Yu-Gi-Oh: The Final Edge Tournament [update: Chapter 1 added]

I figured that I may as well put an interesting fanfic together. So, I'll put up my starting ideas here. I'm still developing characters, but I have some decks constructed for now.

[spoiler=Plot]The Edge Colosseum has been holding tournaments for as long as anyone in the area can remember. But when the colosseum releases a notice that they're holding their final tournament, word reaches out to many duelists far and wide.

Everyone is excited about the level of competition that's going to be present, but fails to give any notice as to why the famous tournament location is suddenly going to shut down after this function.

For a particular group of duelists, The Edge Colosseum holds a lot of fond memories of their dueling careers. The story's main focus is the group's struggles to find out the hidden past of the Colosseum they've come to know as their hangout, and a deepening sense of friendship between them.

Of course, there will be grand amounts of dueling to transition the story from one part to another, since I've made a decent attempt at mixing existing decktypes (with custom cards) with completely custom decks.

Will this be a fanfic that emphasizes creative dueling, or storyline? You be the judge. This is the first fanfic I've created of my own design, and I honestly don't know what direction I'm going to take it in. >_>

Characters:

[spoiler=Alex]

Age: 17

Alex has been dueling at the Colosseum ever since his career began. He obtained his first pack of cards at the Colosseum, and has gained knowledge and insight towards dueling throughout the years. He is open-minded and generally full of enthusiasm. He treats situations with a positive attitude, and is well-liked by most other duelists for his kind nature.

Vince has been playing the game before he came to the Colosseum, and started off as a very skilled player. He originally had little respect for duelists that he could easily defeat, feeling that his time was merely being wasted; however, the skill of his opponents began to grow, and he realized that one of the best ways to improve yourself is to accept defeat and learn from your mistakes. He now has a better perspective on keeping an open mind, but still prefers to keep to himself. He comes across as very shy, but in reality is very tactical in his playstyle.

[spoiler=Tony]

Age: 17

Tony is recently new to the Colosseum, having spent most of his time dueling at other facilities, most notably the Duel Arena, a rival location to the Colosseum. He is generally disliked by the other duelists, as many of them believe that the Arena is the main reason that the Colosseum is shutting down. Tony has entered the tournament in support of the Duel Arena, wanting to show the Colosseum duelists that where he duels has the superior duelists. [spoiler=Cliff]

Age: 16

Cliff is a fairly experienced duelist who hasn't done much dueling at the Colosseum. He used to spend most of his time dueling his friends, before they had to move away to college. Cliff has taken the experiences with his friends to strengthen his Deck, and feels prepared to take on anyone at the Colosseum. He comes across as shy, because he is unfamiliar with just about everyone at the Colosseum. He gets very in-character when dueling, very wrapped up when he's on a roll.

[spoiler=Paul]

Age: 17

Paul has been dueling at the Colosseum for as long as most people, but sees dueling differently. He has played with a very offensive deck for a while, but saw the movement towards speed that the game has generally taken, so he took a step in reverse. He now runs a deck that focuses on dwindling away at the opponent's Life Points, and maintains an attitude that suits his deck. His attitude remains very clear and calm as he duels solely to frustrate his opponent. He has joined this tournament to show everyone what a little patience can do for any duelist, confident that he is going to win.

[spoiler=Darrell]

Age: 18

Darrell is another duelist who started his dueling at the Duel Arena, with a very unstable deck. He became an incredibly strong duelist with a Deck that never established a theme. He has now come to the Colosseum to show off his skills, as he believes that luck will enable him to win in any situation. He can be very strange at times, but normally uses his head in tough situations. He has been accused by many of his friends to have the intrisnic ability to "be able to pull the right card at the right time" to win duels.

8/Fiend/Effect

This card cannot be Special Summoned. While this card is face-up, any cards sent to the Graveyard are turned face-down. Cards that are face-down in the Graveyard cannot be moved from the Graveyard by another card's effect. You can only have 1 "Fairy of the Phoenix Blade" monster on your side of the field. When this card destroys a monster by battle, discard the top 3 cards of your Deck. Inflict damage to your opponent equal to half of the ATK of 1 monster discarded by this card's effect.

2600/2500

Alpha and Omega - WATER

7/Aqua/Effect

When your opponent activates a Spell or Trap Card, you can Tribute 1 monster to Special Summon this card. If your opponent activated a Trap Card, this card is treated as a FIRE Pyro-type monster, and its ATK and DEF are switched.

