It's apparently based off a legend of a dog that would always return to it's owner, (Hachiko).
It does also have different variants:
Mad Dog of Darkness, Mecha Dog Marron and Skull Dog Marron.
Actually, thinking about it, Skull Dog Marron is kind of sad.
