Cyber Altair
there's something in the task manager called desktop managment or something and that's related to your issue i remember... it's most probably a RAM problem, tried restarting the computer? Glorious eXcess
While having your mouse on the icons in the start menu, drag and drop the selected programs/ icons onto your desktop. You should get your desktop that way.
Guest KAJN
Did you restart the computer then tried? Or did you refresh your desktop? I don't know about Vista but when it happens on my Mac I just restart my computer or refresh the desktop. No major issue happens. But if they didn't work just call an expert and let him tell you on the phone the steps.

Cyber Altair
If you can open your task manager i suggest you do the following. Open it, go to processes and then search from the list for something called dwm.exe or look at the description column where it says Desktop Window Manager. As far as i know that's the program in charge with your desktop and if your RAM is low or if it's not working properly then the fault is from there... i had such problems but it got fixed once i increased my RAM