1300/1100

For the Sake of Revenge – Quickplay Spell

Activate this card when you take Battle Damage from an opponent’s monster. The Battle Damage dealt by your first attack that deals Battle Damage to your opponent after this card’s activation is doubled.

An attacking monster loses ATK equal to the amount of Battle Damage it dealt to a player during the End Phase.

Two Minds, One Soul – Equip Spell

Select 1 monster in your Graveyard. Negate the effect(s) of a monster equipped with this card. The equipped monster gains ATK and DEF equal to the selected monster’s original ATK and DEF. Appreciate the offer, but I'm not really accepting characters. Ideas are good, though. I was actually going to have a later character who runs Gladiator Beasts, to help assert the theme of the Colosseum.

I have a base for an eighth character, and once I get his Deck together I'll start chapter one.

Chapter One: To Encounter a Rival

Current Setting: Alex's House, 5 Days Until Tournament

Alex sat with his Deck in front of him, re-arranging cards furiously as he contemplated strategies to himself. He had never felt a need to prepare for tournaments at the Colloseum before now, as it suddenly felt to him that everything was on the line. He wouldn't be coming back to the familiar place after this tournament, and would possibly have to... if worst came to worst... move to Duel Arena. But he wasn't going to start thinking like that. He was moreso focused on the task at hand, constructing his Deck to be the best Deck possible.

He was distracted by a vibration in his jacket pocket, his cell phone suddenly ringing with the familiar beeps of the standard ringtone. Alex set his cards down and reached into his pocket, hastily taking the phone out and opening it. He mechanically spoke, "Hello?"

The voice on the other side was a less bold one, as if he hadn't intended to call, "Hey, is this Alex?"

"Yes."

"Right. Well, um, this is Vince. I've seen you a lot around the Colloseum, and I figured you'd be entering this tournament."

Alex laughed, unsure why Vince sounded so nervous, "Of course! I've heard that those Duel Arena punks are coming to give the Colloseum a powerful farewell, and I have to be there to show them who's boss!"

Vince chuckled a little, taking a gulp as his voice suddenly became clearer, as if Alex's words had felt very true, "Yeah.. yeah. So, would you mind if I came over to play a game or two with you? I can sit here and rearrange cards all I want, but the best way to see how things work is to play, right?"

"Of course! I'm free right now, and I was just about to call to find an opponent! Come on over!"

"Alright, I'll be over."

Vince hung up, picked up his Deck, and made his way out the door, headed out to Alex's house. The sun was out and shining through the town, so Vince travelled light in blue jeans and a dark purple shirt, spikes of long brown hair defining his face. He absentmindedly shuffled his Deck on the way to Alex's house. As he made it about halfway, though, a door to his right suddenly opened with a great force, slamming against the house. A tall boy with a flat top of brown hair and brown eyes grinned towards Vince, who had been startled by the sudden crash.

The boy eyed Vince's cards curiously, reaching into his own pocket, shouting boldly out to the traveler, "Hey you! Where are you headed with those cards?"

Vince spoke calmly back, "I'm headed to a friend's house to practice for the tournament."

"Why bother with your little friends when you have a challenge right here in front of you?" the boy laughed, taking out his own Deck of cards and quickly shuffling them.

Vince raised an eyebrow towards the other, thinking to himself before turning to him, "Alright, if you have to run out of your house just to find people to play, you can't be too great."

The boy laughed once, looking with amazement at Vince, "Can't be too great? You don't know who I am? Ah.. you must be one of those Colosseum players, of course you've never heard of me. The name's Tony, and I'm one of Duel Arena's top duelists!" He walked forward, "I think I'll take you out right here for your ignorance, since I need to warm up for this little tournament!"

Duel: Vince vs. Tony

Vince: I'll make the first move by summoning Darkness Ascendant! Then, I'll set two cards, and end my turn. Now Darkness Ascendant gains a Spell Counter!

Tony: Whatever. Draw! I'll summon Storm Slasher Indigo to your Ascendant's column! Since it has a face-down card behind it, Indigo gains 300 ATK. And now, I set 1 card face-down behind Indigo, so he gains another 300 ATK! Next I activate Zephyr Skies! While my Storm Slasher is in the same column as your monster, he gains 400 ATK during battle! Now with 2700 points, Indigo will tear your Darkness Ascendant to shreds!

Vince: 6800/Tony: 8000

Tony: Then I'll set another card. Your turn!

Vince: Draw. Perfect! I'll put down Summon Spirit, and turn my first face-down card up! Pitch-Black Power Stone! I'll move one Spell Counter to my Summon Spirit, then activate Reasoning! Your call.

