So like, i'm afraid to tell the world that i play yu-gi-oh. LOL , My friends and i went to the mall, and one of my friends noticed me staring at the card shop and asked me ,
'Anhtuan, you like yu-gi-oh ?' and i was trying to hide the fact that i do. LOL i said 'nahh, i was staring at this one girl in the store'. i don't know. I'm scared to admit the fact that i play, collect, and trade yugioh cards. \: it's been bothering me for quite some time now.

Just before I respond, just know that I give practical advice, not cheesy "be yourself; your friends have to accept you for who you are" advice.

I've been in the same situation as you for two years, because as a student two months away from entering college, it seems really nerdy and childish to competitively play Pokemon, let alone play Pokemon at all. I can understand where you are coming from, and while Yugioh used to be popular in like middle school, it's not something you'd want to openly admit to friends, family, girlfriends, and the like.

That being said, I also have a bunch of other talents that people find extraneous and nerdy, like solving Rubik's Cubes and making origami (apparently frowned upon...?), and I've got my friends to accept those by challenging them. "Oh, here, why don't you try to solve this?" The second they say no, just verbally attack (like, diplomatically) them for being ignorant. Trust me, they'll eventually give in. When they fail to complete the task at hand, I think at that point they truly understand that talents that seem frivolous take skill.

My friend saw I had Shoddy Battle on my computer and asked why I still play Pokemon, being seventeen years old. I didn't even respond to his retarded question, signed on, and placed him on a leaderboard match with my own team. I told him to click buttons and play. Needless to say, he lost 6-0. Mind you, this doesn't really change everyone's minds. Some people are just so damn ignorant that watching themselves fail doesn't click anything in their brain.

I would at least make an honest effort to keep it a secret, because the less you have to defend yourself the better, but in case they do find out, download YVD or one of those shitty simulators and watch them fail terribly. They may not be accepting of your nerdy talents, but if they break off friendship with you because you play Yugioh, they aren't friends; they're dicks.

I don't think it matters if they know or not. You could do what Dark said, or you could just ignore them ripping on you which they will probably do if they find out you play yugioh. I had to deal with a couple of friends ripping on me for like a week, but they got over it. I'm pretty sure the same thing would happen, then there would be a crack at you every month or so. They might think you're a geek, but whatever, you're still you and you won't have to hide anything from them anymore.

He's a Jackass for lying to his friends because he was embarresed! Do what Dark said I guess, challenge them.

I know that I would never lie about playing pokemon or Yugioh, once I was sitting with my friends at lunch, and I was telling them about how funny the description for Solar Beam in Gen II is, and some jerks over a few seats down overheard me and said "Heh what are you talking abot, Pokemon" in a jerkish tone, I answered, "Yeah, I play pokemon, I also play Yugioh, you got a problem with that?"
He doesn't talk to us anymore, still laughs at us though, not like I care.

I just can't admit it infront of people. its just awkward . And btw, i was at the mall with my Girlfriend and a few of her friends. -.- so of course i'm going to admit it.

I stopped playing when Yugioh was looked down on in 6th grade. Plus it just wasn't fun for me anymore :/

But all my friends knew I played it, they didn't care. Even the ones that thought it was stupid (but then again that was when we were 11).

i used to be in this situation alot, my method was to challenge them, once i had won i would just tell them i had a talent for the game so why would i not play? at that point they get and don't care whether i play the game or not.

That is a good idea, maybe I should start bringing an extra deck when I actually do bring one to school to play my friends in DS

My friends play magic the gathering and love pokemon. Me on the other hand...Yeah, I don't. I do play Yu-Gi-Oh though and they make references about the anime of how it's done all over dramatically. I don't hide that I play but they have absolutely no interest in it and go back to MtG. I'm not too into the game but I've played with them about three times. 2/3 I won and it was with a supposedly crappy deck. My best friend know I play and they play with me every so often. Well more he forces me to play. I also don't hide my MMO addiction. In fact I've managed to find a game that one of my friend's sister liked. YCM is what I keep secret though. Except of course from my best friend who has an account here.
