Reserve deputy shoots suspect, thought he was using taser.

Recommended Posts

Same thing happened in LA a while ago. Some cop wanted to apprehend a vagrant and she fired her gun instead of her tazer. The fuzz needs more training, especially with deserve deputies. Either way it should have been a rule of thumb that should have been taught differentiating the two. I remember Steven Segal mentioned something like this in Lawman.

Better training is needed in general and departments need to take more precaution in who they entrust with a badge whether they are reserve or not.

Although, what reserve officers can and can't do probably varies depending on location. For instance, NYPD Auxiliary officers are not allowed to carry firearms on duty.

Chinese and British police on patrol aren't usually armed, and they seem to be safer than police here. Maybe they are doing something right...

The problem is, if you disarm the police in America, they'll be sitting ducks to the bad guys who have guns. They would not be able to defend themselves against an armed and dangerous suspect. Remember, there are a lot of guns in this country. While I do think there are many respectable, law-biding gun owners, there are those who aren't.

If anything, provide better training and better guidelines on what constitutes deadly force.

There's one thing I really dont understand about the entire arrest. What made him even make the decision to use his taser in the first place, since it only happens after Harris is tackled to the ground and is pinned down by atleast one other officer (from what I can gather). Seems like an odd choice to use it at that point considering that the suspect is not capable of putting up any particular resistance, or running.

This is still not mentioning that the torso, the biggest and most effective target for a taser (in terms of actually subduing the target), is being blocked.

Or... you know what, how he's even able to confuse his gun for his taser still boggles my mind aswell, given the gap from where he calls out "Taser" to the actuall shot (meaning there was plenty of time for him to realise he held the wrong weapon), and what model there appears to be on both plus the general design of a taser pistol, unless he seriously is getting incapable of differentiating between the two, in which case keep him as far away as possible from police work, or even guns in general

Please tell me someone will have to answer for getting that guy involved in a sting like this and I sure hope the jury wont let him (the reserve deputy) walk. There's no way Harris' death is justified
