September 2010 Format

Recommended Posts

OK, so the Goat Control phenomenon is pretty interesting and the format is actually pretty fun to play. It was mostly pioneered by veteran players looking for a dose of nostalgia while also being able to play a skillful and interesting mirror match. However, there is a format that I believe to be better than Goat Format in absolutely every way and that format is September 2010 format, particularly when playing the Quickdraw Plant mirror match.

Just for reference, here's the banlist for September 2010:

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/September_2010_Lists_(TCG)

All sets up to and including Starstrike Blast are legal for this format.

So the idea of the deck is to use the Plant engine with cards like Debris Dragon and Quickdraw Synchron to summon Synchro monsters. It is resource and advantage-based and is fairly slow and very skillful, a bit like Goat Control. The basis of the decklist is this:

1-3 Quickdraw Synchron

2-3 Debris Dragon

(generally you want the sum of Debris and Quickdraw to equal 4)

2 Lonefire Blossom

2 Dandylion

1 Glow-Up Bulb

1 Spore

1 Tytannial, Princess of Camellias

3 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter

1 Sangan

1 Card Trooper

2-3 Book of Moon

2-3 Pot of Avarice

1 Foolish Burial

1 Cold Wave

1 Dark Hole

1 Monster Reborn

0-1 Giant Trunade

Some Traps, which most likely include 2 Solemn Warning

The rest is up to you. Most people will choose to run some kind of tribute monster, the most common choice being Caius the Shadow Monarch, which I always run at 2. Light and Darkness Dragon is also fairly common. Other than that, you can run a couple of Duality, most likely a couple of MST, Treeborn Frog or even Volcanic Shells. The Trap lineup can be as heavy or light as you please, with some even opting to run Royal Decrees.

Here's an example list, the build I've been testing:

[spoiler List]

2 Quickdraw Synchron

2 Debris Dragon

2 Dandylion

2 Lonefire Blossom

1 Glow-Up Bulb

1 Spore

3 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter

1 Super-Nimble Mega Hamster

1 Sangan

1 Card Trooper

1 Treeborn Frog

2 Caius the Shadow Monarch

1 Gorz the Emissary of Darkness

1 Tytannial, Princess of Camellias

3 Book of Moon

2 Pot of Avarice

2 Mystical Space Typhoon

1 Foolish Burial

1 Cold Wave

1 Dark Hole

1 Monster Reborn

1 Pot of Duality

2 Solemn Warning

1 Solemn Judgment

2 Bottomless Trap Hole

1 Torrential Tribute

1 Mirror Force

1 Armory Arm

1 Ally of Justice Catastor

1 Goyo Guardian

1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

1 Iron Chain Dragon

2 Black Rose Dragon

1 Scrap Dragon

1 Stardust Dragon

1 Red Dragon Archfiend

1 Colossal Fighter

1 Drill Warrior

1 Turbo Warrior

1 Nitro Warrior

1 Junk Destroyer

OK, so now you've got the idea, you may be asking "why". Well, people like to play Goat Format for obvious reasons. It's skillful, nostalgic and enjoyable. I think this format is more of the first and third of those, while also being nostalgic for players that were around during that format (like me). There are less broken cards like Delinquent Duo and Pot of Greed and less annoying stuff like TER. The only thing that might be unfair is Cold Wave into Black Rose, but that's not massively common and Solemn Judgment is a thing. It's also more varied than Goat format. You have 10+ slots that are completely open to player preference which can make for some very interesting techs and a more varied format. You could vary your own deck to try new things and constantly keep it interesting. It's also cheap and all of the cards are easy enough to come by. I spent about £40 and did a bit of trading and now have two main decks and 1 Extra. That's about the same, if not less, than Goat format (also gl getting your hands on enough Metamorphosis).

Well, hopefully at least a couple of people will try this out. Trust me it is a hell of a lot of fun.

also two questions

will we be playing with draw 6 turn 1 and priority

and is quickdraw plants the only thing we can play? i understand the mirror was fun, but there were also decks such as Blackwing, Machina Gadget, Infernity, Black Salvo, Lightsworn, GB, Non Quickdraw Plants, Gemini Stun, X-Sabers, Diva Hero, Scraps, Dimensional Eatos, Recruiter Gravekeepers, Zombiesworn, Frog Monarch, Anti-Meta etc.

the only thing that should prob be excluded is sox sam near the end of the format

Ah, yeah, forgot to mention that. We will be playing with draw 6 turn 1 and priority, since they were the rules back then. Also the Field Spell rule, but that probably won't be too relevant.

While the Quickdraw mirror match was the best part of the format, a lot of the other decks were pretty awesome too. I'm also quite fond of Blackwings as well as "Quickdraw without Quickdraw". Some decks like Lightsworn and Infernity I'd rather not have, but I'm not sure how much I want to pick and choose what can be played and what can't.

Also, I've been thinking. Vanity's Emptiness is technically legal this format as it was released in Starstrike Blast, but I'm thinking about banning it because nobody played it back then since nobody realised how good it was. What are your thoughts?

Wasn't this the set 5 and pass format?

Not at all. Sure, Heavy Storm was banned, but Cold Wave and Trunade still existed and board nukes were still pretty easy. Unless you were a Blackwing player, you didn't even play a lot of backrow.
