"Huh. The Originals and the clones are fighting. This could get interesting!"

*Ash get shot and turned to stone*

"Wh-wha?"

*Pikachu starts to cry*

I don't remember whether that made me cry or not, but I was NEVER able to watch the anime episode where Pikachu (for a few minutes) appears to leave Ash to join a group of wild Pikachu without crying as a kid.

You obviously only watch TV shows that you are fond of. Do the characters, plot lines, twists and so on easily relate to you compared with people outside of the show? Just trying to get a grip on this.

Just to clarify, not all TV shows that I watch make me cry - but there are certainly some that do.

The problem with real life is that your information is very limited. You only see people while you're around them. And you only see how they act while you're in the room, not while you're out of earshot. And you only see how they act in the social situations in which you interact with them. And you only hear what they're willing to say to you on the topics with which you speak with them. And even if you know them, you may not know all the people they are talking about, so any nuances of those relationships are lost. Mix in a bit of shyness and it becomes hard to get close enough to other people to understand them. Without understanding, there is no emotional investment. Without emotional investment, there is no crying. And since I'm somewhat stoic, my bar for emotional investment is quite high.

With fiction, however, that's not an obstacle, because the writer can show you everything of importance. The reader has full information available, which allows full understanding, which allows me to actually care - and thus, if the story is a good one, to cry.

(The other possible explanation is I'm just a jerk sociopath, as evidenced by every other post I've made on this site.)
