Shantaniqua Scott, 18, is accused of two counts of injury to a child with serious bodily injury. If convicted, she could be sentenced to life in prison.

The baby was later released from the hospital in stable condition. He's now in foster care.
Doctors at Cook Childrens Medical Center testified they put the baby in a room with a hidden camera because they suspected he was a victim of child abuse.
The child arrived at the hospital in July after he had stopped breathing.

At first, doctors thought he suffered from severe reflux -- when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. The baby underwent surgery to correct the condition.
But a day or two later, he mysteriously stopped breathing again, Dr. Sami Hadeed testified.
Hadeed, a child lung specialist, said he was shocked at what he saw when he reviewed the surveillance video.
The video shows Scott placing a blanket over the baby's face for more than 20 seconds. A nurse briefly enters the room. Scott paces the floor and appears to check her cell phone.

The courtroom watched in absolute silence during what happened next.
The camera captured Scott covering her baby's face with her bare hand. At first, the baby kicks and fights back.
By the time she removes her hand one minute and 14 seconds later, the baby appears limp.
Seconds later, with alarms indicating the baby had stopped breathing going off, doctors and nurses rush in to resuscitate him.
Hadeed testified that the baby would have died had they not been there to help.
"I still get emotional," Hadeed told the jury. "I get night sweats when I think about it. I take care of the sickest of the sick. His life was being put in danger by someone who was supposed to take care of him."

Earlier Wednesday, jurors heard an audio tape of Scott's confession to Fort Worth detective Dennis Hutchins.
On the tape, Scott admitted to smothering her baby.
She said it was hard being a teenage mother, complained that the baby's father didn't help and added that she didn't want to deal with the stress anymore.
Doctors said it's not known if the child will have any lasting injuries from the lack of oxygen.
At one point under cross examination, Scott's attorney, David Jones asked Hadeed, "Was there an actual injury he suffered?"
"He suffered a significant lack of oxygen," the doctor answered. "It almost killed him."
Prosecutors in the courtroom of Tarrant County District Judge Scott Wisch rested their case late Wednesday.[/quote]

Basically: Cameras were set up around a room w/ the mother and baby only to show the mother smothering the baby. There is a video of her smothering the baby off the news but I would strongly advise for someone who knows they would get deeply upset, offended and anything as such to not watch as the video is real.

this is why abortion exsists, for these kind of crazy b******s who "don't want to hande the stress". if you don't want to deal with the child give up for adoption and give it to people who can't have children.

instead they think "This things annoying, i'll throw it out" i'm being completely serious when i say let just lock all parent like that in bin for the rest of their lifes and see how they like it.

and this is a completely serious suggestion, we tattoo a serial number on every new born baby (in the arm pit, that way it isn't visible), that way we know who to punish when people do this kind of s***.

Maybe she thought she could handle a baby? We don't know. I'm not supporting this as anyone who kills their own child deserves to be hung, but she could have had a baby for the right reasons.

The idea of killing a baby inside of them is VERY unpopular with girls.

Stupid Women....Although by the sounds of it this is post-natal depression it is very common in women who have suffered in a past experience, being she was abuse as a child or whatever.

I'm not for one minute condoning it but, there may be more to this than just suffocating a baby because she is a stupid f***. People with PND don't know they have it and don't realise what they are doing. If they ever recover its like a hole in there memory which may or may not come back.

I don't think so. It is far more likely that she has Munchausen by proxy syndrome given by her actions. I would go into detail but I've had hardly any sleep and I really don't want to.

Well Your in luck because I too know what that is, Although I'm 16, so I shouldn't know anything about that stuff.... But Alas, I Also can't be bothered to go into detail.

Wow, I thought for a second this the Casey Antony thing. But this has... blown my mind... :blink:

I mean yes parenthood is stressful at the best of times, let alone for a single teenage mother. But there are plenty of alternatives to murder.

Hope the kid pulls through and doesn't have lifelong scars/disabilities because of his mothers actions. That would be the worst thing if the lack of oxygen stunted his brain development and screwed him for life.

I think that there should be a criminal program. Whatever crime they committed, they have to suffer themselves.

And there's always the option of putting him up for adoption. Really the mom is just a freak. She said she didn't want to handle being a teen mom. If that were true she would've done one of the above. I'm glad people like her are sent to jail for life.
