My first shot at a fakemon

No, for something like spriting, paint is pretty much as much as you need. Photoshoph I want to say is over kill, but normally that means it gets the job done. Photoshop is a horrible program to use for things like fakemon and spriting. I suppose if you were making a non sprite fakemon, photoshop would be best, but I'm guessing your going for in game type graphics. Paint will work just find. Now of course one needs to know how to use paint though to get the job done.

 

Your fakemon lacks a lot of things. By the looks of it you found the line tool, and how to change colors. I'm under an assumption that its suppose to be a dragon, but someone could tell me its a goat and I wouldn't be able to deny that claim. Shading would be a nice touch, but for you I suggest you work on shape, form, and color choice first. You seem to have a long way to go, I suggest finding better detailed tutorials on the internet on how to make sprites.
