Now many people overlook Gold Rat at first making comments about how 3 level 1s is hard to do or that the effect is weak but Gold Rat, and the entire Rat archetype have suddenly become a viable option to use today, maybe not at a YCS tournament but for a nice local tournament. What makes this possible? The two cards that are defining this format. Rescue Rabbit and Tour Guide from the Underworld. A combination of these two monsters makes normal monsters easy to pull out of the deck and believe it or not, Rats have amazing synergy with these cards as you will soon find out. Before we can go on I must mention in passing Tri-Wight Zone which as made Gold Rat possible as you will soon find out.

Now, onto the main monsters of the archtype. Rats have first their very own recruiter, the well known Giant Rat. This card is way too slow for the deck. Your goal for this deck should be to spam monsters with Rabbit and TGU so really wasting deckspace on a monster Rabbit can't search that will never be useful is silly. Another bad Rat is Wind-Up Rat which has 0 synergy so I wont even talk about it.

Next is a card any Gold Rat build should max out on. Volcanic Rat. This is a vanilla and so it is searchable via Rescue Rabbit but you will rarely being doing anything with VR right when you summon it unless you pull off some interesting combo using a Leviair from the previous turn to get the Rabbit then normal summon the third Rat to make your Gold Rat. This is possible but normally you will be using the Rabbit this turn to thin your deck sending double V-Rat to the Graveyard setting up a Tri-Wight play.

Moving upwards in terms of levels you now have the Armored Rat which is the level three of the deck. This card effectively turns your Rescue Rabbit into a level 3 exceed monster. This can be immensely useful for making a Leviair which next turn will revive the Rabbit or simply into something like Zenmaines which can be great for defensive or offensive plays. Another amazing card to max out.

The final rat I suggest you play is Prevent Rat. At 2000 defence, this is a good card to choose to play first turn because something like TKRO cannot run over it. It also has synergy with Rabbit because of course you can use Rabbit to grab 2 of them opening a number of exceed options for you. The first is the Daigusto Emeral which will allow you to revive a normal Rat from your graveyard, or restock your deck for more Rabbit plays. It also opens the door to a Lavalval chain play which would let you stack your deck with a TGU or Rabbit on top or it would let you dump a Volcanic Rat to the graveyard setting up a Tri-Wight Zone play.

Then there is your boss in a way, Number 56: Gold Rat. Now this is a very interesting creature. The first thing to observe here is that Gold Rat can easily be summoned in this deck. That means I don't want to hear any of that discussion here. Now look at this effect. He basically let's you take a dead card in hand and replace it. Think of the options this allows. You can take a dead normal monster and place it back in your deck meaning you can use Rabbit on it. Gold Rat can recycle basically any other card you don't want at the time making it so useful.
