'll take a bit to make the changes, as I need to remake the card, then re-color the template all over again. It's inefficient, but I'm a stickler for tradition, as anyone who has read my OCG can attest...
