I didn't know how to word that properly because of the discard effect being the last to resolve.

Basically what you want to do:

When this card is discarded by a card effect: excavate the top 3 cards of your deck; add 1 to you hand and (insert what you'd like to do with the excavated cards), then discard 1 card.

 

this will indicate that the adding of the excavated cards and whatever else is simultaneous, but is then followed by the discard.
