Synchro's are a new type of card that was added in 5D's, as far as I know. I never really followed the anime...

Tuner's were also added, and they are necessary for Synchro use.

Anyway, it works like this.

Let's say there is a Level 6 Synchro. In the card's effect, it reads "1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters"

This means, from the field, you would sacrifice the Tuner and however many monsters whose level equal the level of the Synchro. For example, a Level 3 Tuner and a Level 3 Monster.

Some Synchros need special Tuners or a special archetype to be Summoned from your extra deck.

Synchros are considered a Special Summon.

What do they do? Well, they are like Effect monsters except typically with more powerful effects and stats. Go ahead and get creative with the effects.

That's how I'd explain them.
