DARKPLANT RISING
Kay, TC, let me tell you a little secret. [s]I killed Mufasa[/s] ragnarok1945 is terrible at the game, and you shouldn't really listen to him. TBH, I would never run this. First of all, something you've got to keep in mind is the fact that the Level 8 slot for Synchros is already crammed-up. Scrap and Stardust Dragon are the best of them, and Crimson Blader is the definite option if you've got a 3rd Level 8 slot. A rather perplexing problem, yes, and the reason why I generally frown at the idea of making a Level 8 Synchro, unless I've got a really unique and competitive idea. Most of the time, my Synchros are Level 2 to 7, or 10. Anyhow, to make a usable Level 8 Synchro, it would have to be better than at least 1 of the above three (and yeah, almost no decks can afford space for 4 Level 8 Synchros). Let's look at the card. LIGHT Machine-Type When this card is Synchro Summoned: dettach all the Xyz Material Monsters attached to Xyz Monsters on the field. You take 300 damage for each Xyz Material Monster dettached by this effect. When this card attacks a Xyz Monster: halve the monster's ATK until the end of the Damage Step. 2600/1500 I personally think that there's nothing as stupid as caring a s*** about Official Card Grammar, as long as the card isn't written in Ancient Egyptian, so I'm not going to waste my time pointing out anything about them. As for usability: First off, detaching Xyz Materials doesn't really count as an anti-Xyz effect most of the time. Given most of the opponent's monsters that get hit by this effect will be crushed by this thing's attack during the turn either way, the only Xyz Monsters that actually get a severe blow from this effect are those which can activate their effects during the opponent's turn. Listing them: Tinplate Archduke, The Sacred Pleiades, Evolzar Dolkka, Evolzar Laggia, Evolzar Solda, Lavalval Ignis, Mira the Giant Star, No.12 Crimson Shadow Armor Ninja, No.25 Fullmetal Photoglide Focus Force, No. 39 Utopia, No.96 Black Mist, Photon Streak Bouncer, Shineelf, Steelswarm Roach, The Sacred Beehive, The Sacred Omega, Verz Nightmare, Verz Thanatos, Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, Gachi Gachi Gantetsu, and Wind-Up Zenmaines. That seems quite a lot, but some, like Tinplace Archduke, are toilet paper, so it doesn’t really count as a merit (For instance, being able to defeat Battle Ox doesn’t make La Jinn any good). Others in the list, like Dolkka and Roach, can kill this Golem with a yawn. Pleiades basically laughes at this as it chains its effect and sends the Golem back into the Extra. Taking out the crappy ones, the anti-anti-xyz, and free-chains, that leaves only No. 39 Utopia, No.96 Black Mist, The Sacred Beehive, Gachi Gachi Gantetsu, and Wind-Up Zenmaines (I negged Zenmaity because its only real use is hand rape). Of these, the only two cases in which this “om-nom-nom-xyz-material” eff actually has a good use are with Gachi and Zenmaines. Why? Because in the cases with the other 3, it’s simply better to SCRAP’EM!! But it just so happens that, if you can summon a Level 8 Synchro, chances are you’d also be able to go for Level 6’s. And the Level 6 slot includes Brionac, which basically eats the two aforementioned solid walls for breakfast. Before people say it, yes, this card can kill Acid Golem. But most of the time the opponent would have something up his sleeve before he summons it. Perhaps, some back-up S/T. More likely, he was going for an end-gamer and the duel ended on the turn Acid Golem was summoned. And of course, if that was the case, this would be a bit too late to summon. And despite all this, this card’s also somehow got a self-burn effect. How was that ever needed? Now onto the second eff. Altering ATK certainly does result in LIFE advantage, but the gameplay moves more around CARD advantage. And sadly, simply altering ATK doesn’t result in card advantage unless you’re using, say, Gradius Spaceships or Dark Scorpions, OR, the ATK altering resulted in an inversion of win and lose (the reason Limiter Removal is often played in Machine decks). In this card’s case, think more around the second case. The problem is, there are only 18 Xyz Monsters with equal to or less than 2600 ATK, and Scrap Dragon can beat all of them in a much, much better fashion than this. Doesn’t that make this seem sorta pointless a card? Right now, sadly, this is far from usable. In fact Colossal Fighter and Thoughtruler Archfiend are much better choices. Even if released, this would be 6th in the line. And 6 slots for Level 8 Synchros? That’s, well, sorta impossible. tl;dr this card is so terribly underpowered that it’s unusable right now.
Now, now, now, I don’t go around saying just “THIS CARD SUCKS BECAUSE THIS, AND THAT, AND YEAH, LET ME SAY IT AGAIN, THIS CARD SUCKS”. Yes, of course I say that too, but I also happen to go around saying “BY THE WAY, I THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DO THIS, AND THAT, AND THEN IT’D BE BETTER WOO HOO HIP HIP HORRAY NOW LICK MY FEET DAMNED SLAVE”. Saying that I sound like a colossal prick, but I think I’m more helpful than someone with the avi of Mai and Jounouchi. So, now, let’s think about why this is so bad. -Level 8 Synchro slots are crammed up, and this has to be hella overpowered to be used. That doesn’t encourage good card making. Neither is it fun. -This card works amazingly with seemingly divine effectiveness on two cards. Except, Brionac works even better with them. -The last effect doesn’t help much either. So, a simple way to fix them and make this a good Synchro that isn’t broken like Inzektor Hornet or Zenmaity or Tour Guide or Tengu. Make it non-Level 8. How you’re going to balance it really depends on what level you make it, but I don’t recommend 5 or 6 given there’s good stuff there already. Even though Trish has been confirmed to be banned in March, Mist Wurm will just replace it. I’d rather recommend Level 7 if you’re going to remake this. But regardless of level, you should also change two other things – One, making the “anti-Xyz element” stronger, and two, making the last effect better. For instance, if you’re going for Level 7, there are several possibilities off the top of my head: -Make its ATK 2500 or something, and its effects “While this thing’s face-up, your opponent can’t activate effs of Xyz, umadbro lol” and “When this card attacks an Xyz, make its ATK 0 like a boss”. Basically, made to just kill Xyz. -Or, alternatively, its ATK 1500, and its effs “When summoned, kill all face-up Xyz lol” and “Halve the ATK of anything this battles during the dmg step”. This is probably better than the above version, given the fact it’s way more versatile. Both are my ideas of a good Level 7 Synchro that isn’t overpowered at all. Just my ideas, so you don’t have to take them all in. You can kick them and go for completely different ideas, and if they’re nicer, I’d like that too. But that’s all from me. Hope I helped. And why the hell am I writing something as long as this to rate a single card.
