Applejack is as athletic as RD and Fluttershy is a pegasus ponyand she was RD's childhood friend so it makes sense. And reading a WonderboltsxRainbow Dash clopfic really enhanced my love for RD. So the same could be said for Zebras, right? Also, Ponyville doesn't have defining traits like being super western or overly sophisticated.
