I guess is that Equestria was founded by the "spartans" as you say, and the ponies that were left behind headed to the new land in order for a better future. Some that preferred monarchy under Celestia established themselves in Canterlot, while the other ponies set off to live in a new place in Equestria. Some of us don't have ponies picked. (I would like to be Big Macintosh/Soarin'/Braeburn until Rainbow Dash becomes available.) 3.
