I fought him EVERY SINGLE TIME with the pokemon of the next evo (I started with... Bulbasaur, I think... and when I fought him after we got our pokés, when he had Charmander, I had Wartortle, he had Charmeleon, I had Blastoise. He had Charizard, I had Blastoise at TWICE his level.)