Tony: 4, like most monsters.

Vince: Torrential Tribute... hah! Summon Apprentice Magician! With his effect, I can put a third Spell Counter on Summon Spirit! Now I remove 2 to activate its effect! Pick up the top 2 cards of my deck.. too perfect! Summon Dark Magician of Chaos! With his effect, I can recall Reasoning to my hand.

Tony: A whole lot of nothing, if you ask me.

Vince: Well, I'm not asking you. Dark Magician of Chaos, wipe out his Storm Slasher!

Tony: Not today! Activate my face-down card, Mirror Force!

Vince: That just leaves me with Apprentice Magician.. I end my turn.

Tony: As expected. Draw! I'll summon Storm Slasher Cobalt next to Indigo! Then I'll flip my other face-down card up, Icarus Attack! By tributing Cobalt, I can destroy your Apprentice Magician and your face-down card! And now, with 2300 ATK, Indigo attacks you directly!

Vince: 4500/Tony: 8000

Tony: You're not faring too well! Make your move, and try to at least put up a fight!

Vince: Fine. Draw... amazing! Summon Skilled Dark Magician! You're finished now! Activate Reasoning again!

Tony: 4!

Vince: Wrong again, summon Dark Magician!

Tony: ...Great.

Vince: Oh no, the greatness has only begun! With Pitch-Black Power Stone, I can place a second Spell Counter onto Skilled Dark Magician. Next I activate Premature Burial, to bring my Darkness Ascendant back into play!

Vince: 3700/Tony: 8000

Vince: That gives my Skilled Dark Magician his third Spell Counter. Next, I Tribute Skilled Dark Magician to summon a second Dark Magician from my Deck! Dark Magician, wipe out Storm Slasher Indigo!

Vince: 3700/Tony: 7500

Tony: No!

Vince: Dark Magician and Darkness Ascendant, take a swing at him as well!

Vince: 3700/Tony: 3500

Vince: You'll find that once this deck gets to speed, it can take you out in an instant. Darkness Ascendant gains a Spell Counter, and now make your move.

Tony: I shall.. draw! I'll set two cards face-down, then Tribute them with Charity of Continuity to draw 2 new cards! I'll summon Storm Summoner. By discarding Slasher Assault, I can summon Storm Slasher Cobalt from my Graveyard next to Storm Summoner's column, right in front of your Dark Magician! Now my Cobalt's effect can destroy your Magician! Storm Summoner, attack his Darkness Ascendant!

Vince: 3600/Tony: 3500

Tony: That will end my turn.

Vince: Not a very good move. Draw. I'll set one monster face-down, and attack Cobalt with my other Dark Magician!

Vince: 3600/Tony: 2200

Vince: That ends my turn.

Tony: Draw! I'll discard Storm Summoner to use Storm Summoner's effect, to resurrect Cobalt again! Destroy his Dark Magician! Storm Summoner, attack his monster!

Vince: You've activated Old Vindictive Magician's effect, and now your Storm Summoner is destroyed!

Tony: Fine. I've wiped your annoying Dark Magicians off the field, so I'm satisfied. Go.

Vince: Draw. One more go at this, activate Reasoning!

Tony: 4...

Vince: I may lose Magician's Circle and Miracle Restoring, but you do enjoy being wrong. Summon Dark Magician Girl! Her power rises to 2600 with the Dark Magicians in my Graveyard! Attack his Storm Slasher!

Vince: 3600/Tony: 800

Vince: This is your last move. Go!

Tony: Draw. Set 1 monster. Go.

Vince: Draw! Lucky for you, I didn't draw a monster. Wipe out his monster, Dark Magician Girl. End.

Tony: Draw... nothing. I lose this one.

Vince: One more attack, Dark Magician Girl!

Vince: 3600/Tony: 0

Tony sighed and picked up his cards, shaking his head as he returned to his house, "That was a good warm-up. Maybe all of you Colosseum-goers aren't terrible. But I'm not going to take it easy next time."

Vince laughed and watched Tony walk off, putting his Deck away with a satisfied look. He then turned around and headed home, as he opened his cell phone and dialed Alex's number.

Alex picked up the phone, a slightly anxious voice meeting him, "Vince! Where are you?"

Vince laughed as he answered, a new confidence in his voice, "I'm headed back home. To be honest, I'm not in the mood for a duel right now. But just in case you were wondering, I don't think the Duel Arena players are much to worry about." He closed the cell phone, and made his way back home with a new sense of confidence.
